Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerforming and looping a cover yourself does not automatically clear the rights to the song. Your performance may avoid using someone else’s sound recording, but the underlying musical composition—its music and lyrics—has separate copyright. Before you stream, confirm that you have permission for the live performance and any replay, and ask the rights owner or licensor whether your YouTube channel must be added to a Content ID allowlist.
Why your own cover can still receive a claim
A cover involves at least two distinct works: the musical composition (music and lyrics) and a particular sound recording. If you sing and play the song yourself, you are making your own recording, but you are still using the underlying composition. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that copyright in a sound recording is not a substitute for copyright in the composition: Copyright Registration of Musical Compositions and Sound Recordings.
That distinction is why using your own instruments, recording a loop yourself, or avoiding the original artist’s track does not by itself make a cover claim-proof. Rights requirements can vary by song, territory, and license. There is no general permission established here that automatically clears every cover for YouTube Live.
What YouTube can do during the live stream and afterward
While you are live
YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies material, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. A cover is not the only possible match: commercial music or other third-party content audible in the background can also matter. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
After the stream ends
If your live stream is archived, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the stream ends. YouTube’s livestream terms also place responsibility on creators to have the necessary rights for their live content, including music licenses, and apply to archived content. The terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube livestream terms and conditions.
A Content ID claim is not the same thing as a copyright removal request or strike. A claim can affect a video’s monetization or availability, including where it can be viewed; a takedown request can have different consequences. YouTube explains the distinction in its copyright claim guidance.

How to check rights before looping a cover
- Make a song-by-song set list. Identify the composition and relevant songwriter or publisher rights for each cover. Permission for one song does not clear another.
- Confirm that permission covers your planned uses. Ask whether it covers the live audiovisual stream and, if you plan to keep the replay, the archived version too. Do not infer archive rights from permission to perform live.
- Check the Content ID setup with the rights owner or licensor. If you rely on a license for third-party material, ask whether your YouTube channel needs to be allowlisted. YouTube advises asking the content owner to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist; a stream can still be interrupted if it has not been added. Confirm the allowlisting before you go live using YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- Clear other audio as well. Avoid commercial recordings and other third-party material in the background unless those uses are covered too. A stream can be scanned for content beyond the cover you are performing.
- Decide whether you will archive the broadcast. If you keep a replay, plan for the possibility of a Content ID claim after the stream ends and check that your permission covers the archive.
- Keep your paperwork. Save licenses and written confirmation of any required allowlisting. They help establish what you were permitted to do, but do not guarantee that automated matching will never produce a mistaken claim.
If the rights or license scope for a particular song is unclear, ask the rights holder or a qualified music-rights professional. The U.S. Copyright Office source above describes the distinction between works; it is not a complete legal guide for every country or a clearance for any specific song.
What to do if a stream is interrupted or an archive is claimed
If YouTube interrupts the live broadcast
Check YouTube Studio for the identified content and address it. YouTube also recommends checking the Studio dashboard for strikes if a stream stops. If you believe your license should cover the use, contact the rights owner or licensor and verify that any required channel allowlisting is in place; do not assume that owning your recording alone resolves a match.

If the replay receives a Content ID claim
Open the claim details in YouTube Studio to see the claimant, matched material, and any regional restrictions. If the claim is valid, available responses can include leaving it in place or removing, replacing, or muting the claimed material where the editor permits. Dispute only when you have a legitimate basis, such as rights that cover the use or an applicable exception. A self-performed cover is not automatically exempt. For the distinction between claims and copyright removal requests, see YouTube’s claim guidance.
Can YouTube cover-video revenue sharing clear a livestream?
No. YouTube describes revenue sharing for eligible cover videos that publishers have claimed; an eligible creator may see a “Sharing ad earnings” notice. That program is conditional and does not replace permission needed for a live performance or its archive. Check the current eligibility details in YouTube’s guide to monetizing eligible cover videos.
