One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo go live on YouTube, first enable live streaming on a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Then choose a method: use Webcam for a straightforward computer broadcast, an encoder such as OBS for gameplay or screen sharing, or YouTube’s mobile or console options where eligible. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so set it up before your planned stream.
Before you can stream: check channel eligibility
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube’s current general help page sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16.
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours; same-day access is not guaranteed.
See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance for current eligibility and activation details.
Choose how to go live
| Method | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam | A simple computer broadcast using a webcam. | Start from YouTube Studio without separate live-encoding software. |
| Encoder software or hardware | Gameplay, screen sharing, external audio or video gear, and more involved productions. | Configure an encoder, such as OBS or Streamlabs, with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. |
| Mobile | Vlogging and quick updates. | Subject to YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements. |
| Console | Gameplay streamed from a supported console. | Supported consoles may stream directly; follow the console maker’s instructions. |
YouTube’s overview of live-streaming methods explains the options. Its verified encoder information names products including OBS and Streamlabs; these are examples, not YouTube endorsements or guarantees of compatibility. Check the software vendor’s current system requirements for your operating system.
Go live from a computer with a webcam
- Sign in to the eligible YouTube channel and open YouTube Studio.
- Select Create → Go Live.
- Choose Webcam, enter the stream details, and select the intended webcam and microphone.
- Review the preview and audio before starting the broadcast.
- When finished, end the stream in YouTube Studio.
A laptop webcam can be enough to get started. An external camera or microphone is optional if your built-in equipment does not meet your needs.

Go live with an encoder for gameplay or screen sharing
- Enable streaming early. Complete channel activation and allow up to 24 hours for first-time access.
- Install an encoder. Choose software compatible with your computer and production needs. YouTube’s encoder list is a starting point; check the vendor for current requirements.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and set up or choose the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Connect and check your sources. Confirm the encoder receives the intended game or screen, camera if used, and microphone or other audio source. Listen for unwanted audio and verify that game audio and voice are balanced.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the encoder signal to appear in Live Control Room. Check the image, sound, and stream-health messages, and confirm the event is accessible using the scheduled or immediate workflow you selected.
- End cleanly. End the stream in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
For event planning, YouTube advises configuring an encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled broadcast. Confirm the preview and check that the event appears on channel and watch pages before you begin. See YouTube’s encoder setup and streaming guidance.
Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and latency
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in your encoder. YouTube detects the selected settings and transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and connections. There is no single setting that suits every game, computer, or upload connection: choose a stable quality your available upload bandwidth can sustain, then test it with representative motion and audio.

- Measure upload speed. Download speed does not tell you how much capacity is available for sending a stream.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving about 20% headroom. Other people and devices on a shared connection can reduce what is available to the encoder.
- Test before the event. Use a private test workflow or an appropriate test stream, if available, with the same game, audio sources, and settings you plan to use. Review the preview and stream-health messages.
- Use secure ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for live ingest. Check the encoder’s streaming settings and YouTube’s current guidance.
Latency is the delay between capture and what viewers see. Lower latency can help when responding to chat, but YouTube notes it may increase playback buffering. For a one-way presentation, interaction may matter less than smooth playback. Pick the trade-off that fits the broadcast rather than choosing the lowest latency by default. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Prepare your equipment and network
Start with equipment you already have. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to begin; a laptop and webcam may be enough for a basic broadcast. For gameplay or an encoder setup, a microphone, webcam, and headphones are common optional additions. A more complex event may call for multiple cameras and microphones, a mixer, or a hardware encoder; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. These are production choices, not minimum requirements.

YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover network and equipment preparation.
Make a preflight checklist
- The channel is eligible and live streaming is activated.
- The right stream or event is open in YouTube Studio, with its title and visibility set as intended.
- The encoder is sending to the correct stream URL, and the stream key has not been exposed.
- The preview shows the right game or scene; voice and game audio are both audible and not distorted.
- The upload connection has enough capacity for the chosen bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Live Control Room shows no unresolved stream-health issue, and you have confirmed the event is accessible as intended.
- If you use a backup encoder, test the failover before relying on it. YouTube describes stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet connection and checking that playback rolls over to the backup.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable | The channel is not verified, has a recent live-streaming restriction, or first-time activation is still processing. | Check channel eligibility and complete activation early; allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
| The encoder does not connect | The stream URL or key is wrong, the wrong stream is selected, or the encoder’s ingest settings do not match. | Compare the encoder settings with the current URL and key in YouTube Studio. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Buffering, dropped frames, or poor stream health | Available upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, potentially because the network is shared. | Run an upload test, reduce encoder bitrate or quality, and retest while leaving about 20% headroom. |
| No microphone or game audio | The wrong audio source is selected, muted, disconnected, or not reaching the encoder. | Check the encoder’s audio meters and selected inputs; monitor a test before the event. |
| Viewers report delay or buffering | Latency settings and playback conditions can trade responsiveness for stability. | Choose latency based on interaction needs, then test playback. Lower latency may mean more buffering. |
| A backup encoder does not take over | Failover was not configured or verified before the broadcast. | Test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirm playback rolls over to the backup. |
Copyright, stream keys, and keeping a channel in good standing
Only stream video and audio you have the right to use. A stream key grants access to your live ingest, so keep it private and reset it if it is compromised. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility also depends on the channel having no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; check current YouTube rules before planning a broadcast.
