Yes. An Azure virtual machine can run an encoder that sends a live stream to YouTube, but the free-account credit does not guarantee that a particular VM can handle your stream or that the full setup will cost nothing. Microsoft’s standard offer provides a $200 credit for up to 30 days; eligible VM-hour allowances and internet egress limits are separate, restricted benefits. The offer and pricing terms below were checked on October 3, 2026, and may change.
What Azure’s free account covers—and what it does not
Microsoft’s standard Azure free-account offer includes a $200 credit for up to 30 days. The credit can be used on most Azure services, subject to offer terms and exclusions. It is a temporary balance, not a promise that a streaming setup will fit within the offer or run free indefinitely. Microsoft’s Azure free account page describes the offer and account behavior.
Azure also lists 750 hours each of specified burstable VM sizes for 12 months. This benefit applies only to the listed sizes and qualifying configurations; it does not make every VM free. Confirm the eligible size, operating-system image, region, and any related resources against Azure’s free-services listing before deploying.
Microsoft says that when the $200 credit is exhausted or 30 days have elapsed—whichever comes first—you must move to pay-as-you-go to continue using the account and selected free services. If you do not upgrade, the account and services are disabled. Remaining credit is visible in Cost Management, and unused credit does not carry into later months. If you upgrade, usage above free monthly amounts is billed at pay-as-you-go rates. Review the current Azure offer terms for exclusions and conditions; Marketplace products and separately licensed items, for example, may not be covered by the credit.

Can a VM actually send a live stream to YouTube?
Yes, in principle. YouTube supports live streaming with an encoder, so a VM can act as the computer running compatible encoding software and sending the stream to YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder-based live-streaming guidance.
That workflow does not certify any Azure VM as suitable. The official pages cited here do not establish a minimum CPU, memory, GPU, network capacity, or a tested Azure VM configuration for a given broadcast. The VM’s operating system and resources must support your chosen encoder and settings, and its network connection must sustain the stream. A free-credit balance is not a performance test or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

Estimate the bandwidth charge before streaming
Live video sends data from Azure to the internet. Azure’s bandwidth pricing page lists the first 100 GB per month of internet egress as free; charges after that vary by source region or zone. Check Azure bandwidth pricing for the current rate applicable to your VM’s region and subscription.
For a rough traffic estimate, convert the stream’s average bitrate to megabits per second (Mbps), then use:

Approximate outbound GB = bitrate in Mbps × streaming hours × 0.45
This is a planning estimate using decimal gigabytes; actual usage can differ. For example, a continuous 4 Mbps stream for 24 hours is roughly 43 GB of outbound data. A month at that rate would be about 1.3 TB, so the 100 GB monthly allowance would not cover all of it. Your actual bill depends on the stream, region, subscription offer, and other billable resources.

How to decide whether an Azure VM is a fit
Before you start a long broadcast, check each of these separately. Azure’s published free allowances do not establish encoder performance, and the official sources cited here do not provide a VM-size benchmark for YouTube streaming.
- Free-offer eligibility: Is the selected VM size among those listed for the 750-hour benefit, and do its image and region qualify?
- Encoder compatibility and capacity: Can the VM’s operating system run your encoder, and can its CPU or GPU handle your chosen resolution and frame rate? Verify with a short test rather than assuming a listed free size is sufficient.
- Network and egress: Can the VM sustain the encoder’s output, and how much outbound traffic will your schedule and bitrate generate?
- All-in Azure costs: Include billable VM hours, disks, IP addresses, and other attached resources, not just the VM’s listed allowance. Check current rates for the chosen region and subscription.
- Time limits: Compare the planned runtime with the 30-day credit window, eligible free hours, and monthly egress allowance. They are distinct limits.
What happens when the credit runs out?
If you reach the credit limit or the 30-day deadline, you need to upgrade to pay-as-you-go to continue using Azure services covered by that requirement. Without an upgrade, Microsoft says the account and services are disabled. Check the remaining balance in Cost Management and set budget alerts or other cost controls before launching a long stream; an alert helps you monitor usage but does not itself make the service free or guarantee a stream will continue.

Microsoft also says free-account compute resources may be removed after more than 90 days of inactivity, with a month’s notice described on the offer page. This is a separate long-term availability condition, not an extension of the 30-day credit period.
Stream YouTube from Azure, or keep the stream in the cloud
Azure VM approach
- Confirm the offer and configuration. Check the current free-account terms and eligible VM sizes. Choose a region, operating-system image, and VM configuration that can run your selected encoder.
- Create the VM and account for attached resources. Review the expected costs for the VM, disk, IP address, and any other resources before deployment. Do not assume the $200 balance covers all of them or that an eligible VM size can encode your stream.
- Prepare the encoder. Install an encoder compatible with the VM’s operating system and configure it for the video you intend to send. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance covers settings, bitrates, and resolutions; consult its current recommendations for your stream rather than relying on a fixed value here.
- Set up the YouTube broadcast. Follow YouTube’s live-stream setup to create or schedule the stream and obtain its stream key. Treat the key like a password: keep it private and enter it only in the encoder’s stream configuration.
- Test before going long. Start with a short broadcast, confirm YouTube receives a stable signal, and check the VM’s resource use and Azure egress. A successful test does not establish that the credit will cover a longer schedule.
- Monitor the spend and stop or upgrade deliberately. Track credit and outbound data in Azure. If you need service past the offer deadline or credit limit, upgrade to pay-as-you-go and review the rates before continuing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
