To turn prerecorded menu and food-promo videos into a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, send them through a software or hardware encoder connected to a verified, eligible YouTube channel. Configure the encoder to repeat the video, choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then test the preview and stream health before making the event public.
What this setup does—and what it does not do
This workflow sends prerecorded video through an encoder as the content of a live broadcast. It is different from uploading a finished video to YouTube or arranging videos in a YouTube playlist. The encoder supplies a continuous live feed; YouTube receives that feed at the stream URL and key you set up in Studio.
A continuous broadcast makes sense when you want the menu or promotion to be presented as a live stream. It does not establish that a live format will improve audience reach or discovery. If viewers only need to browse a menu video on demand, an ordinary upload may be a simpler fit.
Check the channel and prepare the video
Confirm live-streaming eligibility
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If the channel has never streamed, enable live streaming in advance: first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio before planning a promotion around the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance explains the requirements.

Make the menu clip suitable for a loop
- Arrange menu items, prices, and promotions in an order that still makes sense when the video restarts.
- Check that any offers, hours, or prices shown are current for the entire period you plan to stream.
- Listen through the full clip for sudden volume changes, silence, or music you do not have permission to use.
- Use a clear transition at the end and beginning where possible; a hard cut or jump back to the opening is visible to viewers each time the loop repeats.
The encoder controls repeat playback, not YouTube. Exact loop controls depend on the software or hardware encoder and can change between versions, so verify the current documentation for the encoder you choose rather than assuming a particular menu label.
Choose a software or hardware encoder
YouTube supports streaming with software encoders on a computer and with standalone hardware encoders. A computer-based encoder is the general-purpose route if you already have a suitable computer and can leave it running. Hardware may suit a dedicated or scheduled playout setup, but it is not required; confirm that any device you consider supports your media format, streaming protocol, and repeat-playback need. YouTube mentions AJA PlayToStream as hardware with a capability for scheduling prerecorded media, but that alone does not establish that it is the right or lowest-cost option for a restaurant.

Configure the YouTube event and encoder
- Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and select the encoder workflow. Follow the current Studio prompts for the event’s title, visibility, and scheduling.
- Copy the connection details: Get the stream URL and stream key shown for the event and enter them in the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Set the prerecorded feed: In the encoder, select the menu or promo file as the outgoing video source and enable its repeat or loop function using that encoder’s current controls. The YouTube guidance establishes the encoder workflow but does not document version-specific media-loop steps for individual software products.
- Choose a protocol and output settings: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended general streaming protocol. Match the output to the encoder and your connection; the settings below give YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations.
- Start privately or unlisted for a test: Start the encoder, then check the event preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room before switching to the intended public event.
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Use the settings your encoder and chosen protocol support. Match the stream to the restaurant’s upload connection
Run a speed test on the same internet connection and, ideally, the same network path the encoder will use. The available upload bitrate must exceed the stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom, rather than using the entire measured upload capacity for the broadcast. For example, a 14 Mbps video stream needs more than 14 Mbps of available upload bandwidth, with additional capacity reserved for the recommended headroom and other network use.

- If upload capacity is inconsistent or shared with point-of-sale, guest, or staff traffic, choose a lower output such as 720p30 rather than trying to hold 1080p30 at 14 Mbps.
- If the stream health indicator degrades, first reduce the encoder’s bitrate or resolution and retest; a high-quality source file cannot compensate for an upload connection that cannot sustain the outgoing feed.
- Use a wired connection where practical and avoid large uploads or other bandwidth-heavy activity during the broadcast.
YouTube’s official encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS, while its streaming tips cover upload capacity and preparation.
Test before the promotion and monitor the live event
Preflight checklist
- Confirm the correct event, title, visibility, stream URL, and stream key are selected.
- Play the actual menu/promo video and verify that both picture and audio appear in the Live Control Room preview.
- Let the encoder run long enough to observe a loop transition; check for black frames, abrupt audio changes, or a pause when playback restarts.
- Check stream health and make sure the upload connection remains stable at the selected bitrate.
- Review the event from a viewer’s perspective, including on a second device if available, before advertising it.
Timing and live monitoring
YouTube recommends setting up an event at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. During the broadcast, keep an eye on the Live Control Room’s preview and health status, viewer messages, and audio/video output. If the channel is promoting a time-sensitive offer, assign someone to confirm that the on-screen information remains valid while the stream runs.

RTMPS by default; use HLS only when the workflow calls for it
RTMPS is the simpler default for general encoder streaming because YouTube recommends it. HLS is an alternative for supported workflows, and YouTube lists OBS among encoders with HLS output. HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments and imposes additional requirements: segment duration must be one to four seconds, the segment format must be TS, the playlist must roll with no more than five outstanding segments, delivery uses HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte ranges are not allowed. Do not add that complexity unless your encoder or stream requirements call for HLS. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Copyright, menu claims, and stream presentation
Only stream video, photos, logos, music, and other material you have the rights or permission to use. A restaurant menu clip can still contain copyrighted background music, stock footage, or branded artwork. YouTube may detect protected material in a live feed; check the platform’s current copyright rules and resolve any claims before relying on the broadcast for a promotion. Do not assume that repeating a recording makes it exempt from copyright requirements.
Make prices, availability, location, and offer terms readable and accurate. A live loop is still public-facing content: remove expired promotions and avoid wording that could mislead viewers about what is available.
End the broadcast deliberately
When the promotion is over, stop the encoder and confirm that the YouTube event has ended. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on an unattended encoder to stop at the right time unless its scheduled-stop behavior has been tested.
