FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options can help when a live HTTP source drops or reaches EOF, but they cannot restart an FFmpeg process that has exited or guarantee recovery when YouTube’s ingest connection fails. First identify which layer stopped: the input, FFmpeg itself, or YouTube’s receipt of the stream. Then use the remedy that matches the failure.
Identify what stopped
Before changing flags, check whether the FFmpeg process is still running. If it exited, record its exit code and inspect the final log lines. If it remains alive, determine whether it is still receiving input and whether YouTube reports the stream as unhealthy. These are separate failure layers, and an input reconnect option addresses only some input-side failures.
- Input failure: the source disconnects, stops delivering data, or reaches EOF.
- Process exit: FFmpeg terminates, for example after an error or crash.
- Ingest problem: FFmpeg may still be running, but YouTube is not receiving healthy output.
Reconnect an HTTP live input
For HTTP inputs, FFmpeg documents reconnect controls for particular disconnect and network-error cases. Use them only when the actual input is HTTP and your installed FFmpeg build supports the options. Place the input options before the corresponding -i.
-reconnect 1retries a disconnection before EOF.-reconnect_streamed 1enables reconnects for streamed, non-seekable inputs.-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error and reconnects; FFmpeg describes this as useful for live or endless streams.-reconnect_on_network_error 1retries certain TCP/TLS errors during connection.-reconnect_delay_max 30bounds the maximum reconnect delay in seconds.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes these options and their scope. They do not resolve expired authentication, malformed input, an FFmpeg crash, or an output-side YouTube disconnection. Inspect the logs to establish the actual cause rather than treating the flags as a universal fix.
Restart FFmpeg if the process exits
Input reconnect flags cannot bring back an exited process. If the final log lines show that FFmpeg terminated, use a process supervisor or a carefully designed restart loop to launch it again. Keep persistent logs so each exit can be diagnosed, and add safeguards to avoid launching duplicate streams. The right supervisor and restart policy depend on the operating system and how FFmpeg is deployed; the available guidance does not establish one universal command.

Check YouTube ingest health separately
If FFmpeg is still running but YouTube reports a problem, inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and choosing a stream quality that the upload connection can reliably sustain. Its encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR; it recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum. Confirm that the selected encoder and settings match your workflow, and avoid choosing a bitrate solely to maximize quality.
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test. A speed test is a useful check, not proof that a connection will remain stable for an entire broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance and monitor stream health during the actual event.

Do not apply DASH retry guidance to FFmpeg RTMP output
Google’s documentation for delivering live YouTube content via DASH describes retry behavior for failed PUT requests, including randomized binary exponential backoff and signaling repeated failures to the operator. That guidance is specific to DASH delivery. It does not establish how FFmpeg’s RTMP output handles retries, so do not assume those DASH rules will keep an FFmpeg RTMP broadcast alive.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Likely layer to investigate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exited | Process | Capture the exit code and final log lines. Use a supervisor or guarded restart loop; input reconnect options do not restart a terminated process. |
| FFmpeg is running, but an HTTP source stopped or reached EOF | Input | Verify that the input is HTTP and live, check option support in the installed FFmpeg version, and consider the applicable HTTP reconnect options before -i. |
| FFmpeg is running, but YouTube reports unhealthy or missing output | YouTube ingest or output connection | Check YouTube stream health, test representative content, and choose settings the upload connection can sustain. Input reconnect flags do not establish output-side recovery. |
| The command uses an RTMP output, and a DASH guide is being used to set retry expectations | Protocol mismatch | Do not infer FFmpeg RTMP behavior from YouTube’s DASH-specific retry guidance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube radio stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping an FFmpeg setup running at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video looping without your computer or home connection staying on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only.
