How to Set Up a Custom Domain for a Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use your own domain for a live stream, first decide whether it is for viewers to open or for your encoder to send video to. Those are different jobs: register the hostname with a platform that supports the feature, add the exact DNS records it supplies, complete verification and HTTPS setup, then test the intended page or ingest path. A CNAME target for one service is not a general-purpose live-stream address.

Choose what the custom domain should do

A custom domain is only a hostname. It does not create a viewer page, player, or streaming endpoint by itself. Start by identifying the function you need, because the platform, DNS records, and test will differ.

Viewer-facing page or playback address

Names such as live.example.com or watch.example.com can give viewers a branded URL, if your streaming service supports a hosted live page or custom playback hostname. OneStream Live documents custom domains for its hosted live pages; Vimeo OTT documents setting a custom primary domain or subdomain for its OTT service. Check that the plan and feature you intend to use support custom domains before changing DNS.

Encoder ingest hostname

An ingest hostname is the destination your encoder sends video to. Use a separate name, such as ingest.example.com, only when the streaming platform explicitly supports custom ingest domains. Cloudflare Stream, for example, documents custom RTMPS ingest domains. A viewer-facing page domain cannot be assumed to work as an ingest endpoint, or vice versa.

What you need before changing DNS

  • A domain you control and access to its DNS management panel. DNS interfaces vary: a record’s name field might expect the full hostname or only its subdomain label.
  • A streaming platform that supports the particular custom-domain function you need.
  • The platform’s exact DNS and verification instructions, including any proxy or certificate requirements.
  • The current record values for the hostname and any services already depending on it. Avoid deleting records or changing an apex domain’s routing without understanding the impact.

A domain registrar and a DNS host are not necessarily the same company. Vimeo OTT’s guidance names GoDaddy, Namecheap, and DNSimple as examples of registrars; use the DNS panel authoritative for your domain rather than assuming the registrar hosts its DNS.

Set up the domain in the right order

  1. Choose a hostname. For a viewer page, choose a clear subdomain such as live.example.com. For ingest, choose a different subdomain if the platform recommends one. Confirm the feature is supported before proceeding.
  2. Add the hostname in the streaming platform first. Use its dashboard or support process to register the hostname. The service may provide a CNAME target, a TXT ownership record, certificate instructions, or more than one of these. Keep this separate from entering records at your DNS host: the platform defines the values it needs. api.video, for example, documents custom domains for live streams and video delivery with DNS updates, domain provisioning, and TLS certificates as requirements.
  3. Enter only the requested DNS records. In your DNS panel, create or update the record exactly as specified, including the record type, name, target, and proxy setting. The platform’s instructions take precedence over generic DNS advice. Do not copy another provider’s target or modify unrelated records.
  4. Complete ownership verification. If the service asks for a TXT record or another proof of control, add it exactly as instructed and use the platform’s verification control or status page. Routing a hostname and proving you own it can be separate steps.
  5. Wait for DNS and HTTPS readiness. Follow the service’s status rather than assuming the hostname is ready as soon as a record is saved. The provider may need to validate DNS and provision a TLS certificate before the domain works securely.
  6. Test the feature you configured. For a viewer URL, open the exact address over HTTPS and check that the expected page or player appears. For ingest, wait until the platform reports the hostname configured, then copy its precise secure ingest URL into the encoder’s server or URL field and check the platform’s stream status.

Provider-specific DNS examples

These are examples of distinct platform features, not interchangeable CNAME targets. Follow the live instructions in the service dashboard in case its workflow changes.

Service and purpose Documented DNS or setup detail Important qualification
Cloudflare Stream custom ingest A CNAME points to live.cloudflare.com. When Cloudflare provides DNS, the record is added automatically. Cloudflare’s instructions say a Cloudflare-managed ingest hostname should be DNS-only (grey-clouded). This applies to its documented ingest setup, not every custom domain.
OneStream Live hosted page A CNAME targets hostedpage.onestream.live, followed by subdomain verification in OneStream. The help article says to disable proxying when the DNS provider offers a proxy option. The DNS name field may take either the full hostname or just its leading label, depending on the registrar.

Cloudflare’s custom-ingest developer page showed an update date of April 21, 2026; OneStream’s help article showed an update date of March 5, 2025. Their target names and proxy guidance belong to those services and workflows only.

Verification, certificates, proxying, and timing

DNS routing is not the same as ownership verification

A CNAME or other routing record directs traffic; a TXT record may separately prove control of the domain. Firebase Hosting’s custom-domain workflow illustrates the distinction by treating an ownership TXT record, DNS routing, and certificate provisioning as separate steps. It is useful background, but not a replacement for the live-stream provider’s own process.

HTTPS must be ready before you rely on the URL

For a viewer-facing page, confirm the provider reports the hostname and certificate ready before sharing it. For a cloud delivery setup, AWS documents a workflow involving a certificate request, adding the hostname as an alternate CloudFront domain, and routing DNS to the distribution. A managed streaming service may automate certificates or use a different process; do not import AWS steps unless AWS is the service you are configuring.

Proxy settings are provider-specific

A DNS proxy can affect whether a streaming provider can validate or use a hostname. Cloudflare’s custom-ingest documentation calls for DNS-only mode for the stated Cloudflare-managed ingest hostname, while OneStream’s hosted-page instructions say to disable proxying when available. Neither statement establishes a universal rule. Apply the setting the selected platform specifies.

Allow for provider-specific validation time

OneStream says its verification may take seconds to a few hours. Firebase says some DNS or TLS steps in its custom-domain workflow may take up to 24 hours. These are estimates for those providers, not a guarantee for any streaming platform; check your provider’s status and instructions.

Test the viewer page or encoder path

For a viewer-facing URL

  • Open the exact hostname over HTTPS, not just the provider’s default URL.
  • Confirm the intended hosted page or player loads and that the stream is available there.
  • If the hostname resolves but the browser reports a certificate warning or the page is missing, check the provider’s readiness status before altering records again.

For an ingest hostname

  • Use the exact RTMPS or other secure ingest URL supplied by the streaming platform; a CNAME alone does not tell an encoder what protocol, path, or stream key to use.
  • Change the encoder’s server or URL only after the platform reports the custom hostname configured.
  • Start a test stream and check the receiving platform’s live status. Cloudflare describes secure RTMPS and SRT ingestion; custom ingest support must be provided by the platform and is not created by pointing any arbitrary hostname at a service.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The platform cannot verify the hostname The record is missing, entered under the wrong name, points to the wrong target, or DNS has not updated. Compare the record type, name, and target character for character with the platform’s instructions. Check whether your DNS panel expects a full hostname or only the subdomain label, then wait for the provider’s validation status.
The DNS record looks correct, but the platform reports a proxy error The provider requires a DNS-only record or otherwise has a proxy compatibility requirement. Use the service-specific proxy instructions. Do not assume proxying should always be on or always be off.
The hostname resolves, but HTTPS is unavailable Certificate issuance or validation is incomplete, or a required DNS/ownership step remains. Check the streaming service’s certificate and domain status; verify any requested ownership record and routing record. Wait for its documented readiness state.
The branded page opens, but the stream does not play The hostname may be configured for a page but not for the playback path, or the stream itself may not be available. Confirm the service supports the intended viewer or playback feature and check the stream’s status in that service.
The encoder cannot connect using the new hostname The hostname may not be an ingest endpoint, may not be ready, or the encoder’s URL/protocol may be wrong. Use the platform’s exact secure ingest URL and required stream key after its dashboard shows the custom ingest hostname configured. Do not substitute a hosted-page URL.
An existing site or service stops working after the change An existing DNS record was replaced, or an apex/domain-level route was changed without accounting for its other uses. Review the prior DNS configuration and restore or adjust only the affected record. Ask the DNS host or streaming provider for help if you cannot identify dependencies.

Or let it run in the cloud

A custom domain changes how viewers reach a page or how an encoder reaches an ingest endpoint; it does not by itself keep a broadcast running. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based broadcasting. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
