To keep captions visible as a 24/7 YouTube story stream moves between prerecorded episodes, prepare captions for each episode and separately configure captions for the live broadcast. An episode’s YouTube caption track is not a substitute for captions delivered with the live stream. Choose either embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions or a supported HTTP POST caption feed, avoid ultra-low latency when closed captions are required, and test the actual episode transitions and replay.
Two caption layers: episode tracks and live captions
A prerecorded episode can have its own timed caption or subtitle track in YouTube Studio. The continuous broadcast is a separate captioning path: captions can be embedded in the outgoing video signal or sent to YouTube through a supported HTTP caption feed. Do not assume a caption track attached to an episode automatically carries over to the live broadcast when your playout switches to the next episode.
YouTube documents the live delivery methods, but does not promise that captions will automatically follow episode changes in a 24/7 playout setup. Continuity therefore depends on the complete caption and streaming pipeline, and should be verified on your own broadcast.
Prepare captions for every prerecorded episode
- In YouTube Studio, open the video for an episode and go to its subtitles/captions controls. Confirm that the track is in the correct language and has timings that align with the spoken audio. YouTube’s instructions are at Add subtitles & captions.
- If you upload a caption file, use one that includes timing. Alternatively, YouTube Studio supports manually entering captions or auto-syncing a transcript. For auto-sync, the transcript must be in the same language as the spoken audio; YouTube says processing may take a few minutes and does not recommend the method for videos longer than one hour or with poor audio quality.
- Check the finished track against the episode, especially its opening, scene changes, dialogue overlaps, and ending. Auto-generated captions can be delayed or unavailable, and may contain errors; review and correct them rather than assuming they are accurate.
YouTube lists possible reasons automatic captions may be missing or inaccurate, including unsupported language, poor sound, long duration, extended silence at the start, overlapping speakers, or simultaneous languages. Its guidance is at Use automatic captioning.

Choose how the live broadcast will deliver captions
| Live method | What it requires | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 | The encoder or playout system must embed supported captions in the outgoing video signal, and the YouTube broadcast must be configured for embedded captions. | Confirm the outgoing signal contains captions and that they remain synchronized after each episode switch. |
| HTTP POST caption feed | A supported captioning workflow sends captions to the broadcast’s caption ingestion URL. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed. | Confirm the caption software/provider is sending to the correct ingestion URL and that the feed stays aligned through transitions and restarts. |
YouTube’s live-caption guidance describes both methods and the ingestion URL workflow: Live caption requirements. The YouTube Live Streaming API identifies broadcast caption modes as disabled, HTTP POST, and embedded; set the broadcast mode to match the method you actually use.
YouTube’s Help page names Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net as examples in its live-caption guidance. Their inclusion does not establish that a product will automate episode transitions or work with every encoder. Check the vendor’s current requirements and compatibility for your setup.

Match the latency setting to the caption method
Do not use ultra-low latency if your stream needs closed captions. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions or resolutions higher than 1080p.
YouTube’s HTTP caption Help workflow describes adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. That instruction belongs to that particular workflow; it is not a universal delay requirement for embedded captions or every live-caption setup. Follow the instructions for your chosen caption system and confirm the resulting broadcast delay is acceptable for the stream.

- Watch and listen through the final seconds of one episode, the transition, and the opening of the next. Confirm captions do not vanish, restart late, or continue showing the previous episode’s dialogue.
- Check caption language, timing, and synchronization at the beginning and during each episode. Look for timing drift as well as a clean handoff.
- Repeat the check after a stream or encoder restart, and after any recovery from an interruption. Verify that the broadcast caption mode and, if applicable, the HTTP feed reconnect as intended.
- Check the replay separately. Live captions and replay captions follow different behavior, so a successful live check does not establish that the replay has the expected track.
YouTube’s guidance covers caption delivery and broadcast settings, but does not specify a universal transition test or guarantee for every encoder and playout system. Validate your actual setup rather than relying on a configuration label alone.

YouTube documents automatic live captions as English-only and subject to its stated operating and availability conditions. They are a limited fallback, not a substitute for preparing episode tracks and configuring a dependable live caption method.

YouTube says automatic live captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends. Captions for the replay are generated separately through the VOD process and may differ from what viewers saw live. Review the replay’s captions on their own; see YouTube’s automatic caption guidance.
Troubleshoot missing or discontinuous captions
Captions are missing from a prerecorded episode
- In YouTube Studio, check whether the episode has an owner-provided caption track or an automatically generated one, and confirm the track’s language.
- If relying on automatic captions, allow for processing and check the audio and language conditions YouTube identifies. Correct errors in the generated track rather than treating it as final.
Episode captions exist, but captions disappear from the live output
- Check the broadcast’s caption mode and confirm it matches the live method: embedded captions or HTTP POST.
- For embedded captions, inspect whether the encoder or playout system is actually putting captions into the outgoing signal.
- For HTTP POST, confirm the caption software/provider has the correct ingestion URL and is sending a feed to the intended stream entry point.
- Check the latency mode. Ultra-low latency does not support closed captions in the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
YouTube describes these separate mechanisms but does not give one diagnostic sequence that applies to every encoder. Use the checks above to isolate the relevant part of your specific pipeline.
Captions work live but are missing or different on the replay
Check the replay’s caption track separately. YouTube says automatic live captions are not retained after the stream and VOD captions are generated separately, so replay captions may be absent or different.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 YouTube story stream uses uploaded episodes, StreamNeo can loop those videos from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo keeps the video stream running; prepare and configure captions separately, then test their continuity across episode changes.
