You can run a continuous fan-noise broadcast by looping a video and audio source through an encoder such as FFmpeg on a VPS, then sending that feed to YouTube Live. The VPS keeps the encoder running independently of your home computer, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube stream, an archive, policy approval, or monetization.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists encoder streaming as a supported method. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- A VPS with enough CPU capacity to encode your chosen video and enough sustained upload bandwidth for the stream. YouTube does not specify a VPS provider or plan in its encoder guidance, and no universal minimum VPS specification is established here.
- A fan-noise audio recording and visual loop that you own or have permission to use worldwide. YouTube places responsibility for rights clearance on the content provider. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service.
- An encoder workflow. Headless FFmpeg is suited to looping files on a VPS without a desktop; OBS offers GUI-based scene management but typically requires a graphical session. YouTube supports encoder streaming generally; a community example demonstrates FFmpeg and systemd on Ubuntu, but is not an official recipe or reliability guarantee. See the community FFmpeg/systemd example.
Prepare the fan-noise video and audio
Use a source file that plays continuously without abrupt silence, clicks, or unwanted gaps at the loop point. Test the beginning and end together: a long-running stream repeats that transition, so a small edit flaw can become conspicuous. If you generate audio or visuals, retain the project files and documentation showing what you made and which rights apply.
Choose a resolution and frame rate the VPS can encode consistently. More pixels and frames require more encoding capacity and outgoing bandwidth; select a sustainable profile rather than assuming a rented server can handle any source. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for viewers, so send a stable stream and check the platform’s stream-health messages rather than relying on how the local file looks.
Configure the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Follow its current stream setup flow, select encoder streaming, and create or select the broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder setup. Treat the key like a password: store it in a protected environment variable or restricted configuration file, not in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection between your encoder and YouTube.
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. Use AAC or MP3 audio.
- Start with a profile the VPS can sustain, then run a representative test with the actual fan noise and video motion. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while checking CPU use and the VPS network for sustained overload or interruptions.
Exact bitrate and resolution depend on the selected output profile and what the VPS can reliably encode and upload. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the profile you choose rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every resolution and frame rate: YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

Run FFmpeg unattended on the VPS
A headless FFmpeg process can read local media, loop it, and send the encoded output to YouTube. The exact command depends on your source files, installed FFmpeg build, desired profile, and the stream URL and key YouTube provides. Keep credentials out of the command if your shell history or process listings are accessible to other users. The community Ubuntu example pairs FFmpeg with systemd so a service can restart after a reboot or process failure; treat it as a pattern to adapt and test, not as a verified turnkey configuration.
A process supervisor can restart a crashed encoder, but that is not the same as detecting every frozen feed, confirming YouTube is receiving healthy video, or guaranteeing successful reconnection. Arrange a way to inspect service status and YouTube stream health, and decide who will respond if either reports a problem. Validate reboot behavior and a deliberate encoder restart before relying on unattended operation.

Rights, live interruptions, and monetization
Copyright checks can interrupt a live feed
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the image with a placeholder, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. Even licensed material may need the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Use original or properly cleared fan-noise audio and visuals, and resolve any required allowlisting before going live. Read YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright checks.
A 24/7 loop is not assured monetizable content
YouTube applies its channel monetization policies to live streams. Content that is repetitive, mass-produced, generic, or reused may not qualify. A loop can be technically streamable without meeting monetization requirements; superficial edits alone do not establish originality or eligibility. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

YouTube’s live monetization options include ads and, for eligible creators, fan-funding features. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. YouTube reported that channels enabling automatic live mid-rolls had an average in-stream ad revenue per hour more than 20% higher than channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported comparison for those channels and that period, not a forecast for an individual ASMR channel or evidence that repetitive content will pass monetization review. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
Plan for restarts and the archive limit
A continuous broadcast may stay live beyond the duration YouTube can reliably archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, record an independent copy and consider shorter broadcast sessions, accounting for the operational and viewer-experience effects of restarting. Check YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

A VPS and supervisor reduce dependence on a home computer, but continuity still depends on the host, its network, the encoder process, and YouTube ingest. No uptime guarantee or VPS specification follows from the FFmpeg/systemd example. Test recovery procedures and keep an independent recording if losing a session would matter.

Troubleshooting common failures
- You cannot start a live stream: confirm the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; then review the current Live Control Room setup flow.
- YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: check the selected stream URL and key, encoder output, VPS CPU and sustained upload, and the profile’s CBR and keyframe settings. Test again with a profile the VPS can maintain.
- The feed stops after a process crash: check the encoder service and its logs, then verify whether the supervisor restarted it and whether YouTube received the reconnection. A process restart alone cannot detect every stalled feed.
- The picture is replaced or the stream is interrupted: check for a Content ID match or other copyright notice in YouTube Studio. Remove or replace disputed material, or resolve rights-owner allowlisting where applicable.
- The replay is missing: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use your independent recording rather than assuming YouTube will archive a continuous broadcast.
- The channel is not monetizing the loop: review YouTube’s monetization policies and eligibility notices. A technically live or repetitive broadcast is not automatically eligible for monetization.
