How to Configure OBS Replay Buffer Without Interrupting a YouTube Loop Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can save a recent clip with OBS Replay Buffer while your YouTube stream continues: enable the buffer in Settings → Output, assign it separate controls from stream start and stop, start it before you need a clip, and use Save Replay while live. This saves the clip locally; it does not stop the broadcast by design. It cannot guarantee zero dropped frames on every computer, so test the setup before using it on a public stream.

First, separate the three meanings of “loop stream”

A YouTube loop stream can mean a broadcast that repeatedly plays a video, or simply a stream that remains live while you capture clips. OBS Replay Buffer is a third, separate function: it keeps recent output available to save as a local replay. YouTube DVR is different again—it lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream, but does not save a clip to your computer.

  • Media Source → Loop: repeats a media file in your OBS scene after playback ends. It does not keep the YouTube broadcast live by itself.
  • Replay Buffer: captures recent OBS output and saves it locally when you choose Save Replay.
  • YouTube DVR: gives viewers pause-and-rewind controls for a live stream; it is not OBS Replay Buffer.

These functions can be used together, but none guarantees that a stream will run indefinitely. OBS describes Replay Buffer and its controls in its OBS Studio overview; YouTube explains live DVR in its live DVR help.

Configure Replay Buffer without tying it to stream controls

  1. Choose the buffer and its resource limits. Open Settings → Output, enable Replay Buffer, then set Maximum Replay Time and, where available, Maximum Memory. Choose a duration long enough to catch the moment you want, but do not assume any duration is safe on every computer. More retained footage means more buffered data.
  2. Set a destination for the clip. In OBS’s recording settings, choose a recording path and a filename convention that will make saved replays easy to find. The clip is written locally, not stored as a separate YouTube DVR clip.
  3. Assign distinct hotkeys. Open Settings → Hotkeys and assign separate, memorable keys for Start Replay Buffer, Stop Replay Buffer, and Save Replay. Keep these distinct from Start Streaming and Stop Streaming keys. If your installed OBS version offers an option to start the buffer automatically when streaming begins, verify that it exists and behaves as expected before relying on it; the OBS instant-replay guidance describing this workflow is older.
  4. Start the buffer before the moment you want to capture. Start Replay Buffer independently of the stream, or use a verified automatic-start option. The buffer cannot save footage from before it was running.
  5. Go live and save only the replay. Start the YouTube stream as usual and confirm the live preview or status. When the moment occurs, press your Save Replay hotkey or use the corresponding OBS control. Do not choose Stop Streaming unless you actually intend to end the broadcast.
  6. Verify both outputs. Find the replay in the chosen folder and check OBS’s performance indicators while the stream continues. Test privately or locally before relying on the workflow for a public broadcast. OBS’s setup guide recommends testing stream smoothness and scene configuration before going live: OBS Quick Start Guide.

Choose a replay duration and recording mode cautiously

There is no universally safe Replay Buffer duration or hardware configuration established for every OBS setup. The right choice depends on how far back you need to capture, available memory and encoder capacity, whether the recording uses stream settings or a separate recording configuration, and how you plan to edit the clip.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In Advanced output mode, OBS offers separate stream and recording options. Choosing non-identical recording settings can add resource demand, so a long buffer plus additional recording work may affect performance. Start with the shortest duration that covers your use, then test at your actual stream settings. OBS discusses output choices in its streaming and recording guide; exact labels may differ by installed version.

Troubleshoot a replay that is missing or interrupts the stream

  • Nothing was saved: confirm Replay Buffer was running before the target moment, that you used Save Replay rather than a stream control, and that the recording path points to a folder you can access. Check that a filename is being created there.
  • The stream stopped: review your hotkey assignments and ensure Save Replay is not bound to Stop Streaming. Use separate keys for buffer and stream controls.
  • The stream stutters or drops frames after enabling the buffer: added output work and resource limits can matter. Reduce the maximum replay time, avoid unnecessary separate recording work, and test again while monitoring OBS performance indicators.
  • The video file ends, but YouTube goes offline: a Media Source’s Loop property only repeats that file in the scene. Check that the broadcast itself remains active; source looping is not a promise of continuous YouTube output.
  • Viewers cannot rewind: Replay Buffer saves a local file and does not control YouTube DVR. Check YouTube’s live DVR behavior separately.
