How to Fix OBS Dropped Frames on a 24/7 YouTube Music Radio Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First check which OBS counter is rising. Network dropped frames point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; rendering lag and encoding overload point to OBS struggling to produce frames on your computer. They have different fixes, so identify the symptom before changing settings.

Identify the problem in OBS before changing anything

While streaming, open View → Stats in OBS and watch which indicator changes. Also note the stream status and any stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Record the time and the displayed bitrate so you can tell whether a change helped.

  • Dropped frames (network): frames are not reaching YouTube’s ingest server reliably. This does not, by itself, show that your encoder or computer is at fault.
  • Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS cannot get frames from the GPU to the encoder quickly enough. Reduce system and scene workload.
  • Encoding overload or choppy output: the computer is struggling to encode the stream. Lower the workload or output demands rather than treating it as a network fault.

Viewer buffering alone does not prove OBS is dropping network frames; playback can fail somewhere along an individual viewer’s route. Use OBS’s counters and YouTube’s stream-health information to narrow down the cause.

Fix network dropped frames in this order

1. Record a baseline

Before changing settings, note the dropped-frame percentage, configured bitrate, time of the problem, relevant OBS log details and YouTube Live Control Room health messages. A speed test is only a snapshot: it does not establish that the path to YouTube’s ingest server will remain stable throughout a long stream.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Lower the video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity

In OBS, go to Settings → Output, select the streaming output settings and lower the video bitrate. Choose a rate that fits the upload speed you can sustain—not just a brief peak—and leave capacity for other devices and normal variation. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed; treat this as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. If upload speed varies or other devices are active, use more headroom.

Check the bitrate against YouTube’s guidance for your codec, resolution and frame rate as well. The right setting depends on your actual upload route and output format; there is no universal bitrate that will fix every stream.

3. Test for local network interference

  • Temporarily test with a VPN disabled. If that changes the result, investigate the VPN route rather than leaving it disabled by default.
  • Check whether firewall or antivirus software, or a network optimization or traffic-prioritization tool, is interfering with OBS. If security software is implicated, restore protection and use an appropriate OBS application exception rather than leaving protection off.
  • Check for network-driver updates from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

4. Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi

OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be unstable. Test with Ethernet if practical. Restarting the modem or router can be reasonable when the symptoms suggest a local connectivity problem, but replacing a modem, router, cable, network card, switch or extender should follow evidence of a fault. A cable cannot fix congestion or routing problems outside your home.

5. Check whether the problem is specific to the route or service

OBS recommends testing a different stream server or service as a diagnostic step. For a YouTube stream, try a different ingest option only if your current OBS and YouTube setup exposes one; do not assume a Twitch-specific server selector applies. If local checks do not resolve persistent drops, contact your ISP with the times, logs and symptoms. Congestion or routing outside your home may require the ISP’s help.

6. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

OBS’s beta dynamic-bitrate option can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may limit drops, but OBS warns that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and picture quality can fall as bitrate changes. Treat it as a fallback, not a substitute for stable upload capacity.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 and AV1, and output up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Use settings supported by the encoder and ingest configuration you have selected.

The table gives examples of YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates. These are platform recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain them; YouTube’s guidance gives separate ranges by codec, resolution and frame rate.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate How to use it
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps Use only if the stable route has enough upload headroom.
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps Compare with sustained upload capacity and competing household traffic.
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps Do not choose this rate solely because it is a published recommendation; confirm the connection can carry it reliably.

For a mostly static radio visual, a high frame rate may not be necessary, but resolution and frame rate are production choices rather than universal fixes. Balance the visual result against the upload route’s reliability.

If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload

When the network dropped-frame counter is not the problem, changing the network alone is unlikely to address the symptom. Reduce the amount of work OBS and the computer must do:

  • Lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, OBS suggests trying 30 fps.
  • Simplify scenes and sources, and reduce demanding filters or browser sources.
  • Free GPU capacity by closing or reducing other GPU-heavy workloads.

Make one change at a time and check the relevant OBS counter again. This separates a rendering or encoding improvement from a network change.

Test before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended

  1. Apply one change and write down what you changed and when.
  2. Test with the actual radio audio and visual scene, not just an empty or unusually simple test scene.
  3. Watch OBS Stats and YouTube Live Control Room stream health during the test. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
  4. If the same indicator still rises, keep the baseline and new logs, then move to the next diagnostic step that matches that symptom.

No bitrate, cable or OBS setting can be said to guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream without knowing the particular computer, ISP, route, logs and YouTube health diagnostics.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the aim is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube radio stream running without leaving OBS and a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
