For most live streams, use H.264 (AVC) unless your platform and chosen ingest method explicitly support another codec. H.264 is the safer compatibility choice; HEVC (H.265) and AV1 can be more bitrate-efficient, but only help when the full path—from encoder to platform—supports them and your hardware can encode reliably.
What a codec does—and why the platform matters
A codec compresses and decompresses video. It is separate from the streaming protocol, which carries the encoded video to a service. A service may accept a codec in one ingest workflow but not another, so do not choose from a general codec list without checking the destination and protocol.
For example, YouTube Help’s live encoder settings list H.264, HEVC, and AV1, while Google’s protocol comparison gives a more specific picture for third-party ingest. The two documents answer different questions and should not be read as proof that every codec works on every YouTube ingest route.
Codec comparison at a glance
| Codec | When to consider it | Trade-offs and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 / AVC | Use when compatibility is the priority or the destination’s requirements are uncertain. | OBS calls it its default and describes it as broadly playable. That is not a guarantee for every service or ingest mode. |
| H.265 / HEVC | Consider it when the platform and ingest method explicitly support it, particularly if higher resolution or HDR matters. | OBS describes better quality at the same bitrate or file size than H.264, but notes less widespread use in web streaming and more restrictive licensing. Confirm support on the exact delivery path. |
| AV1 | Consider it when the destination’s ingest workflow and your encoder both support it. | OBS describes improved quality or file size compared with HEVC, but says real-time software encoding can require a high-end CPU. YouTube Help lists AV1 in its live encoder settings, but the protocol comparison does not list AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, or DASH. Do not infer a supported protocol path without confirmation. |
| VP9 | Relevant to YouTube DASH ingest, as listed in Google’s protocol comparison. | The cited material does not establish VP9 as the best general-purpose creator encoder choice. |
OBS’s codec guide is dated 2023-03-26; its listed hardware generations and encoder support are a starting point, not a substitute for checking your current GPU, driver, encoder, and destination.

YouTube: match the codec to the ingest protocol
Google’s third-party ingest protocol comparison, updated 2026-09-14, lists the following codecs for YouTube:
| Ingest protocol | Codecs listed | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP and RTMPS | H.264 | For this documented third-party ingest path, H.264 is the listed choice. |
| HLS | H.264 and HEVC | Use HEVC only when your encoder and the selected workflow support it. |
| DASH | H.264 and VP9 | The comparison lists VP9 for this protocol, not as a general recommendation for every YouTube stream. |
The comparison describes HLS and DASH as encrypted and typically higher-latency than RTMP because they are segment-based. YouTube Help separately recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission and lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 among live encoder settings. Check the protocol-specific documentation for the route you actually use rather than treating the Help page’s general settings as universal protocol support.

YouTube HDR
For YouTube HDR, the current Help page specifies HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. If HDR is required, follow the documented HEVC settings and verify the selected ingest path accepts them.
YouTube bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube Help recommendations, not universal codec requirements. The AV1/HEVC and H.264 values are shown separately as grouped by YouTube; the figures do not establish that AV1 and HEVC perform identically. Choose the row matching both your resolution and frame rate.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These values come from the YouTube Help page accessed in 2026. Its live encoder guidance also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio.
Choose and test a codec in six steps
- Identify the destination and ingest route. Find the service’s current encoder guide and confirm whether you are using RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, DASH, or another workflow.
- Select a codec explicitly supported on that route. For YouTube third-party ingest, Google’s comparison lists H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS, H.264 and HEVC for HLS, and H.264 and VP9 for DASH.
- Check encoding capacity. In OBS, confirm which hardware or software encoder is available. OBS warns that real-time AV1 software encoding can demand a high-end CPU; if encoding overloads, use a supported hardware encoder or switch to a less demanding compatible codec.
- Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes together. Use the destination’s recommendation for the exact resolution and frame rate. For YouTube, start with the matching bitrate above, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Account for HDR if you need it. On YouTube, use the documented HEVC route for HDR; AV1 is not supported for YouTube HDR according to its Help page.
- Run a representative test and watch stream health. YouTube advises running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Test with representative motion and audio before the real broadcast, then monitor the service’s stream-health indicators.
Multistreaming and gaming setups
If sending the same show to multiple destinations, use a codec accepted by every destination on its chosen ingest route, or configure separate outputs if your workflow supports them. There is no evidence-backed universal codec setting for all platforms; check each destination’s current guide. A GPU with hardware AV1 encoding is only relevant if the service and ingest workflow accept AV1 and your existing encoder cannot provide it. OBS’s 2023 guide identifies hardware AV1 encoding on AMD RX 7000-series, NVIDIA RTX 40-series, and Intel Arc GPUs; verify current device and software support before buying hardware.

Keep a YouTube stream running without leaving a gaming PC on
If your goal is to keep a channel live with uploaded gameplay or other prerecorded videos, the codec choice still needs to fit YouTube’s ingest rules. For a do-it-yourself broadcast, configure an encoder you control, select a supported codec and bitrate, send it through a compatible ingest protocol, and monitor the stream as described above. This is different from going live from a camera or capturing a game in real time.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Common codec and stream problems
- The platform rejects the encoder settings: Check the selected ingest protocol, not just the platform’s general list of codecs. Switch to a codec explicitly listed for that route.
- Video stutters or the encoder overloads: Real-time encoding may exceed CPU or GPU capacity, especially with software AV1. Check encoder load, then lower the encoding demand or use another supported encoder.
- The stream drops frames or loses quality: Compare the configured bitrate with the service recommendation and a tested upload connection. YouTube recommends a speed test and monitoring stream health.
- HDR does not appear as expected on YouTube: Check that you selected the documented HEVC workflow; YouTube Help says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- A codec works at one destination but not another: Each service and ingest route can differ. Check each destination’s current documentation or create distinct outputs if supported.
For up-to-date settings, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, Google’s YouTube ingest protocol comparison, and the OBS audio/video formats guide. The Twitch broadcasting-guidelines page at Twitch Help did not provide accessible codec confirmation in the material reviewed here, so verify Twitch’s current official guidance before choosing a Twitch codec.
