Closing Remote Desktop can change the Windows session’s graphics or audio devices, interrupting what OBS captures even if OBS still appears to be running. That is a plausible cause—not a confirmed explanation for every VPS. First identify whether the picture freezes, audio disappears, OBS loses its YouTube connection, or Windows logs off; each points to a different part of the setup.
What may be happening when you disconnect RDP
Remote Desktop is not always just a window into an otherwise unchanged desktop. In some configurations, connecting through RDP provides graphics or audio devices to the Windows session. When the client disconnects, a device or session state used by OBS may disappear or change. OBS can remain open while its capture source no longer has usable video or audio.
An OBS forum user reported a Windows Server 2012 VPS stream stopping on RDP disconnect, then appearing to run again after reconnecting. A participant attributed that behavior to an emulated graphics device disappearing with the RDP session. Audio can fail separately. Another OBS discussion describes desktop audio stopping when RDP disconnects, with a participant attributing it to the virtual RDP audio device no longer being present. OBS forum discussion, March 8, 2019.

Microsoft’s graphics documentation explains that graphics for an RDP session are encoded on the remote virtual machine and transmitted to the local device. It discusses Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Dev Box, however, and does not establish what happens on an unspecified VPS when its RDP client closes. It notes that GPU acceleration can help graphics-intensive applications and that a remote VM without a discrete GPU uses software encoding for RDP graphics. Diagnose which part of the stream stops
- Reproduce the disconnect and classify the symptom. Is the image frozen, is audio missing, has OBS disconnected from YouTube, or has the Windows session logged off? Do not assume these are one failure; community reports describe graphics and audio problems separately.
- Reconnect and inspect OBS. Check the preview and audio meters, then check whether OBS still reports an active connection to YouTube. A frozen preview suggests a capture or session issue; silent meters suggest an audio input issue; a lost YouTube connection suggests encoder or network state. These are diagnostic inferences from the different failure types, not a tested procedure guaranteed to isolate every cause.
- Ask the VPS provider what persists without RDP. Specifically ask whether the Windows desktop session remains active after client disconnect, whether a supported GPU or display device is exposed outside the RDP session, and whether an audio device independent of RDP is available. Device and session behavior depends on the provider and VPS configuration.
- Match the fix to the workflow. If you need live browser interaction or dynamic desktop capture, preserve a graphical session and capture path that remain available after disconnect, or move capture to an environment designed to keep them active. If you only need continuous playback of existing video files, that is a different workflow and may not require desktop capture.
When to check YouTube connection settings
Check transport settings only if OBS has actually lost its connection to YouTube. YouTube supports RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the RTMPS server URL and stream key, then enter them in an encoder that supports RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s current setup instructions at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Correct RTMPS settings can address an encoder-to-YouTube transport problem; they cannot restore a missing Windows desktop capture source or audio device. YouTube’s encoder guide describes software and standalone hardware encoders and lists cloud services, including a service described for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. A prerecorded-media service does not, by itself, solve live browser or desktop capture.
Choose a solution that fits what you are streaming

Common problems and what to check
OBS is open after reconnecting, but the preview is frozen
The process still being visible does not prove its capture source remained available during the disconnect. Check the capture source and ask the provider whether the display or graphics device persists outside RDP. The forum explanation about an emulated graphics device is plausible, but not a universal Windows rule.

The picture works, but audio has stopped
Check OBS audio meters and the selected input. If the source depends on an RDP virtual audio device, that device may no longer be available after disconnect. Ask whether the VPS provides an independent audio device; changing RTMPS settings will not restore local audio capture.
OBS has disconnected from YouTube
Check the encoder’s connection status and network path. If the failure is transport-related, verify that the current RTMPS URL and stream key are entered correctly and that the encoder supports RTMPS. If OBS remains connected but the preview is frozen or silent, investigate capture or audio instead.

The whole session seems to have ended
Distinguish closing the RDP client from logging off Windows. The available sources do not establish your provider’s session policy. Ask the provider whether a client disconnect leaves the desktop session running and what session or resource policies apply.
