How to Make a 24/7 Brown Noise Stream for Sleep on YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run brown noise live on YouTube around the clock, prepare an original or properly licensed audio loop and a visual, then send both through an encoder connected to YouTube Live. A local encoder such as OBS needs a computer and internet connection that stay on; a cloud service can keep the stream running without your home computer. First verify that your channel can livestream, test the complete audio and video path, and plan separately for replays: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a 24-hour broadcast should not be assumed to produce one complete replay.

Before you start: check channel access and content rights

Enable live streaming in advance

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current guidance says live streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming basics and encoder setup guide.

Use audio and visuals you are allowed to broadcast

Create your own brown-noise recording or obtain one with permission that covers livestreaming. The same applies to any image, animation, sample, or other material in the broadcast. A sound category is not a license for a particular recording: do not assume that an audio file is free to use just because it contains noise rather than music. Keep source files and license or permission records, and avoid commercial music, stock visuals, or another channel’s loop unless the applicable rights allow your use.

For a basic stream, a still image or gentle visual loop is enough; a camera and microphone are not needed for prerecorded audio. Choose an image that is readable on phone and TV screens, and make the title and description accurately describe the sound.

Choose how the stream will stay online

YouTube supports computer software and standalone hardware encoders, and its verified encoder directory also lists cloud services. The right choice depends on whether you want to maintain a local system or leave continuous streaming to a cloud service.

Approach Best suited to What to consider
StreamNeo — cloud service A creator who wants uploaded video to loop to YouTube without keeping a home computer running It plays uploaded videos, supports playlists and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and charges one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps. Check that your audio-and-image file is prepared as a video before uploading.
Local software encoder, such as OBS A creator with a suitable computer who wants local control The computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available. Account for power use, connection interruptions, and how you will restart the broadcast after a local failure.
Other cloud service, such as Gyre or Upstream A creator looking for a cloud-hosted continuous stream YouTube lists these services, but check current support for a single audio-and-image loop, recurring price, terms, and outage recovery before choosing one.
Hardware encoder An existing production setup that benefits from an appliance-style encoder Features vary by model; check supported inputs, scheduling and looping capabilities, remote monitoring, support, and cost. A dedicated device is usually unnecessary for a simple audio-and-image stream.

YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software. You do not need to buy a camera, microphone, or dedicated mini PC just to broadcast an already-prepared loop. If using a local encoder, first see whether a computer you already own can handle the job.

Make the brown-noise video file

  1. Create or clear the audio. Make a continuous brown-noise recording or confirm the recording’s license permits your intended use. Save the original audio and rights records.
  2. Build the visual. Combine the audio with a still image or gentle loop using a video editor. Make sure the audio continues for the intended loop duration and the visual does not introduce unwanted flashes or abrupt transitions.
  3. Listen through the loop point. Check the transition from the end back to the beginning for silence, a sudden level change, or a click. Listen on the output device viewers are likely to use, such as headphones or speakers.
  4. Export and inspect the file. Confirm the video plays from start to finish, the image is visible, and the audio is present and at a consistent level. Keep the project file so you can fix the loop without rebuilding it.

A static image reduces visual motion and is simple to encode, but viewers still need a valid video signal: an audio-only source is not a substitute for configuring the video stream.

Set up a local stream with OBS

  1. Install and open OBS. YouTube identifies OBS as a free, open-source encoder. Add your prepared video as a media source, or add the image and audio as separate sources. For a media source, enable looping if you want the file to repeat.
  2. Check playback and audio levels. Play the source inside OBS and confirm its audio meter moves. Listen for a clean loop, sensible level, and no unintended silence. Make sure the image remains on screen throughout.
  3. Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create a stream or schedule it in Live Control Room.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into OBS’s streaming settings. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast, so do not share or publish it.
  5. Set the encoder format and test. Configure a supported protocol and encoding, start OBS, and wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health information. Confirm the preview shows the intended visual and YouTube receives the audio. For a scheduled broadcast, return at the scheduled time, check the preview, and follow the Live Control Room prompt to go live.
  6. Monitor the stream. Watch the broadcast at launch and after changing the encoder, network, or source. Keep the computer, OBS, and internet connection running for as long as you are hosting locally.

Use stable encoder settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery; the protocol is described in Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Resolution and bitrate

Choose a resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. For context, YouTube’s general H.264 recommendations are 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Those figures are general live-video guidance, not a custom profile for a static brown-noise image; a still does not need extra bitrate simply because the encoder permits it. Prioritize a stable connection over an unnecessarily high setting.

Audio

For stereo audio, YouTube’s documented settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use the same audio configuration during testing as during the broadcast. Confirm that the signal reaches the encoder and that the loop does not click or jump in volume.

Plan for failures and replays

Continuous live does not mean one complete replay

YouTube Help, in “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder,” says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That guidance establishes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not promise that a 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If a complete replay matters, record a copy separately or consider shorter sessions, and check YouTube’s current behavior before relying on any approach for archiving longer broadcasts.

What to monitor

  • Encoder status: Confirm the encoder is still sending and the source has not stopped or reached the end without looping.
  • YouTube stream health: Check Live Control Room for warnings and confirm the preview remains current.
  • Audio and picture: Verify both are present after launch and after any source or setting change.
  • Local system and network: For a locally hosted stream, a computer shutdown, encoder crash, or internet interruption can stop delivery. Decide how you will notice and restart it.

Copyright, monetization, and sleep claims

Use original or cleared recordings and visuals. No blanket conclusion about copyright follows from the fact that a recording contains brown noise; rights depend on the particular recording, samples, arrangement, and visual materials.

YouTube’s encoder guide says YouTube Partner Program membership is required to monetize a live stream. That eligibility condition does not establish that a repetitive brown-noise broadcast will pass monetization review or earn revenue. Do not promise income. Likewise, describe the stream as ambient sound that some listeners choose for sleep, not as a treatment or a guaranteed way to improve sleep.
