For Tamil subtitles that every viewer can see in an OBS YouTube stream, render the subtitles into a copy of the video first, then play that copy in OBS as a Media Source. If your video already contains a Tamil subtitle track, OBS’s VLC Video source may display it. Uploading an .srt file to YouTube Studio is a separate option for selectable watch-page captions; it does not guarantee that subtitles appear in the live OBS picture.
Choose how the Tamil text should appear
| Method | Visible in the OBS stream picture? | Can viewers turn it off? | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Render subtitles into the video before OBS | Yes. The text becomes part of the picture. | No | A consistent overlay that every viewer sees |
| Use an embedded subtitle track with OBS VLC Video | Intended to show the selected track; confirm with your actual file | No separate viewer toggle for the OBS composite | A video that already has a compatible embedded Tamil track |
| Upload subtitles in YouTube Studio | Not established as part of OBS live output | YouTube captions are viewer-selectable on the video | Captions attached to a regular YouTube video |
Most reliable method: render Tamil subtitles into the video
Rendering, also called burning in, places the Tamil text directly on the image. It is the clearest choice when the text must appear in the stream itself, regardless of viewer caption settings.
- Prepare the subtitle text and timing. Use a subtitle file or your editing software’s subtitle tools. Check that each line matches the spoken content and remains on screen for the intended duration.
- Open the video in a video editor. Add the Tamil subtitles as a subtitle or text layer, then render/export a new video with the text composited into the picture. Export settings depend on your editor and source; there is no single OBS setting that burns subtitles into a file.
- Review the rendered copy. Check Tamil glyphs, line breaks, timing, contrast against bright and dark scenes, and safe margins so text is not cut off at the edge. If characters appear as boxes or incorrectly shaped, address font or text-rendering support in the editing workflow before streaming.
- Add the copy to OBS. In the scene, use Sources > + > Media Source, select the rendered file, and configure playback as needed. OBS’s documented Media Source properties include file selection and looping, but do not document a selector for an external .srt sidecar file. Do not assume that placing an .srt beside the video will display it.
- Test the complete output. Preview the scene and make a short OBS recording. Verify subtitle placement, synchronization, and legibility in the recording before starting the YouTube broadcast.
Use a subtitle track already embedded in the video
If the file contains a Tamil subtitle track, OBS’s VLC Video source offers controls for enabling subtitles and choosing a track. The result depends on whether VLC and the source can read the file’s container and subtitle format, and whether Tamil characters render correctly on your system.
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC source guide says VLC and OBS bitness must match; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source from Sources > +, then select the media file or playlist.
- In the source properties, enable Subtitles Enabled and choose the intended Subtitle Track.
- Check the actual file in the OBS preview and in a short recording. Confirm Tamil glyphs, timing, and placement before going live. The source documentation does not promise compatibility with every container, subtitle codec, or font setup.
Add selectable Tamil captions to a YouTube video
YouTube Studio provides a separate subtitle workflow for YouTube videos. You can upload a timed subtitle file, use auto-sync, or enter subtitles manually. YouTube lists SubRip (.srt) as a basic supported format when it is plain UTF-8 text. The file needs subtitle text and timing.

- Open the video in YouTube Studio and go to Subtitles.
- Choose Tamil and add subtitles by uploading a timed file, using auto-sync, or entering them manually.
- If uploading .srt, use plain UTF-8 and review the resulting timing and text in YouTube’s caption workflow.
This attaches captions to the YouTube video for viewers to select; it is not evidence that YouTube Studio captions will be composited into the picture sent from OBS during a live stream. YouTube describes subtitles and captions as a way to reach viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing and viewers who speak another language.
Can YouTube automatically caption Tamil during a live stream?
YouTube’s help information lists Tamil among languages available for automatic captions on long-form videos, but says live automatic captions are English-only. For long-form automatic captions, review the generated text: YouTube notes that pronunciation, accent, dialect, and background noise can cause errors.

YouTube documents a separate live-caption path: captions must either be embedded in the video as supported 608/708 captions or sent using supported caption software over HTTP. This is distinct from uploading an ordinary .srt subtitle file in YouTube Studio.
Check these points before you go live
- Decide whether captions must be visible to everyone. Burned-in text is part of the picture; YouTube captions are selectable.
- Verify Tamil rendering. Review the actual OBS preview and a recording rather than assuming that a file or track will render identically on every system.
- Check synchronization and safe margins. Watch the beginning, middle, and end of the video, including scene changes and any longer gaps in dialogue.
- Use a short test recording. A successful source preview alone may not reveal all playback or output issues.
- Confirm you have rights to the video and subtitle material. Adding subtitles does not grant permission to stream copyrighted video, music, or translations. Follow YouTube’s copyright rules and applicable permissions.
Troubleshooting
The .srt file does not show in Media Source
OBS’s documented Media Source controls do not include an external subtitle-file selector. Render the subtitles into a video copy, or use VLC Video with a compatible embedded subtitle track.

VLC Video shows no subtitles
Confirm the file has an embedded track, enable Subtitles Enabled, and select the correct Subtitle Track. Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS bitness. If the track still does not appear, compatibility with that file’s container or subtitle format may be the issue; render subtitles into the picture as a more predictable alternative.
Tamil letters appear as boxes or incorrectly
The reviewed OBS source documentation does not establish Tamil font fallback behavior across operating systems. Check the same file in the OBS preview and a recording. If the embedded track does not render correctly, render the Tamil text into the video using an editing workflow that displays it correctly.

Captions appear on a YouTube video but not in the OBS stream image
YouTube Studio subtitles and the OBS program picture are separate paths. Use a rendered video copy or a subtitle track displayed by VLC Video when the text must be visible in the live picture.
