To stream a prerecorded retail promo on YouTube Live, create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into a compatible encoder, and set up video playback and repeat behavior in that encoder—not in the stream key. Start the encoder, check the preview and stream health, then go live.
Check channel eligibility and choose when to stream
Before troubleshooting the encoder, confirm the channel is eligible to go live. YouTube’s eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet the general minimum age requirement of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
Choose an immediate stream if you are ready to broadcast now. Schedule the event if you want time to promote it, share its watch URL, or let viewers set reminders. YouTube documents both workflows in its encoder live-stream setup instructions.
Find and use your YouTube Live stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab to create or select a stream. To plan an event ahead, use Manage > Schedule stream, then create a new stream or reuse settings.
- In the stream settings, copy the Stream URL and Stream key. In your encoder, enter the URL as the server and the key in the stream-key field. A supported YouTube preset may handle these connection details for you.
- When your encoder supports it, use RTMPS: reveal and copy the RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room, then enter the stream key in the encoder. RTMPS encrypts the RTMP connection. YouTube explains this in its RTMPS streaming instructions.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat yours as a secret: do not include it in screenshots, public chats, or shared documentation. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Set up prerecorded playback and looping in the encoder
The stream key identifies and authenticates the encoder feed; it does not make a video repeat. Configure file playback and looping in the encoder or playout system, and check that product’s current instructions for file support, repeat behavior, and reconnect behavior. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to connect an encoder and send content, but does not provide a retail-promo loop recipe or certify a particular encoder for continuous playback.
YouTube documents software encoding as an option. It also recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but dedicated hardware is not a universal requirement. Whichever you choose, verify that it supports the playback and repeat workflow you need.

Choose a protocol and stream quality
RTMPS or HLS
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted RTMP ingestion workflow when your encoder supports it. HLS is another documented ingestion protocol, but it requires an HLS-capable encoder and protocol-specific configuration, including the HLS URL, segment format and duration, and playlist behavior. A prerecorded source alone is not a reason to choose HLS. See YouTube’s RTMPS and HLS ingestion guides.
Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and connection headroom
Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to match your encoder and the upload capacity available at the streaming location. YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec; consult its current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than relying on figures that may have changed. The same guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and constant bitrate.

Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the total stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving about 20% headroom. A connection that is fast enough on average can still fail if it is unreliable, so test from the actual location and network you will use for the promo. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Test the feed, go live, and end the event
- Prepare early. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start.
- Start the encoder. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check picture, audio, framing, and whether the promo repeats as intended.
- Check stream health. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, monitor audio/video quality and stream health, and confirm the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices.
- Go live. For a scheduled stream, select Go live only after the preview is ready and you have checked the feed.
- End the broadcast. End the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current YouTube guidance rather than assuming the same archive behavior for a longer event.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed: Check that the encoder is using the correct server URL and stream key, and that the selected protocol matches the encoder configuration. If you use RTMPS, confirm the RTMPS URL and key are entered in the appropriate fields.
- The preview appears, but the promo does not repeat: Looping is a playback setting in the encoder or playout system, not a YouTube stream-key option. Check that tool’s repeat controls and confirm looping in the preview before going live.
- The stream is unstable or its quality suffers: Check the connection’s available upload bandwidth against the total stream bitrate, leave headroom, and test the intended resolution and frame rate on the actual network. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. Only a channel owner or manager can reset it, according to YouTube.
- The scheduled event cannot go live: Recheck channel eligibility and restrictions, then confirm the encoder is sending a feed and the preview is ready before selecting Go live.
Confirm rights and advertising requirements
Technical connection instructions do not establish whether a promo’s music, footage, or advertising claims are cleared for use. Confirm rights for the actual content and check the retail and advertising rules that apply in your location. YouTube’s setup guidance does not settle those questions.
