To switch between two pre-recorded playlists during one YouTube live broadcast, keep OBS streaming and change which playlist source—or scene—is visible. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room during the handoff.
For playlists, use OBS’s VLC Video source, which requires VLC media player. You can place both playlist sources in one scene and toggle their visibility, or put one source in each of two scenes and switch scenes.
Choose how to organize the two playlists

Either method changes the content OBS sends while leaving the stream output running. Scene-switching hotkeys are optional; you can switch from OBS’s interface instead.
Set up two VLC playlists in OBS
- Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; OBS lists this as a requirement for its VLC Video source.
- Add playlist A. In your chosen OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and add the media files in the order you want them to play.
- Set playback options. Configure Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist according to how you want the playlist to run. Leave shuffle off if the file order matters.
- Add playlist B. Create a second VLC Video source and add its files in order. If using two scenes, put one playlist source in each scene instead.
- Match the presentation. Keep the sources’ size and position consistent if you want the picture to remain in the same place when switching. In the two-scene setup, make corresponding overlays and other scene elements consistent where needed.
- Check Visibility Behaviour. OBS documents the default as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” Choose the available behavior that fits whether the inactive playlist should stop, continue, or restart when shown. Test the timing you need; the result can depend on OBS and VLC behavior.
- Test before going live. Preview both playlists and check video, audio, and transitions in a private or unlisted stream before relying on the setup in a public broadcast. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing a stream before the real event.
Switch playlists while the stream is live
- Start the broadcast as usual and confirm OBS is streaming.
- For two sources in one scene, show playlist B and hide playlist A. For two scenes, switch to the scene containing playlist B.
- Check that the intended video and audio are reaching the output. When you want to switch back, show playlist A and hide playlist B, or return to its scene.
OBS supports showing and hiding sources and switching scenes; you can use its interface or configure hotkeys for those actions. A transition can make a scene change look smoother, but it is not required to keep the broadcast going.

Keep the broadcast open during the handoff
Do not stop OBS’s streaming output or choose YouTube’s End Stream action to change playlists. YouTube Help says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” A playlist or scene switch changes what OBS sends; it is distinct from deliberately ending the encoder output. YouTube’s instructions for scheduled streams also describe ending the event in Live Control Room and stopping encoder content.
Troubleshoot common handoff problems
- The VLC Video source is unavailable or does not load: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The new playlist starts from the beginning or stops when hidden: check the source’s Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops playback while hidden and restarts it when visible; test another available behavior if you need different timing.
- Both playlists’ audio is audible: ensure the inactive source is not producing audio, and test the visibility behavior. In a one-scene setup, show the incoming source and hide the outgoing one as part of the handoff.
- The picture shifts or changes size: compare source dimensions, transforms, and positioning; make them consistent if the layout should not change.
- The broadcast ends instead of switching: check that you did not select Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room. For future handoffs, switch source visibility or scenes while the encoder remains active.
