How to Fix an FFmpeg YouTube Livestream With Audio but No Video

Find where video disappears in an FFmpeg YouTube livestream: verify the source, mappings, encoder output, YouTube preview, and connection.

If your YouTube livestream has audio but no picture, first check whether FFmpeg receives video at all. Then inspect the output’s -map and -vn options, compare a local output with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and use stream-health messages to narrow down an ingest or encoder problem. Without your command and logs, there is no single confirmed cause—but this sequence identifies where the video disappears.

1. Check whether FFmpeg receives video

Read the input section near the start of FFmpeg’s console output. It should list a video stream as well as any audio stream. If only audio appears, YouTube cannot display video that FFmpeg never received; investigate the input URL, source selection, camera or capture configuration, or upstream feed before changing output settings.

When possible, check the source independently and make a short local recording or use the encoder’s preview. YouTube recommends checking the picture and sound directly in the encoder and looking for problems in a local archive (YouTube livestream troubleshooting; YouTube livestream setup).

2. Inspect stream mapping and video suppression

Review the output options in your FFmpeg command, especially every -map and -vn. FFmpeg’s -map selects which input streams go into an output. Once you specify manual mappings for an output, automatic stream selection is disabled for that output; -vn explicitly excludes video. See the FFmpeg documentation on stream selection.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • A mapping such as -map 0:a selects audio streams only. If the input has video, include the intended video stream too.
  • If video is produced by a complex filtergraph, ensure its labeled output is mapped to the output exactly once.
  • Remove or correct -vn if the output is supposed to contain video.

Do not blindly add -map 0:v:0: the correct input index and stream layout depend on your source and filtergraph. Confirm them from the input listing and command first.

3. Check encoding and YouTube’s ingest requirements

If FFmpeg receives video and the output is mapped correctly, compare the outgoing settings with YouTube’s current guidance for your ingest method. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends CBR bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a keyframe every 2 seconds (not more than 4 seconds). Its advanced recommendations include square pixels and progressive scan. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and the applicable options for your protocol; codec availability also depends on how your FFmpeg build was compiled.

Check Live Control Room for warnings about unsupported codec/audio combinations or incorrect video settings. Do not assume that every codec listed by YouTube is available in your FFmpeg build or valid for every protocol and ingest mode; use the settings applicable to your setup and the errors YouTube actually reports (encoder settings; YouTube streaming errors).

4. Compare the local output with YouTube’s preview

Before a public event, test with an unlisted stream or Live Control Room preview. If a local recording or preview of FFmpeg’s output contains video but YouTube’s preview does not, concentrate on output muxing, protocol and ingest settings, and Live Control Room health messages. If both lack video, return to the source, mapping, and encoding checks.

YouTube advises waiting for the preview to appear before selecting Go live, then monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube livestream setup; YouTube streaming tips).

5. Check encoder load and outbound connection

If the encoder’s output looks correct but the remote preview is missing or unstable, review FFmpeg’s logs, CPU load, and outbound connection. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU usage, and testing the outbound connection; if that test reveals a connection problem, contact your internet provider. Its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available as headroom. That is a planning recommendation, not proof that bandwidth is the cause of a black picture (troubleshooting; streaming tips).

6. Verify the destination and stream key

Confirm that the destination server URL and stream key in FFmpeg match the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then wait for YouTube’s preview. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion. Treat the stream key like a password: redact it from logs or command lines before sharing them for help (YouTube livestream setup; encoder settings).

Common symptoms and what to check

What you find Where to investigate
No video stream in FFmpeg’s input listing Input source, URL, source selection, or capture configuration.
Input has video, but output mapping selects audio only Output-specific -map options and filtergraph outputs.
-vn appears on the output Remove it if that output is meant to carry video.
Local output has video, YouTube preview does not Ingest protocol and settings, muxing, destination details, and Live Control Room warnings.
Encoder output or preview is unstable, with high CPU or connection errors Encoder load and outbound network capacity; test the connection and leave bandwidth headroom.

What to include when asking for help

To identify the specific failure point, share the full FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, the input stream listing, relevant output logs, your FFmpeg version, and whether a local output and the Live Control Room preview show video. These details distinguish a missing source from a mapping, encoding, ingest, or connection issue.
