To run a 24/7 YouTube live stream on an Azure virtual machine, host an encoder on a Linux VM, configure it to send video and audio to your YouTube Live Control Room ingest URL and stream key over RTMPS, and monitor the encoder and stream. The VM can keep the encoder running without your home computer staying on, but “24/7” is an intended schedule—not an uptime guarantee. A continuous stream also uses Azure resources continuously, and you need a plan for encoder failures and YouTube’s archive limits.

How the Azure-to-YouTube setup works

The VM runs an encoder; it is not itself a YouTube streaming service. The basic path is source media or a live input → encoder on an Azure Linux VM → YouTube Live over RTMPS. For a prerecorded broadcast, the media must be available to the encoder on the VM. For a camera or other live production, the live feed must reach the encoder, which adds an input path to configure and monitor.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. The encoder sends the outgoing stream to the YouTube ingest endpoint; you do not need to open a public media-ingest port on the VM just to send that feed.

Check YouTube eligibility and create the stream

Enable livestreaming before launch day

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so activate it and run a test well before your planned start.

Get the ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or schedule a stream and locate its stream URL and stream key.
  3. Enter those values in your encoder’s YouTube destination settings, selecting the RTMPS endpoint YouTube provides.
  4. Keep the stream key secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or support posts. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.

YouTube may offer separate stream keys for separate configurations. Use the key associated with the stream setup you intend to run, and verify that the encoder is pointed at the matching event.

Create and secure the Azure Linux VM

Choose the region and VM capacity

In the Azure portal, create a Linux virtual machine in a region suitable for your source and operating needs. Size it for the encoder workload and, critically, sustained outbound network capacity. Azure allocates different throughput by VM size, and outbound traffic across the VM’s network interfaces counts against its allocated bandwidth. Select a size using the specifications for your chosen region and workload; do not assume a VM’s advertised network capacity is available exclusively to the stream.

Allow headroom above the encoded bitrate for transport overhead and any other VM traffic. A stream that appears to work briefly can still be unreliable if the available egress capacity is too close to the encoder’s sustained output.

Use key-based administration and restrict inbound access

  1. During VM creation, choose SSH-key authentication and store the private key securely. Use SSH for administration rather than exposing password-based access.
  2. Configure the network security group to allow SSH only from the IP addresses or ranges that need to administer the VM. Avoid leaving administrative access open to the entire internet.
  3. Do not add an inbound rule for a media-ingest service unless your architecture specifically requires one. A VM sending its encoder output to YouTube needs outbound connectivity; it does not need an exposed public ingest port for that purpose.
  4. Decide whether the design needs an assigned public IP for administration or predictable outbound connectivity. Azure notes that public IPs can incur fees, so account for that choice in the estimate.

Install and configure your encoder

Connect to the VM over SSH and install an encoder using the instructions for the Linux distribution and encoder you selected. The encoder installation command depends on those choices, so use their applicable official instructions rather than copying an unverified command. If the source is a file, place it where the VM can read it and confirm that storage and permissions allow the encoder to access it.

Set encoder output for YouTube

Choose a supported format and bitrate

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Choose a resolution and bitrate that suit the source and remain within the VM’s sustained egress capacity. Use YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations for the specific output quality you choose; one bitrate is not right for every resolution, frame rate, or type of footage.

For a game stream, fast motion and detailed scenes can make weak encoding settings more visible, while a static scene may be less demanding. Check representative gameplay, overlays, and audio at the intended output settings rather than judging from a still frame. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured input.

Set keyframes and audio

Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that setting. YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds and says they should not be more than four seconds apart. Configure the audio codec as AAC or MP3, and check that the selected input includes the audio you intend to broadcast.

Verify the source and destination settings

  • Confirm the encoder is reading the intended file or live input, not an empty path or the wrong device.
  • Confirm the destination is YouTube’s RTMPS URL and the stream key is the correct one for the event.
  • Match the output resolution and frame rate to what the source can actually provide.
  • Keep the encoder’s bitrate within both YouTube’s guidance for the selected output and the VM’s available egress capacity.

Keep the encoder running and plan for recovery

A long-running broadcast needs a process-management and recovery design, not just an encoder that starts successfully once. A process supervisor can be configured to launch the encoder and restart it after an exit, but a restart alone does not ensure the source is available, the stream key is valid, or YouTube has resumed receiving the feed. The exact setup depends on the encoder and Linux distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the chosen encoder’s loop, reconnect, and restart behavior against its own documentation before relying on it. Test a deliberate network interruption, a VM restart, an expired or changed stream key, and a source that reaches the end of its file. Do not treat any single retry setting as proof of uninterrupted streaming. VM, network, encoder, source, or YouTube ingest problems can all interrupt a broadcast.

Test the stream and monitor it during operation

Run a representative test

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test event and the same source, encoder settings, and network path planned for the actual broadcast.
  2. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before making the event public.
  3. Inspect video, audio, synchronization, and playback through representative motion and quieter scenes.
  4. Confirm the encoder remains active and the VM has adequate network capacity during the test.
  5. Test the recovery cases that matter to your design, including an encoder exit and a VM restart, before depending on an automatic restart.

Watch for the failure point, not just the live badge

Monitor the encoder process and VM network metrics as well as YouTube’s stream health. A live indicator does not prove that the intended source is continuing correctly or that audio and video remain usable. Decide who or what will notice a stopped encoder, a depleted source, a disconnected ingest, or a VM restart, and what the response will be.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

  • YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that livestreaming is enabled, the event is the one you intended, and the encoder uses the matching RTMPS URL and stream key. If the key was changed or exposed, update the encoder with the replacement.
  • The stream starts but drops or becomes unstable: Check the encoder’s sustained bitrate against the VM’s available outbound capacity, including overhead and other traffic. Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the encoder’s own status.
  • Video or audio is missing or incorrect: Confirm the selected source, output codec, and audio input. Test again with representative material and inspect the YouTube preview before relying on the broadcast.
  • The broadcast stops when a file ends: Treat end-of-file behavior as an encoder/source configuration issue. Verify the encoder’s documented loop behavior with the actual file; do not assume that starting a process makes a finite recording repeat indefinitely.
  • The encoder does not return after a VM restart or process exit: Review the process manager’s launch and restart configuration and test it deliberately. A process restart will not fix a missing source, invalid key, or unavailable network path.
  • SSH administration is unavailable: Check the VM’s status, the client’s SSH key, and whether the network security group allows access from the administrator’s current address. Keep administrative exposure restricted while troubleshooting.

Plan Azure costs and YouTube event boundaries

Estimate all continuously used resources

A 24/7 schedule means the VM and any attached resources are needed continuously, not only while you are at your computer. Estimate the selected VM and Linux image, OS and data disks, any public IP, and applicable outbound data transfer in Azure’s calculator or portal estimate for the chosen region and configuration. The total depends on VM size, bitrate, region, storage, and network design, so there is no reliable universal monthly figure for this setup.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an indefinite 24/7 event will be saved as one complete archive. Decide how to handle event boundaries and recordings, and verify the event and archive behavior you need before broadcasting continuously.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a simpler cloud alternative to maintaining an Azure VM and encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. Every plan has the same features; only the billing length changes. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
