You can use a Raspberry Pi as a small, always-on encoder for a YouTube rain-ambience livestream: prepare a rights-cleared video with continuous rain audio, send it to YouTube Live through an encoder, and keep the Pi powered and connected. Start with a modest 720p at 30 frames per second (fps) profile, test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, and monitor it; the available official guidance does not establish a tested Raspberry Pi command set or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi and microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS. Raspberry Pi 5 has Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, and a microSD slot; those specifications do not by themselves prove it can encode every chosen profile reliably for continuous use.
- A suitable USB-C power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/5A supply for Pi 5, and says active cooling can help it perform under load.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the full outgoing stream bitrate plus headroom.
- A continuous rain-sound source and accompanying video that you own or have permission to livestream and archive.
- An encoder that can send a live feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- A YouTube channel eligible for livestreaming. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days for encoder streaming.
Raspberry Pi OS is Raspberry Pi’s officially supported operating system, and Raspberry Pi Imager can write it to a microSD card. The downloads page, accessed October 3, 2026, listed Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit dated September 15, 2026, based on Debian 13 (Trixie) with Linux kernel 6.18. Check the current download page before installing because releases change. Raspberry Pi OS downloads and Imager

Use content you are allowed to transmit
You are responsible for the rights to the audio and visuals in both the live stream and its archive. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators warrant that they have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights. Use your own field recording, commissioned material, or content whose license explicitly covers livestreaming and archiving. Keep license records and check restrictions on attribution, commercial use, and edits before using third-party material. YouTube livestream terms and conditions
Make playback continuous
Prepare the rain audio and visuals as a continuous source for your encoder. A simple, mostly static scene is a reasonable place to start because it avoids unnecessary visual complexity, but test the actual audio and moving video you plan to use. A loop with an audible click, a sudden jump in rain level, or a visible seam can make an otherwise stable stream unpleasant. The sources do not establish a Pi-specific looping command or tested media-player configuration, so verify the exact playback software and its behavior on your own setup rather than assuming a command will run indefinitely.

Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Confirm channel eligibility. Open YouTube’s live-streaming setup and make sure the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If livestreaming is not available, resolve that with YouTube before configuring the Pi.
- Create or configure a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send an ingest signal to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in a public script, or share screenshots that reveal it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in your chosen encoder, select RTMPS if the encoder and ingest endpoint support it, then set a compatible video and audio format. YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. The exact codec availability depends on the encoder and hardware you choose.
- Start a test before relying on the setup. Send representative rain audio and video, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and confirm that a viewer can access the stream as intended. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring quality; a successful short test does not establish 24/7 reliability.

Start with a conservative stream profile
For a first test, use 720p at 30 fps. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations list a 2 Mbps video bitrate target for 720p30. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular Pi, encoder, network, or scene will work well at that setting. Check the resulting stream health and adjust only after the whole setup is stable.

| Setting | Starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280 × 720 at 30 fps | Confirm the encoder is actually sending this profile and that Live Control Room reports a healthy stream. |
| Video bitrate | 2 Mbps target, per YouTube’s 720p30 guidance accessed October 3, 2026 | Include audio and protocol overhead when estimating total upload use; bitrate can vary with encoder settings. |
| Encoding mode | Constant bitrate | Use a codec supported by the chosen encoder and YouTube ingest. YouTube’s general guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. |
| Transport | RTMPS where supported | Use the matching server URL and stream key supplied for the YouTube stream. |
YouTube’s cited general settings do not specify a Raspberry Pi-specific keyframe interval or a tested encoder preset for this workflow. Do not treat settings from a different encoder or hardware platform as a verified Pi recipe; consult the selected encoder’s documentation and validate the resulting stream in Live Control Room. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Plan upload bandwidth, power, and cooling
Upload speed is the relevant network limit for sending the stream; download speed does not tell you whether the connection can sustain an outgoing broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. For example, a video target of 2 Mbps is not the whole connection requirement: account for audio and other outgoing traffic, then retain the recommended headroom. Test at the place and time the Pi will run, rather than relying solely on a broadband plan’s advertised rate.

Pi 5 offers Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi, but the cited specifications do not establish real-world performance at your location. If you can, test the actual connection you intend to use and watch for dropped frames or warnings in stream health. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/5A supply for Pi 5 and notes that active cooling helps performance under load. Use a suitable supply and allow for cooling in the enclosure, then check the board and stream during a sustained test. Neither the hardware specifications nor a short test proves uninterrupted operation.

Test the full setup before leaving it live
- Run the stream long enough to include the conditions you expect during ordinary operation, using the final media source, encoder profile, network, power supply, and cooling arrangement.
- Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream health for connection or encoding problems. Listen for audio dropouts and inspect for frozen video, visible loop seams, and unwanted changes in sound level.
- Confirm the stream’s visibility and playback from a viewer’s perspective, including whether the archive behaves as you expect.
- Arrange a way to check the stream periodically. A Raspberry Pi can be left on, but YouTube and Raspberry Pi documentation do not promise automatic recovery or uninterrupted 24/7 operation for this DIY setup.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the stream | Confirm the channel is eligible, the stream is configured in Live Control Room, and the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key. If the key was exposed or changed, update the encoder. |
| Stream health reports connection trouble or video drops | Check upload capacity against the complete outgoing bitrate and YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation. Test the actual connection, reduce the profile if needed, and inspect the network path. |
| Audio cuts out or the loop has a noticeable break | Check that the source itself is continuous and that the encoder is sending a supported audio format. Test the precise media file and playback method used for the live stream. |
| The Pi or encoder stops sending | Check power supply suitability, cooling, the encoder and playback processes, and network connectivity. The available hardware specifications do not establish a particular automatic restart setup; configure and test recovery behavior for the software you selected. |
| A stream or archive receives a copyright claim or restriction | Review the rights for every audio and visual element, including music, samples, and third-party footage. Permission to download or use a file privately does not necessarily include livestream and archive rights. |
