To stream a Mixxx show to YouTube Live, send Mixxx’s audio into an encoder such as OBS, add a visual source, then send the encoder’s combined feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Mixxx’s documented Live Broadcasting feature targets Icecast and Shoutcast—not YouTube directly—so an Icecast or Shoutcast server is optional and only needed if you also want a conventional internet-radio stream.
Choose the right signal path
For a YouTube-only broadcast, the path is Mixxx audio → encoder → YouTube Live. The encoder captures the audio Mixxx is playing, combines it with a camera, graphic, or other visual, and sends the result to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Control Room supplies the stream URL and stream key the encoder needs.
If you also want listeners to hear the show through an internet-radio service, Mixxx can send a separate broadcast to an Icecast or Shoutcast server. That is a second destination with its own server settings; it does not replace YouTube’s encoder URL and key. See the Mixxx Live Broadcasting manual and YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
What you need before going live
- A Mixxx installation with your show or playlist ready to play. The cited manual covers Mixxx 2.4; it notes that 2.5 is the latest release, so button names and menus may differ by version.
- An encoder that accepts an audio input and can send a live video feed to YouTube, such as OBS.
- A YouTube channel eligible to use Live Control Room and a stream created or selected there.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the chosen video bitrate, plus headroom for normal network variation.
- A visual source: a camera, show artwork, or another image/video scene. YouTube receives an encoder feed, so audio alone is not the complete video stream.
Audio capture depends on your operating system and routing setup. You may be able to select desktop or application audio in the encoder; an external microphone, mixer, or audio interface is an optional alternative when your show uses hardware. YouTube lists microphones and mixers as possible equipment, not mandatory components: YouTube’s live-streaming equipment guidance.

Set up the YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create a new stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. Check that you are configuring the intended stream before copying credentials.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in your encoder’s streaming settings. The key identifies where YouTube should receive the encoder feed and allows YouTube to accept it; keep it private like a password. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before your next broadcast.
- Use the URL YouTube provides. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, when your encoder supports it. Select the RTMPS server URL displayed in Live Control Room rather than guessing or reusing an endpoint from another service. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Route Mixxx audio into the encoder
- Start Mixxx and load your set. Confirm the master output plays through the device or system output that your encoder can capture.
- Create a scene in the encoder. Add your camera, show graphic, or other visual source, then add the audio input carrying Mixxx playback. The exact capture device and menu path depend on the operating system and encoder version; select the correct device rather than assuming the default input contains Mixxx.
- Check the audio meters. Play a track and confirm the encoder’s meters respond. Listen to the encoder’s monitoring or preview path if available, and make sure the signal is not silent, distorted, or duplicated through two capture sources.
- Check the visual preview. Confirm the intended image or camera appears and that the scene is framed correctly. If you use a static graphic, ensure it is actually included as a visible source in the outgoing scene.
Operating-system-specific loopback setup is not covered by the cited Mixxx and YouTube pages. If the encoder does not see Mixxx audio, consult current capture instructions for your OS and encoder, then test the complete route before scheduling a public broadcast.
Choose encoder settings that YouTube can ingest
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance as the reference for resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate; choose values your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS recommendations include H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. For stereo audio, its advanced guidance recommends 128 kbps using AAC or MP3. Settings and recommended bitrate depend on the selected output resolution and frame rate, so do not treat one video bitrate as universal. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and use its current table.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Two-second interval.
- Audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube’s advanced guidance recommends 128 kbps for stereo.
- Resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate: Pick a combination from YouTube’s current recommendations that your encoder and sustained upload capacity can handle.
When your show is audio-led, a static or lightly animated visual may be sufficient; a higher frame rate or resolution is not automatically better if it makes the feed unstable. YouTube transcodes a live feed into multiple output formats for viewers, but the source still needs to arrive reliably and with the audio you intend.
Preview, go live, and end the stream cleanly
- Start streaming from the encoder. Wait for YouTube Live Control Room to detect the incoming feed and display its preview.
- Inspect the preview and stream health. Confirm picture, Mixxx audio, and levels before making the broadcast public. Check that there is no unintended desktop audio, silence, clipping, or missing visual.
- Start the public broadcast. For a scheduled stream, use Go live in Live Control Room after the preview is ready. Keep monitoring the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health indications during the show.
- End the broadcast. Follow the event workflow in YouTube Studio: end the stream in Live Control Room, then stop the encoder feed as appropriate. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe stopping the encoder feed as part of ending a stream.
When to configure Mixxx for Icecast or Shoutcast
Configure Mixxx’s Live Broadcasting tab only when you also need a separate radio-server destination. In Mixxx 2.4, the connection details include server type, host name or IP, login, mount, port, and password. Icecast requires a mount point; the manual warns not to put a full URL in the Host field. Mixxx supports MP3 or Ogg Vorbis for Icecast and MP3 for Shoutcast. Its manual describes 128 or 160 kbps as common radio-stream audio bitrates. Those radio settings are separate from YouTube’s encoder video feed and credentials. See the Mixxx 2.4 Live Broadcasting documentation.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not detect the encoder feed | The encoder has an incorrect URL or stream key, or has not started sending. | Copy the current URL and key from the intended Live Control Room stream, confirm the encoder is streaming, and verify RTMPS support and URL selection. |
| Video appears but Mixxx is silent | The encoder is capturing the wrong audio device or no audio input. | Play Mixxx and watch the encoder meters; select the system or application capture device that carries Mixxx audio and recheck the preview. |
| Audio is distorted or unexpectedly loud | Mixxx output or encoder input levels may be clipping, or duplicate capture sources may be adding together. | Lower the relevant source level, remove duplicate audio capture if present, and listen to the monitored output before going live. |
| The stream health degrades or drops | The selected bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the connection may be unstable. | Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate, reduce the outgoing load if needed, and test under the same network conditions. |
| Mixxx cannot connect to Icecast | Radio-server fields may be wrong or the required mount point may be missing. | Check server type, host, login, port, password, and mount. Do not enter a full URL in Mixxx’s Host field. |
