You can loop a prerecorded pranayama lesson on YouTube Live from a Linux server with FFmpeg: create a YouTube event, copy its stream URL and key, then have FFmpeg read the video in real time and send it over RTMPS. Test the feed in Live Control Room before making the event public. The command below is an adaptable starting point, not a verified fit for every file or server.
Before you start
You need a Linux server with FFmpeg installed, a video and audio file you have the rights to stream, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check that the lesson plays correctly from start to finish and that its audio level is suitable. If the ending cuts abruptly into the opening, edit a loop-friendly master; FFmpeg repeats the file but does not make the transition seamless.
There is no pranayama-specific video profile in YouTube’s encoder guidance. Choose landscape, portrait, or another format for the way viewers will watch, then ensure your output resolution, frame rate, audio, and bitrate are compatible with both the source and your server’s sustained upload capacity.
Create a YouTube Live event and get its stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Schedule an event if you want viewers to see an upcoming stream and set a reminder, or create the stream when you are ready.
- Choose the event’s visibility deliberately: public, private, or unlisted. YouTube notes that defaults may depend on the user’s age.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for this event. These are account- and event-specific. YouTube describes the key as functioning like a password and address, so do not put it in public scripts, issue reports, or screenshots.
- For encrypted transport, click the lock icon in the Stream URL field and copy the RTMPS URL shown there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the current URL shown in your account rather than assuming a server address.
If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. Treat the URL and key as credentials wherever you store or run the command.

Choose output settings that fit the lesson and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and a keyframe about every two seconds, not more than four seconds apart. For H.264, the recommended bitrate is 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Those are recommendations for the specified formats, not universal minimums; choose a setting your server can sustain reliably and test it.
| Output example | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | Keyframe guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | About every 2 seconds; no more than 4 seconds apart |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | About every 2 seconds; no more than 4 seconds apart |
The example below uses 720p30 assumptions. If your source or chosen output differs, adjust resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and GOP/keyframe settings together. A two-second GOP at 30 fps is 60 frames; at a different frame rate, calculate the corresponding frame count. Avoid choosing a bitrate merely because the source can be encoded at it: the server’s upload link must carry the stream continuously.

Configure FFmpeg to repeat and send the file
For a common MP4 with one video stream and one audio stream, this illustrative command reads the file in real time, loops it, encodes H.264 and AAC, and sends an FLV container to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint. Replace the endpoint and key with the values copied from Live Control Room; do not publish a real key.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lesson.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://<current-server-url>/<stream-key>'
This is a template, not a command verified against your media, FFmpeg build, or hosting provider. Inspect the file first, for example with ffprobe lesson.mp4, and adapt stream selection, scaling, frame rate, audio layout, and encoding where necessary. The example’s 6 Mbps video bitrate and 60-frame GOP assume 720p30 H.264. YouTube’s settings guidance—not the example—is authoritative for supported codecs, constant bitrate, keyframe timing, and resolution-specific recommendations.

FFmpeg option placement matters: -stream_loop is an input option and belongs before the corresponding -i. Confirm support on the installed build with ffmpeg -h full; the available option text can vary by build. If the input codecs and format are suitable, stream copying may reduce server load, but only use it after checking that the resulting output satisfies YouTube’s ingest requirements.
Optional: attempt recovery after a temporary network failure
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation demonstrates an RTMP recovery configuration using -f fifo -fifo_format flv, recovery enabled, and a one-second recovery wait. This adds complexity and is best-effort: it does not promise uninterrupted playback or recovery from every server, network, or YouTube failure. Check ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo on the installed build and test the exact setup in the hosting environment before relying on it.

Test the feed, then start the event
- Run a private or unlisted test before the public event. Use audio and video motion similar to the real lesson; a static test image may not reveal the same encoding or connection issues.
- Start FFmpeg and check the preview in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
- Listen and watch the preview, and, if practical, check playback on another device. Confirm that the image, audio, loop transition, and stream health look right.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear, then click Go live in Live Control Room. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder according to the encoder workflow.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer continuous broadcast, plan the event duration and archive expectations explicitly rather than assuming the same automatic-archive behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears | Incorrect stream URL or key, connection failure, or incompatible output | Copy the current URL and key from the event in Live Control Room; verify the RTMPS endpoint and inspect encoder errors. Check supported codecs and output settings. |
| Stream health reports instability or the stream drops | The server cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, or its network connection is interrupted | Test sustained upload with the encoder running and lower the output bitrate or resolution if needed. Test any FIFO recovery configuration separately; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. |
| The picture or audio is missing or wrong | The file has different stream layout, codecs, frame rate, or audio characteristics than the template assumes | Inspect the file with ffprobe, then set the appropriate input streams and output encoding. Confirm the preview and audio on a separate device. |
| The loop has a noticeable jump | The end and beginning of the source do not join smoothly | Edit a loop-friendly file with compatible ending and opening audio and visuals; repetition alone does not smooth the cut. |
| The scheduled event is not publicly visible | The event visibility or start state is not what you intended | Check the event’s visibility in Studio and, for scheduled streams, click Go live after the preview appears. |
