Windows can automatically open your streaming app when you sign in after a restart, but that does not guarantee the app will resume the meditation stream that was playing before Windows shut down. Turn on the app’s startup setting, then test whether your chosen service restores playback; if it opens paused, press Play.
Set Windows to open the streaming app at sign-in
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft documents two ways to enable startup for an app that appears in Windows’ startup list: Settings or Task Manager. The controls launch the app when you sign in; they do not promise to restore its previous playback state. See Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions.
- Using Settings: Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, then turn on the toggle beside your streaming app if it is listed.
- Using Task Manager: Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, choose the app, and select Enable.
Microsoft describes the Settings toggle this way: “Set the toggle to On to start the app automatically when you sign in.” In other words, the expected result is that the app opens after sign-in, not necessarily that audio starts.
If the app is missing from the startup list
Microsoft’s alternative is to add the app’s shortcut to a Startup folder. Press Windows key + R, enter shell:startup, and press Enter to open the current user’s Startup folder. Place a shortcut to the app there. To use the all-users Startup folder instead, open the Run dialog and enter shell:common startup; administrator permission may be required. For Spotify desktop, enable its sign-in option
Spotify desktop has its own setting for opening at computer sign-in. Open Spotify, select your profile menu, choose Settings, scroll to Startup and window behaviour, and set Open Spotify as soon as you log into the computer to Yes. Spotify Community help content describing this option was last updated June 25, 2026; it documents opening Spotify, not resuming the last audio stream. See Spotify’s desktop startup instructions.
Check whether playback actually resumes
After enabling startup, save your work and perform a normal Windows restart. Sign in and check the result:

- The app opens and the meditation plays: Your service is restoring playback in your setup. The Windows startup setting ensures the app opens; test again after app or Windows updates if reliable playback matters to your routine.
- The app opens but playback is paused: The startup setting has opened the app, but it has not resumed audio. Start the stream manually. The cited Windows and Spotify startup instructions do not establish a setting that automatically restores the stream after a restart.
- The app does not open: Recheck that its startup toggle is enabled, confirm you signed in to the Windows account where you configured it, and try the Startup-folder shortcut if the app is not listed.
Keep the distinction clear: launching an app at sign-in and recovering its previous playback state are separate behaviors. Whether the second happens depends on the streaming service and app; the documented startup controls do not promise it.

Spotify’s Autoplay setting is under profile menu > Settings > Autoplay on desktop. Spotify describes it as playing similar songs when an album, playlist, or selection ends; it is not a restart-resume feature. For a planned listening session, Microsoft documents linking Spotify and choosing a playlist or podcast in Windows Clock Focus sessions, but that flow does not promise restart recovery.

If you listen in a browser
Spotify’s web player supports current desktop versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari. Spotify suggests trying its desktop app if the web player is not working. Its browser guidance does not claim that playback state survives a Windows restart. See Spotify web player help.
Troubleshoot the specific failure
Windows starts, but the streaming app is absent
- Check Start > Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager’s Startup apps list and enable the app.
- If the app is not listed, add its shortcut to
shell:startupfor your account orshell:common startupfor all users.
The app opens, but the meditation is paused
This is the key limitation: app launch does not itself restore playback. Start the stream manually and check the app’s own help for a playback-resume option specific to your service. Do not treat Spotify Autoplay as a fix; it applies when a selection ends.

Audio starts after waking from sleep or reconnecting Bluetooth
A Microsoft Learn Q&A includes an individual user report of Spotify restarting after Windows woke and connected to Bluetooth audio devices.
