How to Show a Now-Playing Track Title on a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To show the current song on a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream, add a separate overlay that can read track metadata from the player, or use a playout platform with a built-in Now Playing element. OBS and YouTube’s encoder connection do not automatically know which track in a playlist is playing. Choose a method that matches your playback source, then test track changes, pauses, stops and long titles before relying on it during an unattended stream.

What a now-playing overlay needs

A track label has two parts: a source of current-track metadata (such as a title and artist) and a visible element in your stream scene. Your encoder sends the video and audio to YouTube; it does not, by itself, create or supply the track title. YouTube’s Help guide, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder,” describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming and explains connecting it to YouTube with a server URL and stream key. It does not describe a native mechanism that passes a playlist’s current track into an OBS overlay.

That distinction matters for 24/7 lofi streams: the overlay must be connected to the same playback method that is actually supplying the music. A tool that reads a browser player may not read a desktop app, and a method based on YouTube chapters or a description playlist depends on those inputs being present and supported.

Choose a method that matches your playback source

Method Playback and metadata source How it appears in OBS Important limitation
Music on stream The OBS Project Forum listing says it supports YouTube and YouTube Music, with YouTube chapters or video-description playlists as possible title inputs. Browser-source overlay Confirm that your player and playlist or chapter format match the extension’s supported inputs.
YouTube Music desktop-app bridge The community project documents metadata from the Tuna OBS plugin included with the th-ch YouTube Music desktop app. Native OBS text and image sources reading generated files Requires the desktop app and Python 3.8 or later; the documented receiver leaves the last title visible if the app closes.
Streamling Its repository says it detects supported music players, including YouTube and YouTube Music in browsers. Local web overlay added to OBS or other streaming software Current download availability, player compatibility and long-run unattended behavior are not established by the repository description.
Playout-platform Now Playing element A vendor help article describes a live-channel composition element that reads metadata from a media file or managed library. Element in the platform’s composition editor This is for a managed media-library workflow, not a direct method for reading a browser playlist into OBS.

Route A: Add a browser overlay for YouTube or YouTube Music

This is the most direct option when the stream’s actual playback source and playlist or chapter data match the extension’s supported inputs. The OBS Project Forum listing for “Music on stream” describes a Chrome extension with an overlay, theme editor and CSS customization. It also says the overlay can hide when music is paused and scroll long titles. The listing was created April 12, 2024 and last updated September 18, 2025; those are listing dates, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current browser or YouTube playlist format.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check the input first. Decide whether you will play a YouTube video or YouTube Music in a browser, and whether the title information will come from YouTube chapters or a description playlist. Confirm that your specific input is supported by the extension’s own current instructions.
  2. Install and configure the extension using its own guide. Use its documented setup to create the overlay. The available listing does not establish exact current menu labels, so follow the extension’s current installation instructions rather than guessing at settings.
  3. Add the overlay to OBS as a browser source. Use the overlay address and dimensions provided by the extension. Keep the label clear of other on-screen text and important artwork.
  4. Preview real transitions. Check that the title changes when the next track starts, that pausing behaves as expected, and that a long title scrolls or otherwise remains readable. Do these checks in the actual scene before using it in a continuous broadcast.

Route B: Use YouTube Music desktop playback with native OBS sources

If you specifically play music in the th-ch YouTube Music desktop app and want OBS text and image sources rather than a browser overlay, a public community GitHub project documents a local bridge. The app’s Tuna OBS plugin sends track metadata to a Python receiver; the receiver writes a title text file and a cover-image file for OBS to display. This is a community example, not a feature supported by Google or OBS.

  1. Install the documented prerequisites. The project calls for the YouTube Music desktop app and Python 3.8 or later. Pillow is optional according to its README. Follow the project’s current README for installation and receiver configuration.
  2. Run the receiver and connect the app’s plugin. The README documents running the receiver manually or as a user service. Configure the Tuna plugin to send metadata to the local receiver as described by the project.
  3. Create an OBS text source that reads the title file. Point the source at the text file generated by the receiver so the displayed title updates with incoming metadata.
  4. Create an OBS image source for the cover file. Point it at the image file produced by the receiver; the README says the image reloads when the cover changes.
  5. Test what happens when playback ends or the app closes. The README says there is no staleness timeout: if the app is fully closed, the last track remains visible. If a stale title would mislead viewers, add a suitable clear or timeout mechanism and verify it works before leaving the stream unattended.

Route C: Use a local music-overlay app

Streamling’s repository describes a freeware app that detects supported music players and serves a local overlay for OBS or other streaming software. It says the overlay can show title and artist and transition or disappear when playback changes, stops or pauses; its listed sources include YouTube and YouTube Music in browsers. This can suit someone who wants player detection and a customizable web overlay instead of setting up a Python bridge.

Route D: Use a built-in Now Playing element in a managed library

A vendor help article dated July 9, 2026 describes a composition editor with a Now Playing element for a live channel. It says the element updates when a new track or video starts, can format title and artist, and uses metadata from the media file or library. The guide advises correcting inaccurate file metadata and handling long-title overflow.

This route is relevant if your content rotates from a managed media library in that platform. It is not a browser-playlist-to-OBS recipe. Check the vendor’s current documentation for supported workflow, availability and pricing before choosing it.

Make the title readable and dependable

  • Correct the metadata at its source. A title overlay can only display the information it receives. For a managed media library, correct the file metadata; for a browser-based method, make sure the chapters or description playlist provide the intended titles.
  • Design for long names. Preview the longest likely title against the stream background. Check whether the chosen overlay scrolls, wraps or truncates text, and ensure contrast remains legible.
  • Test state changes. Verify a normal track change, pause, stop, player restart and browser-source refresh. Where a tool can leave the last title in place, decide how you will clear it or indicate that playback has stopped.
  • Test the actual unattended setup. The cited tool descriptions do not establish continuous 24/7 reliability. A successful short preview does not demonstrate that an extension, local helper or player will keep working indefinitely.

OBS and YouTube setup: what the overlay does not replace

You still need a functioning YouTube stream and encoder in addition to the track-title overlay. YouTube Help says to copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder and start the stream; for a scheduled stream, its guide says to wait for the preview and click Go live. Connect a microphone, webcam, headset or other audio/video hardware only if your production uses it—those devices are not requirements for displaying a song title.

The overlay is a separate scene element. Test it alongside the encoder setup so you can tell whether a missing title is a metadata/overlay problem or a stream-connection problem. A visible title does not establish that you have rights to use the music, that the stream is eligible for monetization, or that YouTube will treat the content as original; those questions require separate review of the applicable rights and platform policies.

Troubleshooting a missing or incorrect track title

Symptom Likely area to check Practical check or fix
The overlay appears, but no title is shown. Metadata input or player compatibility Confirm the extension’s supported input and that the chapters or description playlist contain the title data it expects. For the desktop bridge, check that the app plugin and local receiver are running and receiving metadata.
The title never changes. Player-to-overlay connection or source refresh Switch tracks while previewing the scene. For the Python bridge, verify that the receiver is writing updated files and that OBS sources point to those files. For a browser overlay, recheck the supported player and input format.
A previous track stays visible after playback stops. Stale metadata behavior The documented YouTube Music bridge has no staleness timeout and leaves the last title visible when its app closes. Add a clear/timeout behavior if needed; test pause and stop separately from closing the app.
The title is cut off or difficult to read. Overlay layout and title length Use the overlay’s documented scrolling or formatting controls where available; adjust placement and preview a long title over the actual background.
The source works in a preview but not after a restart. Local helper, player or browser-source lifecycle Restart the stream components in the order documented by the tool, confirm the receiver or overlay server starts again, and test the browser source’s refresh behavior before relying on it unattended.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on, but it is not a camera input or a Now Playing overlay: configure your track-label method separately if you need current titles shown on screen.
