First check whether FFmpeg is still producing video after the first file ends. A black screen on YouTube does not, by itself, prove that FFmpeg stopped, the loop failed, or YouTube ingest is at fault. Check the input and stream mapping, inspect FFmpeg’s output across the transition, then compare it with YouTube’s stream status and health messages before changing protocols or hardware.
Locate where the video stops
Use the transition between the first and second video as the diagnostic point. Save the exact FFmpeg command, the FFmpeg version and build output, the playlist or input list, and a log covering that transition. Redact your YouTube stream key before sharing any command or log.
Classify what happens:
- FFmpeg exits: inspect the input sequence and any reported error at the end of the first file.
- FFmpeg stays open, but no longer emits video: check the next input, its video stream, and output mapping.
- FFmpeg continues emitting video, but YouTube shows black: compare a local output or recording with YouTube’s stream status and health messages.
- Audio continues while video is black: video selection, a missing video stream in the next source, or a transition problem becomes a more useful line of investigation than total ingest failure.
These are diagnostic branches, not confirmed causes. The precise fix depends on the command, source files, FFmpeg build, and what the logs show.
Check whether the input is supposed to repeat
In FFmpeg, -stream_loop is an input option. Its value 0 means no looping; -1 requests infinite looping. Confirm that the option applies to the intended input, rather than assuming that its presence anywhere in a command repeats the file you meant to repeat. See the FFmpeg documentation.

For a single source that should repeat indefinitely, the documented setting is -stream_loop -1. That is not a universal recipe for a multi-file playlist: the correct input arrangement depends on how the files are supplied and whether the intended behavior is to repeat one file or move through a sequence.
Also distinguish looping from pacing. FFmpeg documents -re as reading at the input’s native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. It does not make a finished input start over. For prerecorded material sent as a live feed, check separately whether the input repeats and whether it is read at an appropriate real-time pace.

Inspect the playlist and video stream mapping
If FFmpeg reaches the transition but the output loses video, inspect each source and how the command selects streams. Do not assume that a stream-copy or concatenation method will work across files with different stream layouts.
- Check that the next filename exists and that its path, quoting, and playlist entry are correct.
- Confirm that every intended source actually contains video; a file with audio only cannot supply the expected picture.
- Look at FFmpeg’s input and output stream information and the log just after the transition. Verify that the intended video stream is still selected and mapped to the output.
- Check whether the output continues to carry audio, video, both, or neither. That distinction helps separate a video-stream problem from input exhaustion or a broader output failure.
Use the actual command and inputs to decide whether to change the playlist, mapping, or loop option; the symptom alone is not enough to prescribe a safe replacement command.

Compare FFmpeg output with YouTube’s ingest status
If FFmpeg appears to keep producing video, check that its configured YouTube ingest address and stream name are the intended ones, then review the status and health messages in YouTube’s live control room. The LiveStreams API documentation describes stream states including active, error, and inactive. Use those signals alongside FFmpeg logs and local output; a viewer-facing black screen alone does not establish an ingest failure.
YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Its guidance says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Apply protocol checks only to the protocol you use
YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. If your workflow uses RTMP or RTMPS, verify its configured ingest address and stream name and use YouTube’s reported health information to investigate an ingest issue.
HLS has separate requirements. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide specifies a media playlist, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and a single encoded stream. Apply those checks only if your ingest workflow is HLS; they are not general requirements for an RTMP workflow.

If the black screen persists
To narrow down the unresolved cause, gather the exact FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, FFmpeg version and build output, source playlist, and log around the first-file transition. Note whether FFmpeg exits, whether audio continues, whether a local output contains video after the transition, which ingest protocol you use, and what YouTube reports for stream status and health. FFmpeg’s master documentation may differ from the version installed on your system, so check the options supported by that build.
