Check whether the source plays, whether the encoder receives and routes its audio, and what YouTube’s Live Control Room reports. The point where sound disappears tells you where to investigate next.
Trace the audio path from source to YouTube
A silence problem can occur before audio reaches the encoder, in the encoder’s capture or routing configuration, or during transmission and ingestion. Work through these checks in order; a moving meter at one stage does not prove the signal reaches the next.

Confirm the source is producing audio
Play the radio source and check its own playback or output status. If you use OBS, watch the meter for the corresponding source in the Audio Mixer while playback is expected. OBS says a missing indicator means no audio is reaching OBS at that point. Playback may not have started, or an audio interface may be disconnected. See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Check the selected device, mute state and routing
Make sure the intended source or capture device is selected and connected. Confirm the source and its mixer output are not muted, and that the audio is routed to the stream. Use the OBS mixer and monitoring controls to locate where the signal stops. A meter that moves in OBS confirms activity at that mixer stage; it does not, by itself, confirm that YouTube receives sound. OBS’s mixer documentation describes its meters and controls.

Inspect what the encoder is actually sending
Check the stream’s sound directly in the encoder and review the audio and video sources routed to it. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, reviewing errors in Live Control Room and examining a local archive file when troubleshooting a stream that looks or sounds bad. If the encoder output is silent, continue checking the source and routing. If it sounds healthy, look at the connection to YouTube and the service’s stream-health status. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Read YouTube’s timestamped stream-health errors
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream and review its stream-health messages. YouTube’s error guidance includes a message for an ingestion stream with no audio. Note the error timestamp and compare it with when silence began or with any recent changes, then correct the audio path and check whether the message clears. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.

Change format settings only when an error points to them
If YouTube reports an incorrect format, its guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion. Treat this as a response to the relevant format error, not a universal fix for silence. Check the exact error and the encoder’s output settings before changing formats. See YouTube’s error guidance.
Use the symptom to choose the next check

These observations narrow the search; they are not guaranteed diagnoses. YouTube’s guidance is to check both the stream in the encoder and the sources routed to it. The exact encoder, operating system, source application and settings vary, so follow the controls available in your setup.

When to suspect an audio interface
Consider the interface only when the evidence points to it—for example, the selected device is missing or disconnected and the encoder receives no audio. Reconnect it, select the intended device and test the signal again. A disconnected interface is one possible cause, not proof that the hardware has failed; consider replacement only after testing confirms a fault.
