OBS vs. FFmpeg for a 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Channel

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS if you want a desktop interface for arranging scenes and making visual changes. Choose FFmpeg if your prerecorded show is mostly a fixed sequence and you can maintain a command-line pipeline. Neither program alone guarantees a 24/7 channel: the computer, connection, YouTube settings, and recovery plan all matter.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your channel?

Need Better fit Why
Arrange visuals, combine sources, or switch scenes through a desktop interface OBS OBS is built around scenes and sources, with stream and recording settings, hotkeys, and an automatic reconnect control. OBS Studio overview
Repeat a fixed video input through a script FFmpeg Its command-line options include -stream_loop -1 for infinite input repetition and -re to read at the input’s native rate for real-time output. These options do not provide process supervision by themselves. FFmpeg command-line documentation
Recover after an interruption Either, with separate operational planning OBS provides automatic reconnect settings; FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has configurable recovery options for temporary output failures. Neither establishes guaranteed uninterrupted uptime. See the OBS overview and FFmpeg documentation.
Change the program while it is live OBS, in most GUI workflows Scenes and sources are readily managed in the interface. FFmpeg can use filters and stream mapping, but those changes are configured through command-line options.
Automate restart and monitoring FFmpeg, if you can maintain the surrounding system A scripted workflow can be integrated with process supervision, logs, and alerts. You must build and operate those pieces; they are not supplied by the loop options.

For a fixed playlist with little live interaction, FFmpeg is often the more direct building block. For a show that needs scene composition or occasional manual changes, OBS is generally easier to operate. The comparison is about workflow, not a measured reliability or performance result: neither application was benchmarked in a 24/7 test for this article.

What both methods need from YouTube

Both encoders send a feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. YouTube documents encoder-controlled auto-start and auto-stop options, recommends RTMPS, and advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Use current settings, not a copied preset

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, the listed 1080p recommendations are 5–14 Mbps at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not independent measurements or a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain them. Choose the row for your intended output and test it on your actual upload connection.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Leave upload headroom above the stream bitrate so normal network variation does not consume the entire available capacity. If health warnings or dropped frames appear, test a lower output bitrate or resolution rather than assuming the published recommendation is a guaranteed minimum connection speed.

Check rights and channel eligibility

Using prerecorded footage does not remove copyright obligations. Before scheduling a long-running stream, confirm that you have the rights to the video, music, game footage, and other material you broadcast. YouTube’s monetization and channel policies also apply to livestreams; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Review YouTube’s current live streaming guidance and relevant channel policies before relying on a stream for revenue. Do not assume that repeating a file makes it original or policy-compliant.

Set up a prerecorded loop in OBS

OBS’s documented workflow supports scenes and sources, custom streaming-server details, output settings, hotkeys, and automatic reconnect. Exact menu wording can vary by OBS release, so confirm the current labels in your installed version. This is a practical outline rather than a one-command loop: configure the media source and verify that it repeats in your scene before relying on it unattended.

  1. Prepare the program. Choose the video or playlist you have permission to broadcast. Check that it plays through to the end, has the intended audio, and uses the resolution and frame rate you want to send.
  2. Create a scene and add the media source. In OBS, add the prerecorded file as a media source. Enable its loop option if you want the same file to restart continuously. For multiple videos or a more involved schedule, arrange the sources and scene transitions you intend to use, then test the sequence from beginning to end.
  3. Connect the YouTube encoder. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the custom service/server option if needed, and enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Prefer YouTube’s RTMPS ingest option when available. Keep the key private.
  4. Set output deliberately. In Settings → Output, choose the encoder, video bitrate, and audio settings to match YouTube’s current recommendations for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. In Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Configure a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds, following YouTube’s current guidance.
  5. Enable and test recovery. Review OBS’s automatic reconnect settings. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, check YouTube’s stream health, and verify that the source loops and audio remains in sync. Test a controlled connection interruption and confirm what happens when OBS reconnects.
  6. Plan recording separately if needed. If you also record locally, OBS recommends MKV when an ungraceful stop is a concern because it avoids corrupting the entire recording. Higher-quality output or a separate encoder can use more system resources. OBS recording guidance

Set up a prerecorded loop in FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s command shape places inputs before outputs, and many options apply to the next input or output. The documented -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input indefinitely; -re paces file reading at its native rate so output behaves like a live feed. These options are only part of an implementation. Codec compatibility, stream selection, output protocol, credentials, and restart supervision must fit your file and YouTube’s current ingest configuration. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Inspect and test the source file. Confirm its video and audio streams, dimensions, frame rate, and codecs. Decide whether stream copy is compatible with the chosen YouTube output or whether the file needs encoding. Do not assume one command works unchanged for every media file.
  2. Build the input loop. Put -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to, and use -re to read a prerecorded file in real time. Select or map the audio and video streams intentionally; a file with unusual or multiple streams may need explicit mapping.
  3. Configure the output for YouTube. Send the output to the current YouTube RTMPS server URL and use the stream key as the required credential. Select codecs, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, audio format, and keyframe interval based on YouTube’s current encoder guidance and what your host can sustain. Protect the key from shell history, shared scripts, and logs where possible.
  4. Add process supervision. Run FFmpeg under a supervisor or another restart policy that can detect a stopped process, restart it, and retain useful logs. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer offers configurable recovery attempts for temporary output failures, but it requires command-line configuration and does not replace host monitoring or a restart policy.
  5. Test failure cases. Verify the loop at a file boundary, check YouTube stream health and audio, and test what happens after an encoder stop and a lost connection. Confirm that your supervisor behaves as expected and that a restarted process can use the correct credentials and output settings.

What “24/7” operation actually requires

A loop is not a complete always-on service. Continuous operation depends on the host staying powered on, a stable internet connection, valid stream credentials, available media, correct ingest settings, and a way to notice and respond to failures. An OBS reconnect control or FFmpeg recovery option addresses only part of that chain. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; build those checks into the operating plan rather than treating a successful launch as proof of ongoing delivery.

  • Test the exact source files, including their audio and loop transitions.
  • Confirm the intended resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and ingest URL in a test stream.
  • Check behavior after a stopped encoder, interrupted connection, host restart, and expired or changed stream key.
  • Keep logs or alerts that tell you when the encoder stops or YouTube reports stream-health problems.
  • Consider backup power for an always-on computer if an outage would interrupt the stream; a UPS is an optional general measure, not a YouTube or OBS requirement.

Common problems and what to check

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed

Check that the server URL and stream key match the current YouTube Studio settings, the key has not been reset, and the selected RTMPS endpoint is entered correctly. Treat the key as a secret and replace it if exposed.

The stream starts but drops frames or reports poor health

Compare the configured bitrate and output mode with the connection’s reliable upload capacity. YouTube’s recommended bitrate is not a promise about your network. Test at a lower bitrate or resolution, check the host’s load, and monitor stream health during the test.

The file ends instead of repeating

In OBS, check the media source’s loop setting and confirm the correct source is active. In FFmpeg, ensure -stream_loop -1 applies to the intended input. Test a complete file boundary before leaving the stream unattended.

The encoder reconnects but the channel is not reliably live

Reconnect behavior does not prove that the feed recovered correctly. Check OBS’s reconnect settings or FFmpeg’s output and supervisor logs, then verify the stream status and health in YouTube Studio. Test both a brief connection loss and a full encoder restart.

Audio is missing, mismatched, or out of sync

Check which audio stream is selected or mapped, whether the source contains audio, and whether the chosen output format is supported by the current YouTube ingest settings. Review the test stream in YouTube rather than relying only on local playback.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the prerecorded channel to keep running without leaving OBS or a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The DIY methods above give you control over the local pipeline; StreamNeo removes the need to keep that computer and home connection running.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
  • Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • It attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
