Start with a small range of original designs; then sell through an eligible YouTube Shopping connection, a marketplace such as Etsy, or your own storefront. There is no universal creator-merch earnings figure: sales are not the same as profit.
Start with something your audience would actually buy
Choose an original design, phrase, or visual idea that fits your creator identity and makes sense on a physical product. For a gaming creator, that might be an original channel emblem, a community in-joke, or artwork inspired by your own content—not an unlicensed game logo, character, or other third-party artwork.
Ask your audience which concepts or product types they would use, or begin with a limited selection. This can help you avoid committing to a large catalog before you know what resonates. Do not use someone else’s intellectual property unless you have the rights needed to sell it.
Choose how the merch will be made and fulfilled
Print-on-demand
A print-on-demand (POD) provider makes and ships an item after a customer orders it. That can reduce the need to buy and store bulk inventory, but the convenience is not free: production, shipping, marketplace charges, and other costs affect what remains. Printful’s Etsy integration explains its fulfillment and shipping workflow and cautions that profitability depends on the full cost stack: Printful’s Etsy integration.

Use an Etsy production partner
Etsy allows seller-designed goods to be made with production assistance. Its policy defines production partners as outside parties that physically produce items from the seller’s original designs, and applicable listings must disclose that assistance. Check Etsy’s current Seller Policy and follow the disclosure steps that apply to your listings.
Make and ship items yourself
In-house production gives you direct control over making, packing, and shipping orders, but requires time and possibly equipment, materials, and space. A heat press or other specialized equipment is optional—not a general requirement for selling merch. Compare the cost and workload of doing it yourself with a provider’s per-order charges before buying gear.

YouTube Shopping with a connected store
Eligible creators can connect a store and feature their own products on supported YouTube surfaces, including a channel store and tagged videos, Shorts, and live streams. Eligibility, retailer integrations, and feature availability can vary, so confirm the current requirements and setup in YouTube Help’s guide to promoting your products.

YouTube distinguishes sales of your own merch from commissions on other retailers’ products tagged in content. Those are different arrangements; do not assume that tagging another company’s product is the same as selling your own merchandise. See YouTube Help on shopping features and commissions.

Etsy is a marketplace for goods that meet its seller policies. If a production partner makes an item based on your design, disclose the partner where Etsy requires it and describe the item accurately. Review the live Seller Policy before listing because rules can change.
Your own storefront
A standalone store gives you a direct place to sell and can be connected to social content, but it also means evaluating storefront and payment fees, bringing in traffic, and understanding who handles order support and returns. Read the terms for both your store platform and any fulfillment provider so you know which duties remain yours.

Calculate what each sale could leave you
Work out the economics for each product before publishing it. A practical planning formula is:
Contribution before creator overhead = customer payment − production cost − shipping paid by seller − marketplace or store and payment fees − expected refunds or returns − discounts or advertising costs.
This is a planning calculation, not a promise of profit. It does not automatically account for every business cost, such as your time, taxes, or tools. Separate gross sales, the amount paid out to you, and profit after costs when reviewing results.

| Cost or decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Production and inventory | Is the item made after an order, or must you first buy stock, materials, or equipment? |
| Shipping and returns | Who pays shipping? What happens if an order is returned, refunded, or needs replacement? |
| Platform and payment fees | Which listing, transaction, payment-processing, or other charges apply to your location and sales? |
| Discounts and promotion | Will a discount or paid promotion reduce the amount left from an order? |
| Work and control | Who makes, packs, ships, answers customer questions, and manages the customer experience? |
| Product and delivery details | Check materials, print method, delivery estimates, and return terms. Order samples if useful; do not assume the finished product will match expectations without checking. |
| Discovery | Will the channel surface products to your existing viewers, or must you generate store traffic yourself? |
For Etsy, the Fees & Payments Policy reviewed October 3, 2026 lists a 6.5% transaction fee on the displayed listing price plus shipping and gift wrapping, as well as a $0.20 listing fee. These are not necessarily the only charges: taxes, seller location, and other fees may matter. Check Etsy’s live fee policy before setting a price.
Know who handles orders and customer service
For products sold through a connected YouTube merch retailer or platform, YouTube says that retailer or platform—not Google—is responsible for merchandising, warehousing, fulfillment, refunds, customer service, inventory management, and creator payment. Read the connected provider’s terms so you understand its role and your own: YouTube Help on promoting your products.
For Etsy or a standalone storefront, do not assume a POD provider takes care of every seller obligation. Confirm who sets the listing details, handles customer questions, manages refunds, and pays for shipping or replacements under the terms of the services you use.

Set a clear price and checkout
Price from the complete cost stack rather than the blank product or provider’s base charge alone. Explain product materials and other relevant details, and make shipping, delivery estimates, and return terms easy to find before purchase.
In the United States, FTC guidance says certain charges excluded from an advertised total—such as shipping or taxes—must be disclosed before payment, and the final amount must be shown prominently. This is U.S. guidance; legal requirements depend on the jurisdiction and transaction. Review the FTC guidance on charges and total price disclosure and applicable local rules.
Promote the product and learn from actual orders
Show the merch in context and link directly to the correct listing. Describe fit, materials, delivery, and returns accurately instead of relying on vague claims. If you are eligible for YouTube Shopping, supported content can tag connected-store products, and YouTube provides Shopping analytics; consult its current product promotion guidance for feature details.
After launch, compare actual orders with fees, shipping, discounts, returns, and customer feedback. Use those figures to decide whether to adjust the price, product mix, or promotion. Do not assume views or audience size will translate into a particular sales result.
