Check the preview and stream health before taking any action that ends the event. YouTube documents how an encoder connects, but does not promise that an OBS restart will resume the same broadcast or specify a reconnect grace period.
Reconnect OBS to the existing YouTube event
- Open the event in Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select the ongoing event and check whether it is still available. If preserving the current event matters, do not click End Stream or create a replacement event while troubleshooting. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions use the event’s server URL and stream key.
- Relaunch OBS and check its YouTube settings. Confirm that OBS is configured with the server URL and stream key for that event—not a key from another stream. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed. Its setup instructions say, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Start streaming from OBS. Verify that the intended game, microphone and other sources are active, and that OBS is not reporting an encoder error. Give YouTube a moment to receive the feed, then check the event’s preview in Live Control Room.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Look for health messages or errors in Live Control Room before deciding whether the stream has recovered. YouTube’s error indicators include timestamps and distinguish critical from moderate issues.
If the event is no longer available or the feed will not reconnect, YouTube’s public guidance does not establish that a new event will retain the original broadcast or watch page. Creating another event may mean a different broadcast page. Decide whether continuity of the existing event is more important than getting a new feed online before ending or replacing it.
What YouTube does—and does not—guarantee about reconnecting
YouTube documents the encoder connection process and troubleshooting checks, but its reviewed guidance does not give a precise grace period after an encoder disconnect or guarantee that restarting OBS will reattach to the same event. So there is no official number of seconds to rely on, and a successful reconnection cannot be promised. Check the existing event and its preview rather than assuming either that the event has expired or that it will remain open indefinitely.
YouTube’s stream settings guidance calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Resetting a key replaces it; you must update the encoder with the new key. YouTube describes resetting as appropriate for situations such as a compromised key, not as the routine first fix for an OBS crash. Do not reset it unless there is a specific reason.

If OBS reconnects but YouTube still shows no healthy feed
Work through the source of the problem instead of repeatedly changing the event or key. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder, its inputs, system load and internet connection.
OBS, sources or system load
- Check that the correct game or display capture, microphone and other intended sources are enabled and producing signal.
- Look for encoder errors in OBS and check whether the computer is under heavy CPU load. Close unnecessary demanding applications if the encoder is struggling.
- Make sure OBS is up to date, as YouTube recommends using an up-to-date encoder.
Network or YouTube ingestion
- If OBS appears to be sending a healthy feed but YouTube is not receiving it, check the computer’s outbound internet connection and Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- Use any timestamped YouTube error to narrow down when the problem began. If the error identifies an incorrect stream format, YouTube’s live-stream error guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for that ingestion issue.
When to consider the event unrecoverable
If OBS cannot send a feed with the existing event settings and Live Control Room offers no sign of recovery, you may need to choose between continuing with a new event and stopping. YouTube’s public setup guidance explains how to create or schedule streams, but does not say a replacement event preserves the original event or its page. If you start another event, communicate the new link to viewers as needed.

Prepare a backup plan for future broadcasts
A backup encoder can help with planned failover, but testing one before a broadcast is different from proving it will restore an event after OBS has already crashed. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparing the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview before going live, monitoring quality and confirming the local archive is growing. YouTube also recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming playback rolls over.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Monitor your local recording as well: a platform archive and a local copy serve different recovery needs.
