If a YouTube stream disconnects from a VPS described as “BSNL,” first verify the current YouTube RTMPS endpoint, then check outbound TCP 443, DNS, the VPS route, and encoder stability. The wording alone does not establish that BSNL operates the VPS or that BSNL is blocking traffic; identify the actual VPS provider and use repeatable tests before assigning blame.
First distinguish a connection failure from stream instability
A timeout or SSL/TLS error can mean the encoder cannot establish the configured connection. Dropped frames generally mean a connection was established but the path is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can eventually disconnect a stream. OBS describes dropped frames in these terms in its dropped-frames guidance.
YouTube supports RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” — YouTube Help.
1. Verify the current YouTube endpoint and encoder settings
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the stream’s Stream settings. Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL shown for that stream; do not rely on a saved hostname or path.
- In OBS or your encoder, confirm the server URL uses the
rtmpsscheme and that the encoder supports RTMPS. Check for a stale or mistyped URL. - If an SSL error persists, YouTube Help advises checking the URL and specifying port 443. The YouTube Live API RTMPS guidance specifies a TLS connection on port 443 and requires TLS SNI to contain the ingestion hostname.
- Use the hostname YouTube provides as the TLS SNI name. Do not replace the current endpoint with a remembered fixed hostname or path.
2. Check outbound firewall rules from the VPS
The VPS is initiating a connection to YouTube, so investigate outbound traffic first. For the current RTMPS configuration, verify that outbound TCP to the configured ingest endpoint on port 443 is allowed.

- Inspect the guest operating system’s firewall rules for outbound filtering.
- If the VPS provider has a separate firewall, security group, or network-policy panel, check that too. Provider-edge controls and the guest firewall are separate possible enforcement points.
- Do not treat inbound port forwarding as the default fix. Sending a stream from a VPS to YouTube ordinarily does not require unsolicited inbound access to the VPS.
A TCP connection test can indicate whether a handshake appears possible at that moment, but it does not establish that the RTMPS/TLS handshake, SNI, stream key, or sustained video delivery is correct. A successful TLS connection likewise does not prove that the route will remain stable throughout a broadcast.
3. Check DNS, address family, and the route
- Resolve the exact ingest hostname currently configured in the encoder, from the VPS itself. A result from your home computer or another network does not establish what the VPS resolves.
- Record the time in UTC and repeat DNS and connection checks during both working and failing periods. Include the returned addresses in your notes.
- Compare IPv4 and IPv6 as a controlled test, changing only one variable. OBS documents testing IPv4-only as a troubleshooting option; if it makes no difference, return to the default dual-stack setting.
- Run traceroute or MTR from the VPS toward the configured destination and save repeated results. These show clues about the path, not definitive proof that a particular intermediate hop is dropping your stream: routers may suppress diagnostic probes while forwarding ordinary traffic.
General VPS network troubleshooting guidance recommends ping, traceroute, or MTR to help distinguish local configuration and firewall issues from transit-provider trouble. 4. Check OBS behavior and sustainable bitrate
When OBS connects but reports dropped frames, compare configured bitrate with the upload capacity that the VPS can sustain to YouTube, not merely a brief peak measurement. A fluctuating or congested path can be insufficient even when a short test succeeds.
- Try another server only if YouTube or the encoder offers an appropriate alternative, and record the exact endpoint used.
- Lower bitrate as a controlled test. If drops improve, the connection may not sustain the previous setting, though this does not identify why.
- Leave Bind to IP at Default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Test IPv4-only if appropriate, then restore the default dual-stack option if the test does not help.
- Check whether firewall or antivirus software, or a VPN, is interfering with the connection.
- Dynamic bitrate may reduce dropped frames when capacity varies, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying cause and can lower video quality.
Change one setting at a time and log the result. If the stream works from a different network, that supports investigating a path-specific issue, but does not by itself prove whether the VPS host, transit network, or destination path is responsible. OBS recommends contacting the relevant ISP when software-side checks do not resolve route instability.

What “BSNL VPS” does—and does not—establish
“BSNL VPS” is ambiguous: it could refer to the VPS operator, the network used to access the VPS, or another service description. There is no established BSNL-specific YouTube RTMPS block, outage, route, or port policy here. Do not treat anecdotes about BSNL home broadband routing as evidence of a VPS egress restriction. Ask the company that actually operates the VPS to verify its outbound policy and upstream path.

- Event timestamps in UTC and the exact encoder error or relevant log lines.
- The current ingest hostname, protocol, and port (avoid sharing your stream key).
- Whether TCP connection and TLS negotiation succeed from the VPS, and the DNS answers observed.
- Guest firewall and provider-panel rule state.
- Repeated traceroute or MTR results, including tests during a failure and during a working period if available.
- A concise question asking whether outbound RTMPS is filtered and whether route instability or congestion was observed at those times.
