Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a CPU-only VPS, start with OBS x264 on the veryfast preset, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and H.264 at 1080p30 / 5 Mbps. If the VPS cannot encode or deliver that reliably, step down to 720p30 / 3 Mbps before trying a slower, more CPU-intensive x264 preset. Treat these as starting settings, not guarantees: test the actual scene and monitor OBS and YouTube stream health.
Recommended OBS settings for a VPS
Use these as a baseline for a continuous YouTube stream when OBS is encoding on the VPS CPU. YouTube’s recommendations depend on ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate; match the H.264 row to the output you select.
| OBS output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | Lower-load fallback when CPU or delivery is constrained. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | For more motion detail at a modest output resolution, if the VPS sustains the load. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | A sensible baseline for static or modest-motion material. |
| 1080p60 | 10 Mbps | Use when motion detail justifies the added frame rate and the VPS sustains it. |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not a guarantee of picture quality for every source. The current YouTube encoder guidance also lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 in its table. Check the current table and choose the row matching the codec, resolution, and frame rate configured for your stream.
Set the encoder and stream output
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and select the Advanced output mode if needed to expose the encoder controls.
- For a CPU-only VPS, choose x264 as the encoder and set the CPU Usage Preset to veryfast. The exact control labels can vary by OBS version and platform.
- Set rate control to CBR, enter the bitrate that matches your chosen H.264 output row, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
- In Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate to the target you intend to stream, such as 1920×1080 at 30 fps or 1280×720 at 30 fps.
- In the stream settings, select YouTube and configure the stream key using YouTube’s live setup. Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest.
YouTube recommends CBR, keyframes every two seconds (and says not to exceed four seconds), and RTMPS. Its encoder guidance is the platform reference for those settings.

Choose a preset and output the VPS can sustain
Why veryfast is a useful x264 starting point
The x264 preset controls how much CPU work goes into compression. Faster presets use less CPU but are less compression-efficient; slower presets require more CPU for a potential image-quality improvement. On a VPS with limited or shared CPU, steady encoding is more useful than selecting a slower preset the instance cannot sustain. OBS Project’s x264 guide explains the tradeoff and explicitly notes that there is no single best setting for every workload.
That guide’s veryfast examples for low-to-medium motion are 720p30 at 3,000–5,000 kbps and 1080p30 at 5,000–8,000 kbps. It was published in 2017, so use YouTube’s current encoder table as the ingest target and the OBS guide for understanding the CPU-versus-compression tradeoff.

When to reduce resolution or frame rate
If OBS reports encoding lag or the VPS cannot hold a stable stream, reduce the output resolution or frame rate first—for example, move from 1080p30 to 720p30 and use the corresponding bitrate. Lower resolution and frame rate reduce encoding work and bandwidth demand. Only consider a slower x264 preset after the workload is stable and there is CPU headroom.
Choose 60 fps only when the extra motion smoothness matters for the content and the VPS can encode and deliver it consistently. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps in its overview.

Hardware encoding, if the VPS exposes it
If OBS can access a supported hardware encoder in your VPS, hardware encoding is generally recommended because it moves encoding work off the CPU. GPU access and encoder availability depend on the provider and instance; verify that the encoder is actually available in OBS. OBS also cautions that older hardware encoders may produce lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.
Test the complete 24/7 setup before relying on it
- Build the actual scene or playlist you plan to leave running, including representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the eventual stream.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream and let it run long enough to reveal sustained CPU, encoding, and network problems. A brief idle scene may not expose issues that appear during motion.
- Watch OBS for encoding lag, dropped frames, and CPU pressure, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. If problems appear, identify whether they are encoding- or delivery-related before changing settings.
- Change one output variable at a time. Lower resolution or frame rate if the system is overloaded; keep the keyframe interval and rate control aligned with YouTube’s guidance.
There is no universal vCPU count or outbound-bandwidth margin established for this use case. VPS CPU sharing, the source scene, and the network path all affect the result, so validate the specific instance rather than relying on a generic sizing rule. Configure bandwidth headroom above the chosen stream bitrate, but determine a safe margin through testing because the sources do not establish one universal figure.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows encoding lag | The CPU cannot encode the scene at the selected output settings. | Reduce resolution or frame rate, then retest. Keep veryfast as the starting x264 preset; do not switch to a slower preset to solve CPU overload. |
| OBS shows dropped frames or YouTube reports delivery trouble | The VPS network path or available outbound capacity may be unstable. | Check the VPS’s actual outbound performance and test again. If needed, lower the output bitrate by moving to a lower resolution/frame-rate target and its matching recommendation. |
| The stream starts but quality or stability varies with motion | The test scene may not represent the real video’s motion and audio load. | Test with content resembling the final stream, then assess OBS and YouTube health under that workload. |
| The selected hardware encoder is missing in OBS | The VPS may not expose a compatible GPU or encoder to the application. | Verify the instance’s hardware access; use x264 if no supported encoder is available. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or connection problem | Stream key, ingest configuration, or transport may be wrong. | Confirm the key and YouTube live settings, use RTMPS where available, and compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance. |
Copyright and YouTube live eligibility
A technically stable 24/7 stream is not automatically eligible to remain live or to earn money. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable live-streaming, copyright, and monetization rules for your channel and content. A VPS, OBS preset, or stream key does not grant rights to music, gameplay footage, or other material, nor does it guarantee monetization. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers stream delivery settings, not permission to use content.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating OBS on a VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploads from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans.
