YouTube’s workflow uses an encoder, a server URL and a private stream key. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station broadcast feature is for camera video; it does not establish a built-in way to send an internet radio stream to YouTube.
The exact NAS setup depends on your Synology model, DSM version, the station’s stream format and an encoder compatible with all three. The steps below cover the supported YouTube workflow and what to verify before choosing or configuring NAS software; they do not assume a particular NAS command or package has been tested.
Before you start: confirm the source and the rights
Check that an encoder can read the station stream
Get the station’s actual stream URL and format, then check that the encoder you plan to run on the NAS can ingest it. A station’s public listening page is not necessarily the same thing as a directly usable stream URL. Confirm the details with the station if they are not clear. The station, format and NAS model are unspecified here, so there is no safe universal command or package to provide.
Get permission to rebroadcast
Being able to listen to a station does not mean you may retransmit it. YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use on Google services, including applicable music rights and approvals: YouTube livestream terms. Confirm that your permission covers a YouTube simulcast and the relevant territories before going live.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder. YouTube describes the key as a credential that lets the encoder send content to your channel, so keep it private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Use the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; use the endpoint and key provided for your stream rather than substituting a guessed URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Choose and configure an encoder for the NAS
First verify that the encoder can run on your specific NAS and DSM version, ingest the station’s stream format, and send the output to YouTube over RTMPS if available. It may also need to create a video stream: the YouTube encoder guidance lists video settings, and the radio audio alone may not satisfy the workflow you choose. The cited Synology documentation does not prescribe a visual, encoder package or NAS command for radio.
For the encoder output, YouTube’s published guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and 44.1 kHz for stereo. Match the encoder’s output to those recommendations where applicable; do not guess a bitrate or resolution without checking the current YouTube settings and the encoder’s capabilities. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Synology’s Surveillance Station Live Broadcast documentation describes sending a selected camera stream to YouTube using an RTMP path and key, and specifies H.264 video. It is labeled for Surveillance Station version 8 and documents camera video—not an internet radio URL or an audio-only broadcast. Do not treat it as proof that Surveillance Station can relay a radio station.

- It runs on your NAS model and DSM version, with enough capacity for continuous encoding.
- It can ingest the station’s actual stream URL and format.
- It can produce the audio and any video format required by your chosen YouTube workflow.
- It supports the YouTube server URL and stream key, preferably over RTMPS.
- You understand how it behaves if the station feed, NAS or network connection drops, and whether it can recover without manual intervention.
- You are prepared to maintain the setup, including updates and checking that the stream remains active.
A software encoder running on a compatible NAS is a possible approach, but a current model-specific package, Container Manager configuration, exact command line and continuous-recovery behavior are not established here. To work out those specifics, you need at least the NAS model, DSM version, source stream format and intended encoder.
Start the encoder and verify the live feed
- Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder, along with the output settings you have verified.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that audio is present and, if your workflow includes video, that the image is appearing as intended.
- Start or promote the broadcast only after the preview and status show that the encoder is reaching YouTube as expected. Keep an eye on the stream while it is live, especially when first using the setup.
- When finished, stop the encoder. YouTube says stopping the encoder ends transmission; streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Copyright can interrupt an otherwise working stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license alone may not prevent that interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, even when you have licensed the material. Resolve this with the rights holder before broadcasting. Read YouTube’s live copyright guidance.

Troubleshooting: isolate the failing part
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot open the station feed. | Whether you have the direct stream URL, whether it is reachable from the NAS, and whether the encoder supports its format. | Ask the station for the correct feed details and verify encoder compatibility before changing YouTube settings. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview. | Whether the encoder is running and whether the server URL and stream key match the stream in Live Control Room. | Copy the current values from that stream again and check the encoder’s connection status. Keep the key private. |
| The connection reaches YouTube but the audio or video is missing. | The encoder’s output and whether it matches YouTube’s listed audio/video formats and the visual requirements of your workflow. | Check the output configuration against YouTube’s encoder settings; do not assume a camera-broadcast feature will accept radio audio. |
| The live broadcast is interrupted after it starts. | Whether the station feed, NAS or network connection dropped, and whether YouTube detected third-party content. | Check encoder and feed status first. For a content match, consult the rights holder and confirm any required Content ID allowlisting. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. It does not ingest a live internet radio station URL or broadcast from a camera, so it is not a direct substitute for relaying a station’s live feed. If you have a recording you have permission to use, it can loop that uploaded video while your computer is off. See StreamNeo.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
