If your YouTube livestream appeal was rejected and the stream was removed with a copyright strike, you may still be able to submit a counter notification, ask the claimant to retract the removal request, or complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire. Which option fits depends on the notice you received and whether you believe the removal was mistaken. A counter notification is a legal request, not another routine appeal.
First, check whether you have a claim, a removal, or a strike
YouTube treats a Content ID claim and a copyright strike as different things. A Content ID claim is not itself a strike. A claimant may reject an appeal against a claim and submit a copyright removal request; if YouTube considers that request valid, it removes the content and applies a strike.
Check YouTube’s notice and your channel’s current copyright status before choosing a next step. Establish whether you have only a rejected Content ID appeal, an effective removal and strike, a pending counter notification, or a counter notification rejection. The routes below apply to a removal request and strike, not simply to a rejected claim.
If removal has not happened yet, check for a scheduled removal window
In cases where YouTube uses a scheduled removal request, the notice may give you seven days to act before removal becomes effective. YouTube identifies seeking a retraction as an option during that period; in the relevant circumstances, canceling an appeal may also be an option. Follow the instructions and deadline in the notice you received, because this window applies only where YouTube has scheduled the removal.

What options remain after the stream is removed?

When a counter notification may be appropriate
YouTube describes a counter notification as an option when content was removed by mistake or misidentification. That can include a creator who believes their use qualifies for an exception such as fair use. A counter notification is a legal request: submit one only if you can truthfully make the required statements about your right to use the content.
YouTube must receive the legally required information before it can forward the counter notification. If it is rejected for missing information, YouTube says you may submit a new counter notification with the required information. A corrected submission is not a guarantee that the stream will be restored, and filing one starts a legal process. YouTube also permits an authorized representative to submit a counter notification.

What happens after YouTube forwards it?
If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. If YouTube does not receive that evidence within the period, the content may be reinstated unless you deleted it. The claimant may still provide evidence of legal action after the deadline or after reinstatement, and YouTube may remove the content again. Strike status may be reassessed after a court decision.
What if your counter notification is rejected?
Read the rejection notice to identify what YouTube says is missing. If the issue is missing legally required information and you still believe the removal was mistaken, YouTube says you can submit a new counter notification containing that information. Do not assume that a rejection means the claimant’s legal position has been decided, or that a revised submission will result in reinstatement.

When waiting can clear the strike
YouTube says a strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active copyright strikes. Waiting for expiration clears the strike under those conditions; it does not restore the removed stream. Three copyright strikes within 90 days make a channel subject to termination, so check your active strike count and notices rather than assuming you can safely wait.
How to choose a next step
- Read the exact notice. Confirm whether YouTube removed the stream, applied a strike, scheduled removal, or rejected a counter notification.
- Check the facts behind the material. Identify what was used, whether you had permission or a licence, and why you believe the use was lawful or the removal misidentified the content.
- If removal is scheduled, act before the notice’s deadline. Consider whether seeking a retraction is appropriate and follow the options shown in that notice.
- If the removal is effective, compare the routes. Seek a retraction, consider a counter notification only if you can make its legal statements truthfully, or complete Copyright School and wait if you meet YouTube’s conditions.
- Get legal advice if the decision is uncertain. This is especially important if the dispute involves licensing, an exception such as fair use, or a possible legal action.
