Amazon EC2 can host software that sends a prerecorded video feed to YouTube Live, but EC2 is not a ready-made streaming service—and the available YouTube guidance does not confirm a built-in feature that loops a prerecorded file into a continuous live stream. YouTube Live receives a feed from an encoder; EC2 is general-purpose cloud compute you would have to configure and operate. For a managed way to keep uploaded videos looping to YouTube, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud, with no home computer left on.
What are you comparing?
These are different layers, not equivalent products. YouTube Live is the destination and stream-ingestion platform. An encoder supplies the video feed by connecting to YouTube’s server URL with a stream key. Amazon EC2 is virtual compute: it can run software, but you must select and manage that software and its streaming workflow.
AWS’s documented live-video architecture is broader than an EC2 instance. It describes an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, media storage or preparation with MediaStore or MediaPackage, and CloudFront for delivery. That architecture is useful context, but it is not evidence that EC2 alone is a turnkey YouTube-looping service. AWS’s CloudFront video documentation explains the components.
| Question | YouTube Live | Self-managed EC2 workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What does it do? | Accepts an encoder’s live feed and provides YouTube’s live-stream workflow. | Provides virtual compute on which you may run encoding or streaming software; the operator assembles and manages the workflow. |
| Who supplies the feed? | An encoder configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. | You choose and operate the software that generates and sends the feed to YouTube. |
| Does the documented service itself loop an uploaded file continuously? | Not established by the YouTube guidance cited here. | Not by EC2 alone; looping depends on the software and configuration you implement. |
| Who handles viewer delivery? | YouTube is the destination for this workflow. | For a broader AWS live-distribution service, AWS describes additional media processing, origin or packaging, and delivery components; requirements depend on the architecture. |
Does YouTube have a built-in 24/7 prerecorded-video loop?
The cited YouTube Help pages explain creating a live stream, connecting an encoder, and archiving qualifying streams. They do not describe a native function that repeatedly plays an uploaded prerecorded file as a continuous live feed. Do not assume that creating a YouTube live event, by itself, starts a file loop.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive statement about a stream session, not a stated maximum for a continuous channel assembled through other workflows. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance and its encoder workflow.
How an encoder sends a feed to YouTube Live
For an encoder-based stream, YouTube is not the playback engine. The encoder turns its input into a digital stream and sends it to YouTube. YouTube documents software and hardware encoders; the correct choice depends on how the video is produced. A server-based prerecorded loop needs software capable of playing the media repeatedly and encoding or forwarding it as a live feed.

- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s current live-control workflow to create or select the stream and obtain the server URL and stream key.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder. For a prerecorded loop, configure the playback source and repeat behavior in that encoder or its media workflow; YouTube’s cited instructions do not supply those loop controls.
- Set output format and connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Match codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the current settings table and the source your encoder can sustain.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Wait for the incoming stream to appear in the live-control workflow, review the preview, then start the live event as directed by the current interface.
- Secure the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or expose it in a public script, log, or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Encoder settings that matter
YouTube publishes settings by codec, resolution, and frame rate, and those recommendations can change. Consult the official YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page when configuring a stream rather than relying on a copied bitrate from an older guide.
- Connection: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation; it is the secure extension of RTMP.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate: use the current YouTube table for the selected combination. The source file’s quality, the encoder’s output capability, and available upload bandwidth all matter.
- Loop behavior: verify that the chosen software can repeat the source without ending the encoder session. A playlist or loop configured in a player is a separate function from YouTube’s ingest settings.
What managing a loop on EC2 involves
EC2 gives you a virtual machine, not an automatically maintained playback channel. A self-managed setup means you are responsible for choosing and configuring playback and encoding software, connecting it to YouTube, and keeping the process healthy. Depending on the design, you may also need monitoring, restart and recovery behavior, storage, and a separate distribution architecture. AWS’s documented CloudFront workflow illustrates a managed-services architecture; it is not a tested EC2 recipe for looping video to YouTube.

- Choose a machine and operating system capable of playing and encoding the media at the required output settings.
- Put the source media somewhere the playback process can access it, and check available storage and transfer needs.
- Configure playback, repeat or playlist behavior, encoder output, RTMPS connection, and the YouTube stream key.
- Plan how the process detects a failed connection, restarts, and resumes sending the feed; test these recovery paths rather than assuming a virtual machine will fix an encoder failure.
- Monitor the instance, encoder process, outgoing connection, and YouTube preview. Decide who responds when the stream stops or degrades.
This operational responsibility is the main distinction from a service that manages looping playback for you. EC2 may suit an operator who needs control over the machine and can maintain the system; the mere availability of a virtual server does not make a 24/7 stream hands-off.
Cost: why the AWS examples are not an EC2-versus-YouTube price comparison
AWS’s undated current Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide gives illustrative costs for a specified architecture in US East (N. Virginia). The estimates depend on audience, resolution, duration, and other assumptions, and AWS says actual costs may be lower or higher.

| Illustrative AWS deployment case | Estimated cost for the stated event | Important scope |
|---|---|---|
| 540p, about 1,000 viewers, one hour | Approximately $69.74 | About $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of distribution; documented AWS solution, not EC2 alone. |
| 1080p, about 10,000 viewers, one hour | Approximately $1,505.60 | Documented AWS solution under its stated assumptions, not EC2 alone. |
These examples should not be treated as universal prices or compared directly with YouTube charges. A meaningful estimate for a self-managed EC2 loop would require the machine and storage choices, runtime, media bitrate, outbound traffic, region, and the rest of the architecture. The cited figures are not a like-for-like comparison with YouTube or a standalone EC2 quote.

- Use YouTube’s encoder workflow when you have a live or software-generated feed to send and want YouTube to host the live destination. You still need an encoder as the source.
- Consider self-managed EC2 if you specifically need to control a cloud machine and have the skills and time to configure, monitor, and recover its playback and encoding workflow. It is not a one-click YouTube loop.
- For managed 24/7 prerecorded playback to YouTube, try StreamNeo first. It keeps uploaded video looping in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not offer the live workflow yet: check verification and live-stream restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation to become available.
- No incoming preview: confirm the encoder is running, the server URL and stream key match the selected YouTube stream, and the outgoing connection is working. Replace an exposed or invalid key in Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream disconnects repeatedly: check the encoder logs and network stability, then verify output settings against YouTube’s current codec and bitrate guidance. A restart policy helps only if the playback and encoder processes are configured to resume correctly.
- The stream stops after a video ends: configure repeat or playlist behavior in the playback software. YouTube’s cited setup pages do not establish an automatic prerecorded-file loop.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not infer from it that longer sessions are automatically archived the same way.
- Quality or playback is unstable: compare the configured bitrate and resolution with the current YouTube recommendations and ensure the encoder’s output and connection can sustain them.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
A technically valid stream key and stable feed do not establish that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights to every video and audio track and review YouTube’s current copyright and channel policies. Repeating prerecorded material does not by itself establish monetization eligibility; assess the channel and content against YouTube’s applicable rules rather than assuming a 24/7 format qualifies.
