There is no universally best tool: destination support, plan caps, upload bandwidth, computer capacity, and production needs determine the right fit.
What multistreaming means—and what to check first
Multistreaming, or simulstreaming, sends the same live program to YouTube and at least one other destination at the same time. Before choosing a tool, check that each destination supports your intended workflow, that your accounts can go live, and that your internet connection and computer can sustain the output.
- YouTube eligibility: Your channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. YouTube says enabling a first live stream can take at least 24 hours. Confirm the other destination accounts are active and in good standing; some services require their own RTMP server URL and stream key. YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance
- Destination count and type: Check whether the tool supports each platform natively or through custom RTMP, and whether your chosen plan permits enough destinations.
- Production needs: Decide whether you need game capture, multiple scenes, overlays, guest interviews, or a browser-based studio.
- Where the work happens: A local encoder processes the stream on your computer; a cloud relay receives one feed and distributes it onward.
YouTube’s verified encoder directory includes OBS, Restream, StreamYard, Streamlabs, Wirecast, and hardware options. It is a directory, not an endorsement or a comparative ranking, and a listing alone does not establish that a tool supports every multistream feature you need. See YouTube’s encoder directory.
Compare the main multistreaming workflows
| Workflow | What it is suited to | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Local software encoder, such as OBS | Creators who want control over scenes and encoding and have a computer able to process the stream. | YouTube lists OBS as open-source recording and streaming software. The directory entry does not verify a particular multistream plugin, destination count, or native routing feature; check the exact setup you plan to use. Local processing adds computer load. YouTube encoder directory; simulstreaming guidance |
| Cloud relay, such as Restream | Creators who want to send one feed to a service that distributes it to multiple platforms, potentially reducing local computer load and setup. | YouTube describes Restream as a cloud studio that streams to multiple platforms. Confirm current destination support, plan limits, cost, and any studio or guest features directly with the provider; current Restream plan limits and pricing are not established here. YouTube encoder directory |
| Browser studio, such as StreamYard | Creators who prefer to produce and route a stream from a browser-based studio. | StreamYard’s help lists YouTube among native destinations and describes custom RTMP for platforms that accept an RTMP feed. Its multistream help lists paid-plan caps of 3 destinations for Core, 8 for Advanced, and 10 for Business. Plan names and caps can change, so verify them before subscribing. StreamYard multistreaming help; adding destinations |
| Other verified encoder choices | Creators whose production requirements or equipment fit Streamlabs, Wirecast, or a hardware encoder. | YouTube’s directory lists these options, but the listing does not establish identical features, multistream support, or that one is best for your setup. Check the product’s current documentation. YouTube encoder directory |
Choose by computer, connection, and production style
Choose a local encoder when control matters most
A local encoder can suit a gaming stream where you want to manage game capture, scenes, overlays, and audio directly. Its trade-off is local processing: your computer must handle the production and encoding workload. Confirm the method you intend to use actually routes to multiple destinations; YouTube’s OBS listing alone does not establish that capability.

Choose a cloud relay to reduce local routing work
A cloud relay takes a single incoming feed and distributes it to multiple platforms. YouTube describes this approach as potentially simpler and lower-load on the local computer, and says it may suit creators streaming to more than two channels. Check destination support and current plan limits before building your workflow around a service.
Choose a browser studio for an in-browser production workflow
A browser studio can combine production and destination selection in one workflow. For StreamYard, the documented multistream option is paid and has plan-specific destination caps; custom RTMP is an option for platforms that accept an RTMP feed. Confirm the platform and plan combination you need before purchase.

Plan upload bandwidth for every destination
For separate outputs, add the target bitrate for each destination. YouTube’s example combines a 6 Mbps stream and a 4 Mbps stream for a 10 Mbps total target, then recommends 15–20 Mbps of upload capacity to provide stability margin. These are YouTube Help operational recommendations, not independent performance measurements. YouTube notes that adequate upload speed is critical for high-quality simulstreaming. YouTube simulstreaming guidance
For a local encoder, plan capacity for the combined outgoing streams when your setup sends a separate output to each service. With a cloud relay, your computer sends one feed to the relay, which distributes it; the relay’s onward routing does not remove the need for a reliable connection from your computer to that service.

When destinations require different settings, use settings every destination can accept. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives these examples: at 1080p60, its recommended bitrate is 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 17 Mbps for H.264; at 720p60, it is 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 8 Mbps for H.264. These recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current table and each other platform’s requirements before configuring output. YouTube encoder settings
Configure and test before your stream
- Enable live streaming on YouTube. Verify the channel and enable live streaming early; YouTube says first-time enablement can take at least 24 hours. Check that any additional destination account is also eligible to stream.
- Choose the routing method. Decide whether the encoder will send separate outputs locally, or whether you will send one feed to a cloud relay. For a browser studio, add YouTube and the additional destination using its native option or custom RTMP if supported.
- Collect destination details securely. Where required, copy each service’s server URL and stream key into the appropriate tool. Treat stream keys like passwords: do not share them publicly, and replace one if it is exposed. Confirm the target destination before going live.
- Set compatible video and audio output. Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate accepted by every destination. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS, support for frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Requirements can differ by service, so check each destination’s current encoder guidance. YouTube encoder settings
- Run a representative private or unlisted test. Include the game’s typical movement and your usual audio, not just a static screen. Confirm picture, sound, sync, and that the stream reaches every intended destination. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video movement. YouTube encoder settings
- Monitor stream health while live. Watch the encoder and destination status for dropped frames, connection warnings, or audio problems. YouTube transcodes its live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, but that applies to YouTube’s delivery and does not guarantee processing on other platforms. YouTube encoder settings
An external microphone may improve the audio input for a gaming stream, but it does not route or enable multistreaming. YouTube includes external microphones among typical live-stream hardware. YouTube encoder directory and equipment guidance

Troubleshoot common multistream problems
- Only one destination receives the stream: Check that each destination was added and enabled, that the plan permits the destination count, and that the routing method supports the destination. With custom RTMP, recheck the server URL and stream key.
- Streams drop or look unstable: Compare actual upload capacity with the total target bitrate for separate outputs. Reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the required margin, and avoid saturating a shared connection during the event.
- The game runs poorly while streaming: A local encoder processes video on the computer. Reduce encoding or production load, or consider a cloud relay that receives one feed and distributes it.
- One platform rejects the video: Check that codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format fit that platform’s current requirements. When destinations differ, configure for settings compatible with all of them.
- There is no sound or the audio is out of sync: Check the encoder’s selected audio source, confirm the destination receives audio, and repeat a representative test before the event.
- The stream key may be exposed: Replace it through the destination’s account or live setup and update the encoder or relay with the new key.
