You can keep YouTube Live connected while changing what OBS plays, but OBS does not document active VLC playlist edits as a reliable, uninterrupted replacement method. The cautious option is to prepare a second OBS scene with its own VLC playlist, update that playlist while it is inactive, then switch to the prepared scene without clicking Stop Streaming. This two-scene workaround comes from an OBS forum suggestion, not a guaranteed feature, so rehearse it and monitor YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
What you can change without stopping the stream
OBS’s streaming connection and its media source are separate. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it. That means you can leave OBS streaming while changing scenes, but neither YouTube nor OBS promises that every playlist edit will appear seamlessly to viewers.
For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video Source. OBS describes it as supporting playlists and requiring VLC to be installed. Its documentation does not establish that editing a playlist already in playback will reload predictably.
Set up a safer replacement workflow before going live
- Install VLC with the right architecture. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS’s guide says to install 64-bit VLC as well. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Create two equivalent scenes. Add a VLC Video Source to each scene and give each source a separate playlist file. Keep the alternate scene out of program output until you are ready to switch.
- Check playlist and visibility behavior. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. The VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour defaults to “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If you hide a source, it may stop and restart rather than continue playing in the background. Choose and test the behavior that fits your transition.
- Rehearse the edit and switch. While the alternate scene is inactive, add, remove, or replace a playlist item, then switch to that scene. Check picture, audio, playback position, and YouTube Live Control Room status. This is a community-suggested workaround, not an officially guaranteed reload process. [OBS Forums: Updating the VLC playlist which is livestreaming via OBS to YouTube]
- Plan for a transition gap. If you need a holding scene, test it too. A holding scene or visibility change can hide or stop the only media source you expect to remain active.
Replace the video during the broadcast
- Keep OBS’s stream output running; do not click Stop Streaming.
- Edit the playlist file assigned to the inactive scene, rather than relying on an edit to the playlist currently playing.
- Switch to the prepared scene when its playlist is ready. Watch the OBS program output for picture and sound.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream status and health. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains the encoder connection, but does not guarantee that a scene or playlist change will be invisible to viewers. [YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings]
What is known—and what remains uncertain
OBS documents VLC Video Source playlist controls, including looping, shuffle, and visibility behavior. It does not document active playlist editing as a reliable live replacement method. The alternate-scene approach was suggested in an OBS forum discussion, where the poster cautioned that it might still fail to reload. Another participant reported mixed results: resaving sometimes appeared to update the broadcast, while at other times restarting OBS and YouTube seemed necessary. These are individual reports, not a controlled test. [OBS Forums discussion]

A separate OBS forum question from 2020 describes playback apparently resetting to the first video after media was added or a VLC playlist was changed. It does not establish how YouTube’s encoder connection behaves generally. [OBS Forums: Adding media to running YouTube Live Stream]
Troubleshooting a playlist change
- The VLC source is missing or will not load: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- The source stops when you switch scenes: inspect the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
- The new item does not appear: do not assume the active playlist will reload when resaved. Update the inactive playlist and switch to its prepared scene; if the result is unreliable, return to your rehearsed fallback rather than repeatedly changing the live source.
- Playback starts from the beginning: forum users have reported resets after playlist changes, but this behavior is not established as universal. Test playback position during rehearsal.
- YouTube shows a stream problem: check Live Control Room and OBS output. The cited YouTube guidance explains the stream key’s role, but does not specify a guaranteed outcome for playlist edits.
