Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First identify what is moving: audio relative to video, the whole stream relative to real time, or playback only on a particular device. Then inspect timestamps and input clocks before changing FFmpeg settings. For audio samples that fail to follow valid timestamps, a controlled test with -af aresample=async=1 may help; it is not a universal cure for independent clocks or incorrect timestamps.
Identify which kind of delay you have
“Audio drift” can describe different symptoms, and each points to a different investigation. Compare the stream at the start with a later point, and note what you are listening or watching on.
- Audio gradually moves out of sync with video: Note whether it increasingly leads or trails. A steadily growing offset suggests a timing or clock-rate mismatch may be involved.
- Audio starts out of sync but the offset stays about the same: This is more consistent with a starting alignment problem than cumulative drift.
- The whole stream gets farther behind real time: That is growing delivery or playback latency, not necessarily audio/video drift.
- The symptom changes between players or playback devices: Compare the same moment on another device before changing the encoder. The playback path may affect what you hear.
- The offset jumps suddenly: Record when it happens and preserve the relevant log; a jump is different evidence from a smooth, steadily increasing offset.
Do not infer the cause from one playback impression. Record whether the audio leads or trails, whether the offset grows, jumps, or stays fixed, and which player or device shows it.
Capture the setup and establish a baseline
Before editing the command, save the complete FFmpeg command and note the installed FFmpeg version and build, operating system, input types, audio sample rate and channel layout, output audio codec and sample rate, and whether audio and video come from one source or separate devices or processes. Keep a log from a clean start and another from a later point when the symptom is clear. These details matter because the exact correction depends on the inputs and their timestamp behavior.

Observe synchronization before changing settings
FFplay can report audio/video synchronization drift in its statistics. Use the same observation path at the start and later in a sustained run, and record what changes. FFplay’s master-clock setting is mainly a debugging option, not a general repair. See the FFplay documentation.
Run a test long enough for the suspected drift to become measurable, using audio and motion similar to the planned program. YouTube likewise recommends testing with representative audio and movement. A short test can miss a clock-rate mismatch that accumulates over time.
Check input timestamps and clocks
If audio and video are separate live inputs, determine whether their timestamps derive from the same clock. FFmpeg’s -isync option offsets a target input using the difference in input start times. FFmpeg says the inputs’ timestamps should derive from the same clock for expected results. That makes -isync relevant when starts differ, but it does not correct a clock-rate mismatch that accumulates through a long stream.

Option placement and input ordering matter in FFmpeg commands, and behavior can depend on the installed version. Check the FFmpeg command-line documentation for your build before applying -isync. Do not assume forcing wall-clock timestamps repairs a source clock that is drifting: FFmpeg documents timestamp options, not a blanket synchronization guarantee.

Test audio timestamp compensation with aresample
FFmpeg’s resampler documentation describes async as “simple 1 parameter audio sync to timestamps using stretching, squeezing, filling and trimming.” Its documented default is 0, so no compensation is applied unless enabled. A controlled diagnostic test is:
-af aresample=async=1
Use it only as a test of whether audio samples are failing to match meaningful timestamps. Compare the measured drift over the same sustained interval with and without the filter. If accumulation stops without audible artifacts or unwanted latency changes, the result is useful evidence; it still does not prove upstream timestamps are correct.

The async value governs the maximum number of samples changed per second. Larger values permit more correction, so the appropriate value depends on the measured error and the source. Do not raise it arbitrarily: inspect timestamps and test sound quality as well as synchronization. See the FFmpeg Resampler Documentation.
Match YouTube’s audio format without mistaking it for a drift fix
YouTube Help’s live encoder settings recommend 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Choose the rate that matches the channel layout and delivery configuration you actually use. These are output-format recommendations, not a diagnosis or cure for every long-running drift problem. Sample-rate conversion alone does not make independent input clocks agree.

Choose a correction based on what the evidence shows
| Approach | Use it when | What it changes | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
aresample=async=... |
Audio samples do not keep up with meaningful timestamps. | Stretches or squeezes audio, or fills or trims samples to follow timestamps. | Does not establish that timestamps are correct and can mask an upstream problem. |
-isync |
Separate live inputs have comparable timestamps but different start times. | Offsets one input by the start-time difference. | Expected results require timestamps from a shared clock; it is not continuous clock-rate correction. |
| Output sample-rate configuration | You need to match the intended YouTube audio delivery format. | Converts or encodes audio at the selected rate. | A correct output format does not itself repair timestamp drift. |
| Timestamp or clock-source correction | Evidence points to bad timestamps or independent input timing. | Addresses the underlying timebase or capture arrangement. | The action depends on the specific device, source, command, and logs. |
Compare candidate changes by whether they stop cumulative drift, preserve audio quality, change latency, and are supported by the installed FFmpeg version. Change one variable at a time so you can tell which change affected the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a controlled long-duration test
- Save the original command and logs. Keep a known baseline so you can revert and compare.
- Measure at the beginning. Record whether audio leads or trails, the approximate offset, the player or device used, and any FFplay synchronization statistics.
- Apply one change only. Depending on the evidence, test timestamp-following audio compensation, start-time alignment for separate inputs, or the appropriate output sample rate.
- Repeat under representative conditions. Use the planned audio and movement, and run long enough to determine whether the offset continues to grow.
- Compare the later observation with the baseline. Keep the change only if it addresses the measured symptom without introducing audible artifacts, discontinuities, or unwanted latency changes.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
The offset grows even with aresample=async=1
Do not assume a larger value is automatically better. Recheck whether timestamps are valid and whether separate inputs actually share a clock. Audio compensation follows timestamps; it cannot create a stable common timebase for genuinely independent clocks.
-isync aligns the start, but the streams separate later
-isync addresses a difference in start times, not an ongoing difference in clock rate. Check the input clock relationship and timestamp behavior instead of treating initial alignment as proof of long-run synchronization.

The audio format matches YouTube, but drift remains
Keep the recommended sample rate for the selected channel layout, but investigate timestamps and clocks. Matching 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 is a delivery-format choice, not evidence that the source clocks are synchronized.
It is unclear whether the problem is drift or latency
Compare audio against video and the complete program against wall clock as separate measurements. If both audio and video fall behind real time together, investigate delivery latency rather than changing an audio synchronization filter on the assumption that audio alone is drifting.
The generic steps do not isolate the cause
The relevant evidence is the full FFmpeg command, version and build, input devices or sources, sample rates, channel layout, timestamp behavior, and logs from both the start and the failure point. Without those details, a specific device, timestamp option, or compensation value cannot be prescribed reliably. FFmpeg’s online documentation is rolling; verify syntax and behavior against the build you run.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube meditation stream built from uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a fix for FFmpeg synchronization. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; after that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube.
