Best OBS Settings for a 24/7 Sleep Ambience Stream on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a low-motion sleep ambience stream, start with OBS set to H.264, CBR, 1080p at 30 fps, a 10 Mbps video bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and RTMPS. YouTube publishes those video and keyframe recommendations for live encoding; they are a baseline, not a promise that your particular computer or internet connection can sustain an unattended broadcast. Test the complete scene and leave upload headroom before going live.

Recommended OBS settings for sleep ambience

Use the following as a practical starting point for an ordinary SDR scene. YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate values are recommendations; the resolution and frame rate you choose still need to suit your artwork, encoder, and measured connection.

OBS setting Starting value Why it matters
Video encoder H.264 Matches the H.264 live-encoding recommendations cited below.
Color range SDR This baseline is for ordinary SDR ambience, not HDR.
Resolution and frame rate 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps A reasonable default if the computer and upload connection sustain it.
Rate control CBR Constant bitrate is the recommended live-stream rate-control choice.
Video bitrate 10 Mbps at 1080p30 YouTube’s H.264 table lists 10 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for this format.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz A suitable platform-aligned default for stereo ambience.
Transport RTMPS YouTube recommends the secure transport protocol for sending the stream.

YouTube’s official encoder guidance says, “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Follow the two-second recommendation unless your encoder workflow requires a different setting that remains within YouTube’s stated limit.

Choose 1080p30 or step down to 720p30

If your complete OBS scene cannot reliably sustain the 1080p30 bitrate, reduce the output to 1280 × 720 at 30 fps and use 8 Mbps video bitrate. YouTube’s H.264 table lists 8 Mbps as its recommended value for 720p30.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate When it may fit
1080p30 10 Mbps When the artwork’s detail benefits from the higher resolution and both the encoder and connection remain stable.
720p30 8 Mbps When the lower output is a better fit for measured upload capacity or the computer’s actual encoding load.

For a still image or subtle animation, 1080p30 may not add visible value for every viewer, while 720p30 may provide a more comfortable capacity margin. That is a content-specific choice, not a universal rule: the available guidance does not establish that one resolution performs better for sleep streams or that it is easier for every computer to encode. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into playback formats, so viewers may not all receive the same output quality.

OBS labels can vary by version and platform, so use the settings by purpose if a label is slightly different in your installation.

  1. Build the scene. Add the ambience visual and audio source you intend to broadcast. Check that the image, animation, and sound loop as intended, with no unwanted gaps or clipping.
  2. Set the output format. In OBS, open Settings > Video, choose the output resolution and 30 fps. Start at 1920 × 1080; if the full setup is unstable, test 1280 × 720 instead.
  3. Set encoding. Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder for H.264, rate control CBR, the bitrate matching your chosen resolution, and a two-second keyframe interval. Select AAC audio and configure 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz stereo in the audio/output controls available in your OBS version.
  4. Connect the broadcast. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, then connect your account or enter the stream key and server details shown by YouTube Studio. Use RTMPS when the service configuration offers it. Treat the stream key as a password; do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
  5. Run a full test. Start a test broadcast and check the stream from both the channel and watch-page views. Listen for silence, distortion, unexpected source changes, and audio/video drift; watch OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before committing to a long event.

The YouTube bitrate table is a platform recommendation, not a requirement that every source use the highest listed resolution. Choose the output that your machine and connection can maintain continuously.

Check upload capacity and stability

YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and advises leaving 20% headroom. Its “Streaming tips” page puts it plainly: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” As a practical minimum, a 10 Mbps video setting needs more than 10 Mbps of dependable upload capacity because audio and network variation also count; do not plan to use the entire measured upload rate for the video encoder.

  • Run an upload-speed test under the conditions you expect during the broadcast, including times when other people or devices use the connection.
  • Account for the total stream bitrate, not just the video number, and preserve the recommended 20% margin.
  • If capacity fluctuates or the stream health degrades, lower the output bitrate or step down to 720p30 and test again.
  • A wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to reduce reliance on Wi-Fi conditions, but YouTube’s guidance calls for a reliable network and does not require Ethernet.
  • During operation, monitor the stream-health status. A network interruption can break a stream; a static or looping scene does not prevent that.

Plan for long-run reliability and archives

Before leaving OBS unattended, test the whole path: computer, power, audio source, scene loop, network, YouTube connection, and the ability to return to the stream health view. YouTube’s live-stream tips also recommend checking audio and video quality, testing encoder failover, confirming local archive files remain intact and grow as expected, and verifying that the event can be viewed on the channel and watch pages. These checks lower operational risk but do not guarantee continuous uptime.

Do not rely on a complete YouTube archive for a 24/7 event

A 24-hour broadcast exceeds YouTube’s documented 12-hour threshold. YouTube states, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The live broadcast can continue while a complete automatic archive or full rewind is unavailable, so do not promise viewers either.

Check rights before broadcasting ambience

Confirm you have permission to use the actual music, field recordings, images, and animation in your scene, including any rights needed for continuous live use. Platform encoder settings do not grant those rights or resolve copyright questions. YouTube’s copyright-safety checklist may help you review the basics: copyright safety checklist.
