Yes, YouTube’s published live-streaming eligibility rules do not list a public channel as a requirement. Channel visibility and the privacy setting for an individual live stream are separate. Eligibility still depends on your account, streaming method, age, verification and any recent live-streaming restrictions, so check YouTube Studio for your channel’s status.
Does a private channel qualify for YouTube Live?
YouTube’s general eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and says streamers must be at least 16. It does not list public channel visibility as a requirement. That supports the conclusion that a private channel can be eligible, but it is not a guarantee for every account or every unusual hidden-channel state. Your account’s feature status and any restriction notices in YouTube Studio are decisive. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance was checked on October 3, 2026.
Eligibility is also distinct from who can watch. YouTube lets creators choose public, private or unlisted visibility for an individual stream. A private channel does not automatically mean that every stream is private, and choosing a private stream does not itself establish that the channel meets eligibility requirements.
Choose a streaming method and check its requirements
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder and game-console streaming. The general verification and restriction rules apply, but some methods add requirements that do not apply to every route.

| Method | Requirements and details |
|---|---|
| Mobile | At least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming turned on, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a supported device: Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. The 50-subscriber threshold is specific to mobile streaming. YouTube mobile eligibility |
| Webcam | Use a computer, enable live streaming, then open Go Live and Webcam in Live Control Room and select a webcam and microphone. YouTube’s setup page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+; browser support can change, so consult the current webcam setup guidance if a browser is not working. |
| Encoder | YouTube lists encoders as a way to stream, including for gameplay, overlays and equipment such as preamps, microphones and cameras. The reviewed eligibility guidance does not give a separate subscriber minimum for this route. YouTube’s streaming-method overview |
| Game console | YouTube lists game consoles as a supported streaming method. Check the console’s current YouTube workflow and your account’s Studio status; the reviewed guidance does not establish an additional universal subscriber threshold for this route. YouTube’s streaming-method overview |
Mobile audience limits
For mobile channels with more than 50 and fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the live audience and set the archived stream to private by default. After reaching 1,000 subscribers, removing the audience limitation may still take several weeks. These are mobile-specific conditions, not a general rule for private channels. YouTube’s mobile streaming FAQ
What private, unlisted and public mean for a stream
| Visibility | Who can watch | Discovery and sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Private | The creator and people selected for sharing. | Not listed in the channel’s Videos tab or YouTube search; access is limited to selected viewers. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link. | Generally absent from search, but a viewer can reshare the link. |
| Public | Anyone. | Can be discovered broadly on YouTube. |
YouTube’s live-stream settings page says streamers can choose among these visibility settings. It describes the default as private for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or over; other route-specific pages describe defaults differently, including an unlisted default for mobile users aged 13–17. Defaults can therefore depend on context. Set and verify the stream’s visibility yourself rather than relying on a universal age-based default. Enable streaming and verify your account status
- Sign in to the channel you intend to use. Confirm the correct account is active before enabling or scheduling a stream.
- Verify the channel and turn on live streaming. Follow YouTube’s current Get started with live streaming steps. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours before concluding the feature is unavailable.
- Check the route-specific requirements. For mobile, confirm the 50-subscriber minimum and supported operating system. Do not apply that mobile threshold to webcam, encoder or console streaming.
- Open YouTube Studio and inspect channel status. Look for live-streaming restrictions or policy notices. A private channel setting does not override an account restriction.
- Set stream privacy separately. When creating or configuring the stream, choose private, unlisted or public according to the audience you intend. Confirm the setting before going live.
Why live streaming may be unavailable
- The channel is not verified or live streaming is not activated: complete YouTube’s enablement steps and, on first activation, wait up to 24 hours.
- You are trying to stream from a phone with fewer than 50 subscribers: mobile has that additional minimum; use an eligible route such as webcam or encoder if appropriate, or wait until the channel meets the mobile requirement.
- The account has a recent restriction: YouTube requires no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check Studio and the restriction notice for the applicable status and duration.
- A policy or copyright issue has disabled live access: YouTube may turn live streaming off temporarily or permanently for policy-related reasons. Its guidance says a strike results in a 14-day live-streaming restriction. Address the underlying notice through YouTube’s stated process.
- You are trying another channel to get around an active restriction: YouTube treats evading an active restriction through another channel as circumvention, which may lead to account termination. Do not use another channel to bypass it. YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance
