YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key; FFmpeg reads your ordered video list and sends a live output to YouTube. The workflow is practical, but the exact Docker image and command depend on your media files and must be tested: the official documentation does not provide a verified, end-to-end Docker recipe for this specific setup.
How the setup works
The Droplet is the server that stays available; Docker runs FFmpeg in an isolated container; and FFmpeg reads your playlist and publishes the encoded output to YouTube Live. For a straightforward one-channel playlist stream, FFmpeg can publish directly to YouTube. An intermediate streaming server is optional, not a required part of this path.
Plan for three things to work together: a YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, media files the server can access, and a network connection from the Droplet to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. First-time YouTube Live enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the channel and stream creation workflow.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. If live streaming is not enabled for the channel, enable it and allow for the possible activation delay.

In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the server URL and stream key. The key is a credential: keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, and logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.

Choose the RTMPS server URL when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP. Store the URL and key in a private configuration mechanism for the host or container rather than embedding them in a file you will publish.
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting FFmpeg alone does not necessarily make a scheduled broadcast public.
Prepare an ordered FFmpeg playlist
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads an ordered list of files as one input. Create a text file such as playlist.txt on the Droplet or in a mounted media directory:

Use paths that resolve from the FFmpeg process’s point of view. If the files are mounted into a container at /media, the list must use those container paths, not paths that exist only on the Droplet host. FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer and its list format in the FFmpeg Formats documentation.

Check compatibility before joining files
The concat demuxer expects compatible streams and formats across the input files. Differences in codecs, stream layout, time bases, or other media properties can lead to failures or playback problems. Inspect the files and test the exact sequence before relying on it for a long broadcast. If they are not compatible, standardize or re-encode them into a consistent set before streaming; that adds processing time and server load.
Only use video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. A technically valid stream can still be removed or restricted for copyright reasons, and repeatedly broadcasting material does not establish that it is authorized. YouTube’s channel policies and monetization decisions can also consider reused content separately from whether a stream connects successfully.

Install Docker on a Droplet, upload the media and playlist, then configure a container image that includes FFmpeg. Mount the media and playlist read-only where practical, pass the YouTube ingest URL and key securely, and ensure the container can reach the network. These are implementation requirements, not a tested image or copy-and-paste deployment supplied by DigitalOcean or FFmpeg for this precise workload.
The actual FFmpeg invocation depends on your input formats, selected codec, and stream settings. Use the settings in the next section, adapt the command to the FFmpeg build in your chosen image, and validate it with a short private or unlisted test. Do not assume a Docker image’s tag, available encoders, or default settings remain unchanged; check the image documentation and run ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders inside the container.

Provision and secure the Droplet. Choose a server size based on whether FFmpeg will copy compatible media or encode it, the resolution and frame rate, and the number of concurrent streams. There is no universal Droplet size established for this workload. Keep the operating system and Docker packages maintained, and restrict access to the server.

Configure the container. Select an FFmpeg image you trust, mount the media and configuration, and provide the stream key without committing it to source control. Verify the container can resolve and connect to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.

Start a test stream. Run FFmpeg with the concat-demuxer input and the intended video, audio, bitrate, keyframe, and RTMPS output settings. Watch FFmpeg’s output for input or connection errors.

Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Confirm the audio and video appear as expected in Live Control Room. For scheduled streams, click Go live once the preview is ready.

Keep the process alive and monitor it. A Droplet avoids dependence on a home computer, but it does not by itself supervise a crashed container or guarantee a connection. Configure an appropriate restart policy or process supervisor, inspect logs, and monitor the broadcast in Live Control Room.

Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, it lists AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and monitoring stream health rather than assuming a server’s advertised outbound capacity guarantees a clean broadcast. The following are YouTube Help’s H.264 bitrate recommendations; the page does not state a publication year. “Minimum” and “recommended” are YouTube’s listed figures, not a guarantee that a particular Droplet or source file will produce a stable stream.

Set the output to match what your source and encoder can sustain. A higher target bitrate uses more outbound bandwidth and can make an unstable connection more visible; lowering resolution or frame rate may be a better fix than increasing server capacity blindly. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into formats for viewers, so the encoder’s input is not the only playback format viewers may receive.

DigitalOcean documents SRS Stack as an open-source streaming/WebRTC solution deployable from its Marketplace to a Droplet. Its page was generated on March 13, 2024, and lists SRS Stack 5.13.31, SRS 5.0, Docker 20.10, and FFmpeg 4.2 as catalog details for that page snapshot—not as a guarantee of current versions. The page’s example using a 4 GB, 2-vCPU Droplet is an SRS deployment example, not proof that those resources are necessary or sufficient for your playlist workload. You cannot start a YouTube broadcast: check whether live streaming is enabled for the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.

YouTube does not receive the encoder: verify that the RTMPS server URL and stream key are current and copied without extra characters. Check container network access and FFmpeg’s connection output. If the key may have leaked, replace it in YouTube Studio.

FFmpeg cannot open a playlist file: confirm the playlist is mounted into the container and each listed path exists from inside that container. Check file permissions and the spelling of each path.

The concat input fails or transitions break: inspect the input files for incompatible streams or formats. Test the sequence independently and make its inputs consistent if needed.

The stream buffers, drops frames, or looks unstable: test the actual upload bitrate, compare it with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate, and monitor Live Control Room. Reduce output demands or investigate server/network load instead of assuming that nominal bandwidth is available to the encoder.

The stream ends when FFmpeg exits: a Droplet is an always-available server, not an automatic recovery mechanism. Check container logs and configure restart supervision; verify that the process reconnects successfully before treating recovery as solved.

A scheduled stream is not public: after the encoder preview appears, complete YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow by clicking Go live.
Plan the stream’s end and archive
Stop FFmpeg when the broadcast should end, then confirm the status in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a substitute for keeping your own authorized source files or for checking that the archive was created as expected.
