To make an OBS playlist overlay update, handle two separate jobs: use a playlist-aware player to advance the YouTube videos, and use an overlay that reads the active video’s information to change its title or thumbnail. In OBS, add the player or overlay as a Browser Source. A standard Text Source displays editable text; OBS does not document automatic synchronization between that text and a YouTube playlist.
First decide what should update
“Update” can mean the video advances, the overlay title or thumbnail changes, or both. A playlist player can advance without changing a separate label. Decide which behavior you need before choosing a source:
- Playback only: Load a playlist-capable player as a Browser Source.
- Playback and matching metadata: Use a player or overlay that can identify the current video and redraw its title or thumbnail when the playlist moves to the next item.
- Static or manually changed label: Use an OBS Text Source and edit its text yourself when needed.
Set up playlist playback in OBS
- Choose a playlist-capable player. You need a webpage or player that accepts a YouTube playlist and can play it in the scene. The third-party project OBS-Youtube-Player is one example; its README describes playlist URLs, an initial playlist index, loop and random options, and optional current-song title and author display. It is not an official OBS feature. Check the project’s current instructions and test its behavior with your setup before relying on it live: OBS-Youtube-Player README.
- Add it to the intended scene. In OBS, open Sources → + → Browser Source. Choose to create a source, give it a recognizable name, and enter the player or overlay webpage URL in its properties. Set its dimensions to fit the content and place it in the scene. OBS describes Browser Source as a way to add a webpage to a scene; see the OBS Sources Guide.
- Configure the playlist and order. Use the player’s documented playlist URL and settings for its starting item, sequence, and loop or random behavior. These controls belong to the player; adding a Browser Source by itself does not make YouTube advance through a playlist.
- Arrange the scene. In the Sources list, move the player and overlay above or below other sources as needed. OBS displays higher sources above lower ones. Resize, crop, and position them so the video and any title or thumbnail are visible.
Make the title or thumbnail follow the video
Playback and metadata synchronization are different capabilities. If the player advances but the visible label stays unchanged, the label is not receiving the new video’s identity. Choose a player or browser overlay that exposes current-video information and redraws the title or thumbnail after each playlist transition. OBS-Youtube-Player’s README describes an optional title display, but that project’s stated features do not guarantee compatibility or reliable playlist advancement in every current OBS and YouTube setup.
If you build or adapt a browser overlay, its page needs to detect the active video change, obtain the new video’s metadata, and update the displayed elements. A standalone OBS Text Source does not document a built-in connection to YouTube playlist events. The OBS sources guide describes it as customizable text, not an automatic playlist-status display.

OBS’s documentation covers Browser Source, Text Source, source order, and VLC playlist support; it does not document a native source that tracks the current item in a YouTube playlist. For browser-source behavior and URL handling, see the OBS Project Sources Guide.
Test the transition before going live
- Preview the scene and confirm the first playlist item appears.
- Let the player reach a second item. Confirm separately that the video changes and the title or thumbnail changes.
- Check the intended order, looping or random behavior, source visibility, and layout.
- Reload the Browser Source and confirm the player resumes or returns to the expected starting state.
- Repeat the checks under the same account, playlist permissions, and scene setup you intend to use on stream. The behavior of a third-party player depends on its implementation and YouTube’s current embed conditions.
Troubleshoot common failures
The video advances, but the title stays the same
The player and metadata overlay are not synchronized. Use a player or overlay that exposes the current video’s metadata, or add transition handling to the browser page. If using OBS-Youtube-Player’s title option, verify the project’s current setup instructions and test more than one playlist transition.

The title changes, but the video does not
Check that the URL identifies the intended playlist and that the player’s playlist, starting-index, and loop settings are configured as intended. A Text Source or overlay cannot make the underlying player advance.
The player or overlay is hidden behind another source
Change its position in the OBS Sources list. Higher sources appear above lower ones. Also check source visibility and adjust the source’s size, crop, and position in the scene.

Someone suggested a VLC playlist for YouTube
VLC playlist support in OBS is for supported local media when VLC is installed. It is not a documented YouTube playlist workflow. Use a playlist-capable browser player for YouTube playback.
You have an overlay webpage URL
Add it through Sources → + → Browser Source and enter its URL in the source properties. OBS’s project wiki also documents creating a browser source by dragging a URL into OBS; some source properties may be configurable through URL arguments. Check the overlay provider’s instructions before adding arguments.
