FFmpeg’s -reconnect options are documented for HTTP, not as automatic retries for an RTMP publishing output. To recover a YouTube broadcast after FFmpeg loses its RTMP/RTMPS connection, run the publishing process under a supervisor or wrapper that restarts it if it exits. This can restore publishing, but it cannot recover frames missed during the outage or guarantee uninterrupted playback for viewers.
Why FFmpeg’s -reconnect flags are not the RTMP fix
FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, and -reconnect_on_network_error in its HTTP protocol documentation. The RTMP and RTMPS protocols are documented separately, with an FLV publishing example. These HTTP options should not be treated as a general retry mechanism for a failed RTMP output.
That distinction matters because input and output failures are different. An HTTP input may be retried according to HTTP protocol options; a disconnected RTMP publishing process needs recovery at the process or deployment level. Adding HTTP flags to the output does not make FFmpeg resume publishing to YouTube.
Configure YouTube ingest and FFmpeg first
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the intended stream and copy its Live server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to publish to your stream.
- Configure FFmpeg to publish to that endpoint using the stream key. Use the RTMPS endpoint when YouTube provides it and your FFmpeg build supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows the RTMP-style FLV output pattern, but the exact command depends on your input, encoding settings, and endpoint.
- Do not add HTTP-specific
-reconnectflags as a supposed RTMP-output retry fix. Instead, plan how the publishing process will be restarted if it exits. - For a scheduled event, wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and then select Go live. Test the complete workflow before relying on it for a broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Use a supervisor to restart FFmpeg after it exits
Run FFmpeg under a service manager, process supervisor, container restart policy, or small wrapper appropriate to your host. Configure it to restart after an unexpected exit, with logging and bounded backoff rather than a rapid, unlimited restart loop. Exact configuration depends on the operating system and deployment; the example below describes the logic, not a universal drop-in command.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
while service_is_enabled:
run ffmpeg publishing process
record exit status and logs
wait with bounded backoff
Restarting only after FFmpeg exits (or after a deliberate health check declares it unhealthy) avoids launching overlapping publishers. Keep the supervisor’s logs: the exit status and FFmpeg output can distinguish a network failure from an invalid key, an encoder error, or an input that has ended. This supervision approach is operational guidance, not an RTMP retry option documented by FFmpeg.
Check what happens to the input when the process restarts
A live capture device or live feed may produce current content again once FFmpeg starts, subject to the source and encoder recovering. A finite video file is different: a fresh FFmpeg process may begin at the start of the file. If you need to continue at a particular position, the wrapper or application must manage that position; a basic restart does not resume it automatically.

Choose stream settings your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing quality suited to the available connection. Its encoder settings guidance gives bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the row that matches your actual stream rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees against a weak or interrupted connection.
If a stream repeatedly drops, test the outbound connection and consider reducing resolution or bitrate to a level it can reliably sustain. Moving from unstable Wi-Fi to a stable wired connection may help with local wireless problems, but it will not fix every ISP, routing, or endpoint issue—and it does not add FFmpeg restart behavior.

Diagnose the failure by layer
After a test disconnect, check whether FFmpeg actually exited before changing retry settings. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder software, the feed in the encoder, encoder errors and CPU load, and the outbound internet connection.
- Did FFmpeg exit? Review its logs and exit status. If it exited, verify the supervisor detected the exit and applied its restart policy.
- Is the source and encode healthy? Inspect the input feed, encoder errors, and CPU load. A saturated system or failed source will not be repaired by network retries.
- Is outbound connectivity stable? Test the upload connection and compare the chosen bitrate with what it can sustain.
- Are the ingest endpoint and key correct? Recheck the Live server URL and stream key in the intended YouTube stream. Do not expose the key in logs or shared configuration.
- Did YouTube receive the restarted feed? Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health after the test. A process restart can restore publishing, but not the media frames lost while disconnected.
What a restart can—and cannot—restore
A supervisor can bring FFmpeg back after the publishing process exits. It cannot recover frames that were never sent during the outage, and a restart does not establish that YouTube will present the result as one uninterrupted viewer experience or continuous event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after streaming ends, but that archival guidance does not define how every brief publishing interruption affects continuity. Test the specific setup in your channel’s Live Control Room.
