1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo stream video through Amazon CloudFront, store the video or packaged stream at an origin such as Amazon S3, create a CloudFront distribution that points to it, and play the resulting CloudFront URL in a compatible player. CloudFront distributes video; it does not encode a source file into streaming renditions. For adaptive streaming, encode the video into a manifest and media segments first. This guide focuses on video on demand (VOD) from S3, then covers the separate architecture for live video.
Choose VOD or live streaming first
The setup depends on whether viewers will watch stored videos or a live broadcast. Amazon Web Services (AWS) describes VOD as content stored on a server for viewers to watch at any time. Live video needs an encoder and a live origin or packaging service before CloudFront can deliver it.
| Workflow | What happens before CloudFront | Typical origin or packaging path |
|---|---|---|
| VOD | Upload a source asset; for adaptive streaming, encode it into manifests and segments. | Amazon S3 is the straightforward origin in AWS’s VOD tutorial. |
| Live | Encode the live input and, where needed, package it into delivery formats. | AWS describes MediaLive with MediaStore or MediaPackage as example services before CloudFront. |
AWS states that “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” That is essential for streaming formats such as HLS, MPEG-DASH, CMAF, and Smooth Streaming. The right format depends on your workflow and target players; the available AWS guidance does not establish one format as best for every audience. AWS CloudFront Developer Guide: video on demand and live streaming video.
Set up VOD delivery from S3
1. Pick the playback format and output layout
Identify the devices and players you need to support, then choose a packaging format and decide how the resulting objects will be organized in S3. A single MP4 can be served through CloudFront as a file, as AWS’s S3 tutorial demonstrates. That is different from adaptive bitrate streaming: adaptive playback uses a manifest and multiple encoded versions so a supported player can adjust quality to available bandwidth. A single MP4 does not provide those multiple renditions.

2. Create an S3 bucket and upload the source
Create a bucket in an AWS Region that fits your proximity, cost, and regulatory requirements, then upload the source video. The source file is the input, not necessarily the file your adaptive-streaming player will request.
3. Encode and package if you need adaptive streaming
Use an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaConvert to produce the output files. For adaptive bitrate delivery, create the required resolution and bitrate versions along with a manifest that points to them; store the output objects in S3. Confirm the output structure and player requirements before configuring cache paths, because CloudFront must be able to retrieve the manifest and every referenced segment.
4. Create a CloudFront distribution with S3 as its origin
- In the CloudFront console, create a distribution and choose the S3 bucket containing the video or packaged output as the origin.
- Restrict direct access to the S3 bucket so viewers retrieve content through CloudFront rather than bypassing the distribution. AWS’s tutorial demonstrates an origin access identity (OAI), but do not treat OAI as universally appropriate: for an S3 origin encrypted with SSE-KMS, use origin access control (OAC), because OAI does not support SSE-KMS.
- Apply the corresponding S3 bucket permissions so CloudFront can read the objects while direct public access remains restricted. Check the current AWS instructions for the selected access mechanism and encryption setup.
Origin protection and viewer authorization are separate controls. Restricting the S3 origin prevents bypassing CloudFront; it does not, by itself, make a CloudFront URL private.

5. Configure behavior and HTTPS
Use a cache behavior whose path pattern matches the objects you intend to deliver, and configure viewer delivery to use HTTPS. A simple file delivery path may need only a behavior that matches the file location. Packaged video requests a manifest first and then the referenced media segments; ensure the behaviors and paths cover both. Some packaging workflows require distinct behavior for manifests and segments. Do not copy MediaPackage-specific path patterns into a basic S3 setup without checking your actual object paths.

6. Test the CloudFront playback URL
When the distribution is deployed, use a URL shaped like https://<distribution-domain>/<path-to-video> for a file, or the corresponding manifest path for packaged streaming. Test from the player and client you expect viewers to use: confirm that the URL responds, that a packaged player can fetch the manifest and its referenced segments, and that playback works. A successful file response alone does not establish that an adaptive stream’s manifest and segments are configured correctly.
7. Add a custom domain only if you need one
A custom domain is an optional later step. AWS’s tutorial uses Route 53 for DNS and custom-domain setup. Domain registration, hosted zones, and DNS queries can incur fees; the total depends on the configuration and usage, so there is no universal setup cost to quote.

Use a separate architecture for live video
For a live broadcast, CloudFront is still the delivery layer, but the input must first be encoded and, as needed, packaged. AWS gives MediaLive as an encoder example, with MediaStore as an origin or MediaPackage to convert the output into delivery formats. Configure CloudFront against the chosen origin and use the paths and request features that origin expects.
MediaPackage endpoints need cache behaviors that match their manifest and segment extensions. AWS’s MediaPackage examples commonly use separate behaviors for manifests and segments, redirect viewer HTTP requests to HTTPS, and forward only the query strings required by endpoint features. For low-latency HLS (LL-HLS) manifest requests, AWS names _HLS_msn and _HLS_part. AWS also recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage endpoints and CloudFront. These details apply to the described MediaPackage workflow; they are not universal settings for every origin.

Make private video private at both layers
Protect the origin
For S3, use the applicable CloudFront origin access mechanism to restrict bucket access to the distribution. OAC is required for the SSE-KMS case described above. This controls access from CloudFront to the origin; it does not decide which viewers may watch.
Authorize viewers with signed URLs or cookies
For private delivery, configure signed URLs or signed cookies on the CloudFront behavior that serves the protected content. A trusted key group allows CloudFront to verify signed URLs. Your application must decide whether a viewer is entitled to the content and issue a signed URL or cookie only when appropriate.
A canned signed-URL policy is simpler and supports an expiration time. A custom policy can also include a not-before time or an IP range. If a request uses query parameters, include them in the signed URL; AWS warns that otherwise the resulting request can return HTTP 403. See AWS’s guidance on signed URLs and trusted signers and key groups.

Plan the rollout before enabling trusted signers on a behavior: once enabled, viewers whose requests match that path must use signed URLs. Turning it on before your application can generate them can block playback for everyone on that path.
Understand what affects cost
A defensible CloudFront video cost estimate needs assumptions about region, stored and transcoded volume, requests, and viewer data transfer. The AWS setup guidance does not provide a single total that applies to every deployment. Include any encoding services you choose, S3 storage and requests, CloudFront usage, and optional Route 53 domain, hosted-zone, and DNS-query fees in your estimate.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- The video URL returns an access error: Check the S3 bucket permissions and CloudFront origin access configuration. For SSE-KMS encrypted S3 origins, verify that OAC is configured; OAI does not support that encryption case.
- A file loads, but adaptive playback fails: Test the manifest URL in the intended player and check whether every referenced segment and rendition exists at the expected S3 path. A source MP4 alone is not an adaptive package.
- The manifest loads but playback stalls or errors: Inspect the segment requests as well as the manifest. Confirm that cache behaviors match the real object paths and that any required query strings are forwarded for the packaging workflow.
- Private content returns HTTP 403: Confirm the viewer is using a valid, unexpired signed URL or cookie. If query parameters are part of the request, ensure they are included in the signature. Also verify that trusted signers were not enabled before the application was ready to issue signed requests.
- MediaPackage delivery does not behave as expected: Recheck the manifest and segment path patterns, the endpoint features’ required query strings, and the configured CDN authorization. Use MediaPackage-specific guidance rather than applying these settings to a different origin.
