Start by checking Wirecast’s Live Broadcast Area. If the overlay is already missing there after a playlist switch, check which shot or layer contains it: a graphic attached to one video shot may disappear when Wirecast switches to another. For a logo or lower third that should persist across clips, put it on a separate Main Shot Display layer above the video layer. This is a likely troubleshooting path, not a confirmed diagnosis of your project.
First determine where the overlay disappears
- Look at Wirecast’s Live Broadcast Area after the switch. If the overlay is missing in Wirecast Live, investigate the shot and layer arrangement first.
- Compare it with the stream received by YouTube. If Wirecast Live still shows the overlay but YouTube does not, investigate the output or connection path separately. The available documentation does not establish a specific YouTube-side cause for this symptom.
This comparison separates a composition problem inside Wirecast from a problem that may occur after Wirecast produces its live output.
Why a playlist switch can remove a graphic
Telestream’s Wirecast 16.3 Windows User Guide describes switching to a playlist as the same as switching to any other shot. A graphic placed in a video shot’s Shot Layers is part of that shot’s contained composite. When the playlist advances to a different shot, the first shot’s contained graphic may no longer be visible. Telestream’s layer guidance explains that Shot Layers appear with their associated shot, while Main Shot Display layers let you composite elements independently.
When multiple shots are live across layers, Wirecast combines them in the Live Broadcast Area; the guide describes layer 1 as the top layer and layer 5 as the bottom. A graphic can therefore be live but hidden if it is below an opaque video layer.

Choose the layer arrangement that matches the graphic

Telestream summarizes the distinction this way: “Main Shot Display layers allow you to composite elements on the fly by turning them on and off independently, while Shot Layers let you build a contained composite that appears every time you trigger a single shot.”
Check the live state and layer order
- Identify the overlay’s current home. In the Wirecast shot/layer controls, determine whether the graphic is within the playlist video shot’s Shot Layers or on its own Main Shot Display layer.
- Move persistent graphics to an independent layer. Place the logo or lower third on a Main Shot Display layer above the video layer. Leave it in Shot Layers if it should appear only with that particular shot.
- Confirm what is actually live. With AutoLive enabled, selecting a shot sends it to the Live Broadcast Area. With AutoLive disabled, select the intended shot or layered combination in Preview and click Go. A graphic visible only in Preview is not confirmation that it is on the broadcast output.
- After advancing the playlist, verify both state and stacking. Confirm the overlay’s layer remains live and is above the video. If it is live but obscured, correct the layer order; if it is no longer live, use an independent layer for graphics that should persist.
These labels and controls are documented in Telestream’s Wirecast 16.3 Windows guide; controls can differ by Wirecast release and operating system, so check the version installed on your system.

Run a controlled test before going live
- Open the same Wirecast project you plan to use.
- Check the overlay in the Live Broadcast Area before switching.
- Advance between two playlist clips and watch whether the graphic disappears in Wirecast Live.
- If it disappears there, adjust the shot/layer assignment and repeat the switch. If it remains in Wirecast Live but is absent from the YouTube stream, investigate output and connection behavior separately.
This is a diagnostic procedure you can perform with your project; it is not a reported test result.
If the graphic comes from Singular.live
If you are using Singular.live as the graphics source, its Wirecast integration guidance adds two checks: make sure the overlay has been taken on-air and make sure its Wirecast layer is above the video layers. These checks apply to a Singular.live source, not necessarily to other overlay tools.

Keep the YouTube output path in perspective
YouTube Help describes an encoder as the application that sends the live output and instructs users to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into it. That context does not tie webcams, microphones, or headsets to an overlay disappearing during a playlist switch. If Wirecast’s Live Broadcast Area is correct but YouTube’s received stream is not, check the output path without assuming that changing capture hardware will fix the composition.
