In FFmpeg, send the output to the URL-and-key format your build accepts; RTMPS requires TLS on port 443, and not every FFmpeg package supports it.
Where to find your YouTube RTMPS URL
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Select the Stream tab, or schedule a stream.
- In Stream settings, find the Stream URL field and use its lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; do not assume that is the secure address you need. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe this workflow.
- Copy the stream key shown for the same stream. Treat it as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it in an article, screenshot, command shared publicly, or log.
The endpoint and key are specific to the stream configuration; there is no universal YouTube URL-and-key pair to substitute. If you use an encoder that has separate fields, enter the RTMPS URL as the server URL and the matching key as the stream name/key.
Getting the endpoint through YouTube’s API
For an application managed through the YouTube Live Streaming API, the LiveStreams resource provides the connection information in cdn.ingestionInfo. Use rtmpsIngestionAddress for the primary secure endpoint. The resource also provides rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress for workflows that support redundant simultaneous ingest; a basic FFmpeg setup should start with the primary endpoint.
YouTube provides the stream name separately. Depending on the encoder interface, provide the URL and name in separate fields or use the documented combined form STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Check the interface’s requirements rather than appending the key twice or assuming every encoder handles it the same way. YouTube’s RTMPS delivery guidance covers the endpoint and connection arrangement.

Send a file to YouTube with FFmpeg
For a prerecorded input file, this is a general command pattern:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY'Replace INPUT with the file path, RTMPS_URL with the exact secure URL copied for the active stream, and STREAM_KEY with its matching key. These are placeholders, not a real endpoint or key. The command illustrates one common URL-plus-key form; a particular FFmpeg build or workflow may require another arrangement. Avoid putting a real key in shell history or in a command copied to a public log.

-repaces file input in real time; it is commonly used for this purpose, not a YouTube requirement.-i INPUTselects the input. For a camera or other live capture source, use the appropriate input format and device options for your operating system and verify its available codecs; a filename is not a live capture configuration.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacselect video and audio encoders in this example. Confirm your FFmpeg build includes the encoders you choose.-f flvselects the output container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest.
This is an illustrative configuration, not a tested command for every FFmpeg package, operating system, input, or account. If your encoder accepts the stream URL and key separately, use its documented fields instead of forcing them into the output URL.
Check FFmpeg’s RTMPS support before troubleshooting the stream
RTMPS is RTMP carried over a secure TLS/SSL connection. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation notes that RTMPS support depends on the RTMP implementation in the build. In particular, the documented librtmp RTMPS variant requires a build configured with --enable-librtmp and the relevant librtmp development files. Packaged FFmpeg builds can differ, so do not assume that a command working on another machine proves your build supports RTMPS.

Inspect the protocols available in your local FFmpeg build using its protocol listing (for example, ffmpeg -protocols) and consult the package or build documentation if RTMPS is absent. If it is unsupported, use an FFmpeg build with suitable RTMPS support or another RTMPS-capable encoder.
Choose output settings that match YouTube’s guidance
Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance to choose a bitrate and resolution for the profile you intend to stream; there is no single bitrate that suits every resolution and frame rate. The current general guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in supported contexts, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds.

Set the encoder’s actual output to the selected profile. A command that connects successfully can still produce poor or unhealthy ingest if the codec, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval does not match platform guidance. Check the stream health/status in Live Control Room after starting the encoder. YouTube’s live encoder settings page is the place to verify current profile values.
