CBR vs VBR

CBR vs VBR for a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Playlist

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use CBR for a pre-recorded playlist sent to YouTube Live through an encoder. YouTube’s published Live encoder settings specify constant bitrate (CBR). Its separate recommendation for variable bitrate (VBR) applies to uploading a finished video file, not to a live encoder feed. The fact that the source video was recorded in advance does not change which delivery path you are using.

CBR or VBR: which setting belongs to your workflow?

How the video reaches YouTube YouTube’s published bitrate-mode guidance What to select
An encoder sends a live feed to YouTube Live, even when that feed plays a prerecorded playlist CBR (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions) Set the encoder’s bitrate mode to CBR.
You upload a completed video file through YouTube’s upload workflow VBR (YouTube Help: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings) Use the upload recommendations for the file; do not use them as a substitute for Live ingest settings.

CBR aims to keep the encoded stream’s bitrate steady over time; VBR varies it with the content’s complexity. The relevant setting depends on how you deliver the video, not whether its source was recorded beforehand. YouTube documents CBR for Live ingest and VBR for uploaded files. It does not publish a controlled comparison establishing that one mode always gives better picture quality or bandwidth use across encoders and prerecorded-playlist setups.

Choose a Live bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate

CBR is a bitrate mode, not a bitrate value. Select the YouTube Live recommendation that matches the video codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. The figures below are YouTube-published H.264 recommendations, not independent measurements or guarantees of a particular viewer experience. YouTube’s settings can change, so check its current Live encoder settings page when configuring a stream.

H.264 ingest resolution and frame rate YouTube-published recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

For other combinations, and for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, use the corresponding codec, resolution, and frame-rate row on YouTube’s Live settings page rather than assuming the H.264 figures apply. YouTube’s Live ingest supports RTMP or RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; the cited settings page specifies frame rates up to 60 fps.

Set up and test the encoder

  1. Choose the output format. Set the encoder to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send. Find that exact combination in YouTube’s Live bitrate guidance.
  2. Set bitrate mode to CBR. Enter the recommended bitrate for that Live ingest format. Do not substitute the VBR guidance for uploading a completed video.
  3. Set the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds. Set the encoder accordingly.
  4. Check audio settings. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio options, with some codec-specific limitations. Confirm that the audio format you choose is supported by your encoder and the selected Live configuration.
  5. Check outbound capacity. YouTube advises that total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% spare. The connection must sustain the stream’s total outbound bitrate, including audio, with that headroom.
  6. Run a test and watch stream health. Start the encoder before relying on a long-running playlist. Check YouTube’s stream health and correct warnings or instability before treating the setup as ready.

YouTube says it automatically transcodes Live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That happens after ingest; it does not change the encoder’s bitrate-mode recommendation.

Choose how to run the prerecorded playlist

You can send a playlist through software on a computer, a standalone hardware encoder, or a cloud workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes software and standalone hardware encoders and lists a cloud service for continuous prerecorded streaming; these are workflow options, not prerequisites for selecting CBR. For any encoder sending a Live feed, use the Live settings above.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The encoder is set to VBR because you followed YouTube’s upload advice. Confirm that the workflow is an encoder feed to Live, not a file upload. For Live ingest, use CBR; VBR belongs to YouTube’s separate uploaded-file recommendations.
  • The stream is unstable or YouTube reports health problems. Check the actual outbound bitrate against available upload bandwidth, preserve the recommended 20% headroom, and verify the encoder’s bitrate and network stability. Retest before relying on the playlist.
  • The video format or quality does not match the planned setting. Verify codec, resolution, and frame rate in the encoder, then select the matching row in YouTube’s Live bitrate table. Recommendations differ by codec and format.
  • Keyframe-related warnings appear. Set a two-second keyframe interval where possible and ensure it does not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio is missing or incompatible. Check the selected audio codec against YouTube’s supported AAC or MP3 options and any codec-specific limitations shown in its Live settings.
