For a demo built around one supported video or audio file, use OBS’s Media Source. For a sequence of clips that should play as a playlist, use VLC Video—but install VLC first, and match its architecture to OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC). Neither source is documented as faster or more reliable; choose by the playback controls your demo needs.
Which OBS source fits your demo?
| Decision | Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Playing an individual supported media file in a scene. | Playing multiple items as a playlist in a scene. |
| VLC installation | No VLC dependency is stated in OBS’s documentation. | VLC must be installed before the source appears in OBS. OBS Project specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. |
| Playlist controls | Playlist capability is not described for this source. | Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist controls are available. |
| When the source is not visible | Restart playback when the source becomes active and close the file when inactive are configurable. | You can configure whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while hidden, along with visibility behavior when it becomes active again. |
| Media support | OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM video formats, plus MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV audio formats. | OBS says VLC libraries provide extended media support; it does not promise that every VLC-compatible file will work in this source. |
OBS describes VLC Video as allowing a playlist “similar to an Image Slideshow.” That distinction is the practical one for a product demo: a single prepared clip is a Media Source use case; a rotating sequence is a VLC Video use case. OBS’s documentation lists features and settings, not a head-to-head performance benchmark, so it does not establish a speed, quality, CPU-use, latency, or reliability advantage for either source. How to set up a single-file demo with Media Source
- Add the source: In OBS, select the scene for the demo, then use the Sources dock’s + button and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- Select the file: In the source properties, enable the local-file option if needed and browse to the media file. Use a format listed in OBS’s Media Sources documentation, such as MP4 for video or MP3 for audio.
- Choose playback behavior: Set looping if the demo needs to repeat. OBS documents Restart playback when source becomes active as on by default, Close file when inactive as off, and Show nothing when playback ends as on. These are defaults, not universal recommendations: decide whether a clip should restart when you return to its scene, release its file while hidden, or leave an image visible at the end.
- Check framing and sound: Confirm the video fits the scene’s canvas and that its audio is audible at an appropriate level in the OBS audio mixer. If the source is hidden behind another source, adjust the Sources order or visibility.
For exact supported formats and the documented source controls, see the OBS Media Sources documentation.
How to set up a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC before opening the source menu: Download and install VLC, then ensure the architecture matches OBS. OBS’s requirement is explicit: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video does not appear in the source list, this dependency is the first thing to verify.
- Add VLC Video: Select the demo scene, click + in the Sources dock, and choose VLC Video. Add the media items you want in the playlist and arrange them in the intended playback order.
- Choose playlist behavior: Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if a changing order suits the demo. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as defaults.
- Set visibility behavior deliberately: VLC Video’s documented defaults stop playback when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. Change the visibility controls if you need it to continue or pause while another scene is active. For a scheduled demo, check what happens when you switch away and back; restarting a sequence may repeat its opening clip.
- Verify each item: Preview the scene and watch or listen through the playlist transitions. Confirm that the intended files play, their audio is present, and the sequence behaves as expected when you hide and show the source. VLC’s extended support does not guarantee that every file or codec will work in OBS.
OBS’s controls and defaults are documented in its Media Sources guide. Use those defaults as a starting point, not a substitute for checking the exact scene behavior your presentation needs.

Test the demo before going live on YouTube
Before a live product demonstration, run through the actual scene and playback path rather than assuming that a successful file preview is enough. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing stream settings before streaming. For a media-based demo, include these checks:
- Start the intended scene and confirm the video is visible, correctly framed, and not covered by another source.
- Listen to the clip and confirm the correct audio source reaches the OBS mixer. Check that desktop or microphone audio will not unexpectedly compete with the demo track.
- For a playlist, observe at least one item transition and verify the loop, shuffle, and scene-visibility behavior you selected.
- Confirm your YouTube stream is configured and run a brief test before the public demonstration. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers the broader setup and testing workflow.
Troubleshooting common playback problems
- VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC, then check the architecture. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS after installing if the source still does not appear.
- A file does not play: For Media Source, compare its format with the formats listed by OBS. For VLC Video, VLC’s extended support is not a universal compatibility guarantee; try a file in a format OBS explicitly lists for Media Source or convert the asset using a workflow you trust.
- The playlist repeats or changes order unexpectedly: Review Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. The documented defaults are loop enabled and shuffle disabled.
- The clip restarts or stops after a scene switch: Check the source’s visibility settings. Media Source defaults to restarting when active; VLC Video defaults to stopping when not visible and restarting when visible. Adjust the behavior to suit scene transitions.
- Video plays but the audience cannot hear it: Check the source’s audio activity in the mixer, confirm the relevant channel is not muted, and listen to a test recording or private stream before the product demo.
- The source is hidden or framed incorrectly: Check source visibility and ordering in the Sources dock, then resize or reposition the source in the preview.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that keeps playing without leaving the demo computer on, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube, not from a live camera.
