Audacity is the clearest starting point if you want free, open-source audio editing; Adobe Audition suits a conventional waveform and multitrack workflow with audio-cleanup tools; and Descript is worth considering if you prefer editing audio or video through a transcript. The right choice depends on your budget, how you like to edit, and whether your podcast is audio-only.
How to choose a podcast editor
Start with the work you need the software to do, not a universal ranking. These three editors use different approaches, and available product information does not establish a head-to-head performance winner.
- Budget: Audacity is free and open source. Descript offers a free tier with monthly media and AI-credit limits, as well as paid plans. Audition is paid; check Adobe’s current price and plan terms for your region before subscribing.
- Editing style: Audition offers waveform and multitrack editors. Descript lets you edit audio and video by working with a transcript. Audacity is a free audio editor for recording and editing, including podcasts.
- Recording and cleanup: If you record several voices inside your editor or need tools for unwanted-noise removal, Audition’s described multitrack recording, level adjustment, and cleanup tools may fit that workflow.
- Audio or video: For an audio-only show, compare audio editing workflows. If you also make video, consider whether transcript-based editing in Descript fits that combined workflow.
Podcast editing software compared
| Software | Best fit | Editing approach and capabilities | Cost information |

| Adobe Audition | Creators who want a conventional waveform and multitrack workstation | Waveform and Multitrack editors; Adobe describes recording several voices, adjusting levels, and tools for removing unwanted noise. | Paid. Which editor should you try first?
Choose Audacity to avoid a subscription
If you want to begin editing without paying for an editor subscription, Audacity is a grounded first option to evaluate. Its official FAQ describes it as free software for recording and editing audio, including podcasts. You still need to decide whether its audio-focused workflow suits your production needs.
Choose Descript for transcript-oriented editing
If working with a transcript feels more natural than arranging edits directly in a waveform, evaluate Descript. Its free tier has monthly media and AI-credit limits, so review those limits against your expected workload before moving to a paid plan.
