Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For a standard-dynamic-range retail promo loop, start with 1920×1080 at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 5 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, Rec. 709 color, and AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps. Send the feed to YouTube over RTMPS. These settings follow YouTube’s recommendations for 1080p30 H.264, but they are a starting point—not a guarantee of image quality or uninterrupted broadcasting. Test your actual content and connection before launch.
Recommended OBS settings for a retail promo loop
This preset is for an SDR channel built around prerecorded product footage, graphics, text, and audio—not HDR production or interactive live camera work. YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default, but you can set the output deliberately in OBS so the stream matches your intended format.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | A practical source size for product images and promotional text. Check small text on a phone, where fine print may be difficult to read. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | A sensible starting point for a mostly static promo loop. Use 60 fps only when smoother motion is useful and your computer and upload connection can sustain the higher requirement. |
| Encoder | H.264 | A widely supported choice for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, but this preset uses H.264. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for live streaming. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30. It is a platform recommendation, not a measurement of your channel or connection. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and advises not exceeding 4 seconds. OBS notes that a consistent interval helps smooth transitions between transcoded quality options. |
| Audio | AAC, 44.1 kHz, stereo, 128 kbps | YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 kbps. Confirm that every music track and voice recording is cleared for use. |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR | YouTube’s SDR recommendation. HDR requires separate hardware, codec, and configuration choices and is generally unnecessary for promo graphics. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers. |
| Latency | Normal latency | Lower latency can increase buffering and is less important when viewers do not interact with the streamer. |
| DVR | Choose according to viewer needs | DVR allows viewers to pause and resume the live stream. Decide whether that behavior suits the channel. |
See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current technical guidance. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, including the source feed, but transcoding does not compensate for an unstable incoming signal or a poor-quality source.
Choose a bitrate that fits the content and connection
For YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates, 1080p30 starts at 5 Mbps and 1080p60 at 17 Mbps. If you need a lower-bandwidth fallback, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for 720p30; its recommendation for 720p60 is 8 Mbps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a particular result. Use 60 fps only if the added smoothness matters for your product footage and your encoding hardware and upload capacity can sustain it.

Run a test using the actual scenes, transitions, graphics, text, and audio in the planned broadcast. YouTube advises testing with movement and sound similar to the real stream, monitoring stream health, and checking the messages shown in the Live Control Room. A static opening card alone will not reveal how fine text or fast product movement holds up.
Set up OBS and verify the YouTube feed
- Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. YouTube advises setting up encoder streams at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event. For an always-on channel, use that lead time to complete a pre-launch test and check the feed after changes.
- Enter the encoder settings in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Output and configure the streaming encoder for H.264, CBR, and 5,000 Kbps. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Under Settings → Video, set the output resolution to 1920×1080 and frame rate to 30 fps. Under Settings → Audio, use 44.1 kHz; set the streaming audio bitrate to 128 Kbps and stereo. Menu wording and available encoder choices can vary by OBS version and hardware.
- Connect with RTMPS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the RTMPS server and stream key provided by YouTube. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube and replace it in OBS.
- Check the preview and stream health. Start OBS, then confirm the preview in the Live Control Room. Check that picture, audio, text, and the active promo are correct. Verify the live watch page from the channel and a mobile device, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Test the complete loop. Review transitions and the point where the playlist restarts. Listen for silence, clipping, or unintended gaps, and confirm that each promotion is current. YouTube’s guidance is to monitor audio and video quality during the stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS and describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance before sharing access or changing a key.

Plan for continuous operation, not just a good first frame
Test recovery and failover
A correct OBS preset does not make a PC, power supply, network, or YouTube ingest connection fail-proof. If you have a backup encoder or connection, test the failover path before relying on it. YouTube specifically suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during a test, then checking whether the player switches to the backup encoder. Its guidance does not specify a complete redundancy design for a retail channel.
Monitor the encoder and the viewer-facing stream
During operation, keep an eye on OBS dropped frames and encoding overload, YouTube’s stream-health panel, audio presence, and whether the intended promo or playlist is on screen. These OBS checks are practical operational suggestions; YouTube’s official advice is to monitor stream quality and health. A UPS may help keep the PC and network equipment powered during a short outage, but size it using measured power draw and desired runtime. It cannot fix an ISP failure, software crash, or ingest outage.

Make recording and archive handling explicit
YouTube recommends verifying local archive files and checking that their file size is growing. Its encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour archive will cover an always-on operation: plan local recording, segmented files, retention, and any restart or re-stream workflow your channel requires. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder setup help.
Copyright and channel-content checks for retail promos
- Clear every audio and video element. Confirm that you have the rights needed to stream product footage, music, voiceovers, images, and other material. A song licensed for an in-store playlist or a social post is not automatically cleared for a continuous YouTube live stream.
- Review the entire loop, not just the opening. Check that prices, offers, dates, product claims, and calls to action remain accurate wherever the sequence repeats. Remove expired promotions before the next loop.
- Use material that serves a real channel purpose. A playlist of prerecorded ads may be technically streamable, but rights clearance alone does not establish that a channel complies with YouTube’s rules or is eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s current policies for the channel and content rather than assuming that a 24/7 format changes them.
- Keep the stream key private. Store it as a credential, limit access to people who need it, and reset it if exposed.
When OBS is the right 24/7 approach
OBS is a free, open-source recording and streaming option listed in YouTube’s encoder directory. It suits an operation that wants direct control of local scenes and encoding and can keep a reliable PC, power, network, and monitoring process running. The trade-off is operational: the stream depends on that local setup and a tested recovery plan.

YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for streaming prerecorded videos 24/7, alongside other encoder and production options. A directory listing is not an endorsement of pricing, suitability, uptime, or partnership. When comparing local and cloud operation, check whether the service supports your prerecorded loop, how recovery works, what archive controls you need, its current terms and cost, and who can access the stream key. Confirm service capabilities directly before choosing. See YouTube’s live streaming encoder directory.

Quick Recap
Common problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the picture buffers | The incoming signal may be unstable or the connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. | Check OBS dropped frames and YouTube stream health. Test the connection with the real promo content; if needed, try YouTube’s 720p30 H.264 recommendation of 3 Mbps. |
| OBS reports encoding overload or frames are dropped | The local encoder or system may be unable to maintain the selected output under load. | Check OBS diagnostics and test at 30 fps rather than 60 fps. A lower output such as 720p30 may reduce demands; retest before relying on the change. |
| Text or product details look soft | Small text may not remain readable after encoding and YouTube transcoding, especially on phone screens. | Review the actual feed on a mobile device. Increase text size or simplify graphics rather than assuming a higher frame rate will improve legibility. |
| No audio, silence, or unexpected music | The wrong audio source may be selected, a source may be muted, or the loop may have an audio gap. | Listen to the Live Control Room preview and the viewer-facing page, then check OBS audio meters and the full playlist cycle. Confirm rights for all audio. |
| The wrong promo appears or an offer is expired | The playlist or source file may not have been updated before the loop restarted. | Review the complete sequence and confirm that the current playlist and promotional details are loaded. |
| YouTube stops receiving the stream after a key change | OBS may still have the old stream key. | Copy the current key from YouTube into OBS. If the old key was exposed, reset it and update every encoder that uses it. |
| The stream drops and does not resume | The local encoder, PC, power, network, or ingest path may have failed; recovery may not be configured or tested. | Check the encoder and network, then test a documented backup path. Do not assume failover works until the player has switched during a test. |
