To loop a guided sleep meditation on YouTube Live with OBS, add the video as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a playlist of separate files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed. Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream, check the preview and stream health, then start the broadcast. Test the full setup before relying on it overnight: looping a file does not prevent a computer, network connection or encoder from stopping.
Before you set up the stream
Check YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days to stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling lets you prepare the event in advance. Eligibility and interface details can change, so check the current Live Control Room for your channel. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance covers the requirements.
Use media you have the right to stream
Use your own meditation recording or audio and visuals licensed for public livestreaming and any archive you intend to keep. A technically valid loop does not grant permission to use a track. YouTube may terminate live streams for copyright violations, and archived streams may receive Content ID claims. Its monetization policy also applies to live streams: generic, repetitive or mass-produced material without meaningful variation or value may be ineligible for monetization. That does not mean every looped meditation stream violates policy; assess the actual content and how it adds value. YouTube’s copyright guidance and YouTube’s channel monetization policies explain those separate issues.
How to loop one meditation video in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, select or create a scene for the broadcast. Add a Media Source in the Sources panel and give it a recognizable name.
- Select the file. In the source properties, select your local video or audio file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3, AAC, WAV and OGG; compatibility can depend on the file and system.
- Enable looping. Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties and confirm the source. OBS describes this setting as replaying the file after playback completes. Start playback in the preview and watch the ending-to-beginning transition; make sure it does not create an unwanted silence, abrupt image change or audio spike.
- Set the scene’s presentation. Check that the video fits the canvas as intended and that the audio meter moves at a sensible level. If the meditation is audio-only, add a still image or other visual only if you have rights to use it and want it shown during the stream.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the source and its loop setting. The precise property labels can vary with OBS versions.

How to loop a playlist of meditation files
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS recommends installing the 64-bit VLC version when using 64-bit OBS.
- Add the playlist source. In the scene’s Sources panel, add VLC Video, then use its properties to add the local files in the playback order you want.
- Enable playlist looping. Check Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as on by default, but verify it rather than assuming the playlist will repeat.
- Test the transitions. Preview each file and the transition between tracks. Check that all files have usable audio, the expected visual, and the rights needed for a public stream and archive.
Choose a single Media Source when one file is enough; VLC Video is useful when you need several files to play in sequence, but introduces the VLC installation dependency. See the OBS source documentation for supported source options.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Get the encoder details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or open the stream and find its stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains how it works.
- Configure OBS streaming. Open OBS Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube or YouTube RTMPS if available and connect your account, or choose the option to use a stream key and enter the URL and key supplied by YouTube. Labels can differ by OBS build; use the encoder details shown for the specific event in Live Control Room.
- Set output for a stable stream. For a straightforward SDR stream, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264 video, CBR rate control and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as a minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them. Choose a lower resolution and bitrate if your tested upload cannot reliably support the higher setting. YouTube’s encoder settings lists the current technical guidance.
- Check upload headroom. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends reserving 20% of upload capacity. Test the actual connection, ideally on the same network and at the time you expect to stream; do not treat a headline internet plan speed as proof of stable upload capacity. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and stream health.
- Run a full-chain rehearsal. Play the meditation in OBS, verify the picture, audio, levels and loop point, and confirm that the encoder is sending a feed. Start the encoder early enough to inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before using Live Control Room’s Go live control where applicable.
Start, monitor and end the broadcast
Once the preview appears and the stream health is acceptable, start the event in Live Control Room if YouTube has not started it automatically. Keep an eye on both OBS and YouTube’s status during the session when possible. A loop setting repeats media; it does not restart OBS after a crash or restore an interrupted internet connection. For an unattended sleep stream, rehearse for as much of the intended duration as practical and have a plan for restarting the encoder or event if it stops.

When you are finished, end the event in YouTube Live Control Room as applicable, then stop streaming in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a stream lasting 12 hours or more will be archived; download or otherwise preserve a recording separately if keeping the full session matters. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes ending and archiving streams.
Troubleshooting an OBS meditation loop
- The file ends instead of repeating: Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. For a multi-file source, verify Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- The VLC Video source is missing or will not play: Install VLC and restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Confirm the playlist paths still point to files that exist.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm OBS is streaming to the URL and stream key for the correct event, and that the stream key was entered without an error. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The stream is unstable or reports poor health: Compare the configured bitrate with measured upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% reserve. Lower the output bitrate or resolution and test again; a reliable network connection matters, and an Ethernet connection may help diagnose Wi-Fi instability but cannot fix inadequate internet service.
- The video plays but the audio is missing or unexpectedly loud: Check that the chosen file contains the expected audio, inspect OBS audio meters and output routing, then listen to the YouTube preview. Recheck the transition between playlist items for silence, clipping or sudden level changes.
- The stream stops during the night: Check OBS, the computer’s power and sleep settings, the media file and network connection. A local OBS setup depends on the machine and connection remaining available; looping alone is not an unattended recovery system.
- The stream is live but the archive is absent or incomplete: Check the session duration and YouTube Studio’s video list. Automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours; retain a separate recording if the full program is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a computer and home connection running is the hard part, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live 24/7. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a home computer left on; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. The service plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
