How to Sell Streaming Videos Online: Choose a Model, Platform, and Price

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To sell videos online, choose how viewers will pay—subscription, rental, one-time purchase, live pay-per-view, or advertising—then use a platform that hosts the video, handles access and checkout, and delivers playback. Match the payment model to the content: subscriptions suit an ongoing library, a rental or purchase suits a finished title, and pay-per-view suits a ticketed event. Before launch, check fees, taxes, download settings, content protection, and what happens to customer access if you leave the service.

Choose what you are selling

Start by defining the product, because a standalone film, a course, a continuing series, and a live event do not need the same checkout or access rules.

  • Single finished video: Decide whether viewers should rent it for a limited period or buy access. If you offer a purchase, state whether it means streaming only or includes a downloadable copy.
  • Course or ongoing series: Decide whether customers should pay for a defined collection or receive new material over time.
  • Live event: Decide whether viewers buy a ticket to watch live, whether they will also receive access to a replay, and for how long.
  • Video library: Consider whether the collection has enough continuing value to justify recurring access.

Pick the right way to charge

Model How viewers pay Best fit Access questions to settle
Subscription (SVOD) Recurring monthly or yearly fee A library, continuing series, or regular releases that deliver ongoing value What is included, when new videos arrive, and what happens to access when a subscription ends
Rental (TVOD) One payment for access during a limited viewing period A finished title viewers may want to watch once or over a short period How long the viewing window lasts and whether downloads are excluded
One-time purchase (TVOD) One payment for a defined title or collection A finished film, course, or other product with a clear scope Whether the purchase includes streaming only or a downloadable copy
Live pay-per-view (PPV) One payment for access to an event or eligible replay collection A ticketed live event or access to recordings of past live events Whether the ticket covers live viewing, replay access, or both
Advertising (AVOD) Viewers watch ads rather than pay directly for access Consider only if the platform, audience, and advertising setup support it Eligibility, ad-management requirements, placement, and who controls ad revenue

Vimeo OTT documents subscriptions, rentals, purchases, and live-event pay-per-view. Its advertising option is limited to Enterprise; its documentation says Google Ad Manager is required, and post-roll or mid-roll ads require Google Ad Manager 360. These are provider-described capabilities, not an independent comparison or a guarantee that a particular setup is suitable for your business. Vimeo OTT’s sales-model documentation explains its available access types.

Compare platforms before uploading

A hosted OTT service can combine video management, a storefront, payment flow, and delivery. Compare the details that affect your costs, customer experience, and ability to keep selling—not just the headline fee.

#1 Best Overall
Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Sales options: Confirm that the service supports the access model you chose, including the combination of subscriptions, rentals, purchases, live streams, or PPV you actually need.
  2. Storefront and delivery: Check whether the service provides the website or apps, video ingestion, transcoding, and adaptive delivery you need. Vimeo describes adaptive streaming, a content-management workflow for ingestion and transcoding, and branded viewing destinations in its Vimeo OTT overview.
  3. Payments and net proceeds: Check payment processor support, payout timing, transaction deductions, and the amount you will actually receive. Vimeo’s current seller guide, accessed October 3, 2026, illustrates this with about $7.80 net from a $10 Vimeo On Demand sale to a New York viewer: its example deducts a $0.48 transaction fee, $0.85 applicable tax, and $0.87 revenue share. That is one provider’s example for a particular sale, not a universal fee or earnings forecast. See Vimeo’s seller guide.
  4. Taxes and geography: Find out which customer taxes the platform calculates or remits, in which locations, and what remains your responsibility. Vimeo’s glossary describes location-based handling of certain indirect taxes; that does not settle your own local registration, reporting, or income-tax duties. Vimeo’s OTT glossary describes its terminology and service details.
  5. Downloads and offline viewing: Decide whether viewers may keep an offline copy or only stream. Confirm the access setting before launch: Vimeo On Demand’s FAQ says enabling downloads after a purchase does not retroactively grant download access to that buyer. Check Vimeo’s On Demand FAQ.
  6. Content protection: If you need DRM, verify eligible plans, supported devices, setup, and known playback limitations. DRM can control access but cannot guarantee that copying is impossible. Vimeo lists FairPlay, Widevine, and PlayReady technologies; Uscreen describes its DRM as beta and an add-on, and notes possible playback problems on some older devices, software versions, or restricted networks. Read Uscreen’s DRM documentation.
  7. Continuity and portability: Check how you can export content and customer information, migrate to another service, and preserve customer access if the platform changes or closes. Read the terms for purchases, downloads, and service termination before promising long-term access.

Two documented platform examples

Vimeo OTT documents subscriptions, rentals, purchases, live-event and replay PPV, and—in specified Enterprise configurations—advertising. Its overview describes adaptive streaming, payment processing via Stripe, content ingestion and transcoding, branded destinations, and DRM. These are Vimeo’s own feature statements; compare the current terms and configuration for your needs rather than treating them as an independent service test. Vimeo’s sales-model documentation and OTT overview provide details.

Uscreen lists subscriptions, group subscriptions, trials, individual video or course sales, PPV, time-limited rentals, donations, and payment integrations including Stripe and PayPal. Its product page also advertises local-currency pricing and tax collection at checkout. These are provider claims; check the current plan terms and geographic coverage. Its DRM help page describes DRM as beta and an add-on, with possible playback limitations on some devices or networks. See Uscreen’s product features and DRM documentation.

Set up the offer and test the purchase path

  1. Prepare the product: Organize the video, title, description, thumbnail, and any supporting materials. Make the offer clear about what is included and who it is for.
  2. Upload and configure access: In your chosen service, upload the video and select the access model. Set the subscription period, rental window, purchase download option, or PPV and replay terms as applicable.
  3. Set the price and review checkout: Check the displayed currency, payment methods, tax presentation, and any fees that affect your net proceeds. Do not assume that the amount a customer pays is the amount you receive.
  4. Test as a viewer: Use the public sales page or preview flow and check playback on the devices your audience is likely to use. Verify that the promised access works after checkout, including any download or replay option.
  5. Publish and promote: Share the sales page through channels where your intended audience already follows you. Describe the content, price, access period, and any download limits accurately; do not promise a sales result you cannot substantiate.
  6. Review actual sales: Reconcile transaction statements, payouts, deductions, refunds, and applicable tax obligations. Revisit pricing or access terms based on your own transaction data.

Check service continuity before you promise access

Platform availability can change, so consider how a shutdown or migration would affect customers before selling long-term access. Vimeo’s seller instructions state that Vimeo On Demand shuts down on November 20, 2026, and that new subscriptions and renewals were disabled after September 21, 2026. A buyer’s streaming access ends at shutdown; a purchase with downloads enabled can be downloaded to a device. Vimeo also says that enabling downloads after a purchase does not retroactively give that buyer download access. If you are considering Vimeo On Demand, account for these dates and access limits before making an offer. Vimeo’s seller instructions have the current details.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your video sale also includes a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate way to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed or provide a storefront for selling video access.
